To change a YouTube live stream’s title or description, edit its details in YouTube Studio—not in Owncast. Owncast’s /admin settings control your Owncast site and server; they do not change the metadata on a YouTube video.
Change the details for an encoder or mobile stream
For a stream sent to YouTube from an encoder or mobile device, use YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. YouTube’s instructions for this workflow say you can set the metadata when creating the stream or edit it from the stream settings or scheduled stream.

- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room.
- Select the stream, or open the scheduled stream. If you are already viewing its stream settings, use that page.
- Select Edit.
- Update the title and description in the stream details, then save your changes.
The exact available controls can depend on the stream’s status and setup. YouTube’s encoder/mobile stream settings guidance is separate from its webcam instructions.

Change details for a webcam stream
YouTube’s webcam workflow also uses the Live Control Room, but its instructions are separate from the encoder/mobile workflow.

- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room.
- Open the webcam stream and select Edit.
- Change the title or description and save.
YouTube’s webcam guidance says stream settings can be changed whether the stream is live or not. If the labels or layout differ in your account, look for the stream’s edit or details controls in Live Control Room.
Edit a past live stream or replay
For a completed broadcast, find its video in YouTube Studio and edit the video details. YouTube’s help guidance places live, upcoming, and replay items under the Live tab.

- In YouTube Studio, open Content, then select the Live tab.
- Find the relevant live stream or replay and open its details.
- Edit the title or description fields that are available, then select Save.
The edit controls can vary with the item and its status. A replay is a YouTube video, so edit its available video details rather than changing Owncast’s site settings.

If you meant the Owncast site name or About text
Owncast has its own administration interface at /admin on your server. Sign in with the admin password and open General settings to edit the Owncast site name or page content, such as its About text. Those edits affect the Owncast site, not a YouTube stream’s title or description.

Why the Owncast stream key is not the YouTube title
Owncast’s documented broadcast setup has streaming software publish video to the Owncast server through its /live endpoint using an Owncast stream key. For example, its OBS guidance uses a custom service with the Owncast URL and key. A stream key is a publishing credential; it is not a title or description field.
YouTube’s metadata controls live separately in YouTube Studio or Live Control Room. The documented Owncast admin settings and YouTube editing steps are distinct; the reviewed documentation does not establish an automatic metadata sync between them. Do not assume that changing the Owncast site name, About text, or key changes YouTube’s video details.

Common problems and fixes
- You changed the Owncast About text, but YouTube still shows the old title. Those are different settings. Make the metadata change in YouTube Studio or Live Control Room.
- You are looking for a YouTube title field in Owncast. The reviewed Owncast configuration documentation describes Owncast site and server settings, not a YouTube metadata control. Use YouTube Studio for the video details.
- You changed the stream key, but the title did not change. A key is used to publish a broadcast; it is not the metadata editor. Edit the title or description in YouTube Studio.
- You cannot find an Edit option for an old broadcast. Open the item under Content > Live and inspect its details. Available controls depend on the item; the documented guidance does not promise that every field is editable for every video.
- The instructions do not match your stream type. YouTube documents encoder/mobile streams and webcam streams in separate workflows. Follow the path for how the stream was created.
