You generally do not add a YouTube stream key to Owncast. Owncast’s documented setup uses an Owncast key to send video into your Owncast server; YouTube’s key belongs in an encoder configured to send video to YouTube. Keep the keys separate, and treat the YouTube key like a password.
Which stream key goes where?
In a typical setup, an encoder such as OBS sends a stream to one destination. Owncast receives a stream at its RTMP endpoint and uses an Owncast stream key. YouTube receives a stream at its own endpoint and uses a YouTube stream key. They are separate credentials for separate destinations.

Owncast’s documented Stream Keys settings manage the keys broadcaster software uses to send video to Owncast; the key is separate from the Owncast admin password. Its official setup does not document entering a YouTube key in Owncast to forward an incoming broadcast to YouTube. Do not put a YouTube key in Owncast’s Stream Keys field expecting it to work. Owncast’s stream-key documentation and its OBS/Streamlabs Desktop guide describe the incoming-stream configuration.

Send an encoder stream to Owncast
- Make sure Owncast is running and reachable. You need access to the server’s RTMP address and the port configured for that instance.
- Get an Owncast key. In the Owncast admin, open Configuration > Server Setup > Stream Keys. Create or select a key for the broadcaster software. Owncast supports multiple keys, which can be assigned and revoked separately.
- Configure OBS. Open Settings > Stream, choose Custom as the service, and enter the Owncast RTMP address as the server URL. A typical form is
rtmp://<your-server>:1935/live; use the actual address and port for your server. Enter the Owncast key in the stream-key field. - Start the stream and check Owncast. Confirm that the stream appears in your Owncast instance. This is the documented configuration pattern, not a claim that a particular server has been independently tested.
Send an encoder stream to YouTube
- Get YouTube’s destination details. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room for the scheduled or current stream and obtain its stream URL and YouTube stream key.
- Enter them in the encoder’s YouTube destination settings. Use YouTube’s preset if the encoder offers one; otherwise enter the YouTube URL and key in the corresponding fields.
- Choose RTMPS when supported. Use the RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room if your encoder supports it. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP carried over TLS/SSL, which encrypts the connection in transit.
- Keep the YouTube key private. If you suspect it has been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room under the Stream tab, then replace the old key in your encoder. A channel owner or manager must reset a compromised key. See YouTube’s instructions for managing live stream settings, creating a live stream with an encoder, and encrypting a stream using RTMPS.
How to avoid exposing either key
- Do not show a live key in screenshots or public material. YouTube describes its stream key as password-like; do not paste it into public posts, chats, issue trackers, or tutorial images.
- Keep credentials out of public URLs and shared files. Enter the key in the encoder’s credential field. Avoid putting it in shell history, source-controlled configuration, or logs. These are general secret-handling precautions, not special Owncast controls.
- Use RTMPS for transport when available. Encryption protects the connection in transit; it does not protect a key visible in an encoder screen, log, screenshot, or compromised computer.
- Rotate the correct credential. Reset a potentially exposed YouTube key in YouTube Studio and update the encoder. If the exposed credential is an Owncast key, revoke or rotate that key separately in Owncast.
What if you need Owncast and YouTube live at the same time?
The documented configurations establish how to send a stream to Owncast and how to send one to YouTube separately. They do not establish a supported, secure workflow for Owncast to relay its incoming stream to YouTube, or verify a particular encoder’s simultaneous multi-destination setup. Before entering both credentials into an encoder or relay, check its current documentation for explicit multi-destination support, where each key is stored, who can view it, and whether each destination can use RTMPS. Also consider the required upload bandwidth, server or computer load, and whether revoking one destination’s key would interrupt the other.

Do not assume that adding a YouTube key under Owncast’s Stream Keys settings enables forwarding. Those settings are for broadcaster software sending video into Owncast.
