To put your webcam over gameplay, a presentation, or another video on YouTube Live, create a scene in OBS Studio: add the camera as a Video Capture Source, resize and position it, and place it above the other source in the Sources list. Connect OBS to YouTube through the encoder workflow, check the Live Control Room preview, then start the broadcast. YouTube’s direct webcam route is simpler, but OBS gives you control over a layered picture-in-picture scene.
Choose the right YouTube streaming route
| Route | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| OBS or another encoder | Composed scenes with a movable webcam overlay, gameplay, screen content, external audio, or additional video hardware. | Requires configuring sources and connecting the encoder to YouTube. |
| YouTube webcam | A straightforward camera broadcast from a computer with a webcam; YouTube’s webcam workflow also supports screen sharing. | It is a simpler broadcast route, rather than the scene-layering workflow documented for OBS. |
YouTube describes encoders as a way to stream gameplay and overlays and use hardware such as cameras and microphones. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips, encoder setup instructions, and webcam setup instructions.

Set up a webcam overlay in OBS
1. Enable YouTube Live ahead of time
Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and make sure live streaming is enabled for your channel. YouTube says first-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours, so complete this step well before a scheduled broadcast. Follow YouTube’s encoder instructions.
2. Create or choose an OBS scene
Open OBS Studio and select an existing scene or create one for the content you plan to show, such as a game, a window, or a presentation. A scene is a layout built from sources. If you need a walkthrough of the initial setup, see the OBS Quick Start Guide.

- The adjustable universal clip lets you attach the camera securely to your screen or laptop, or fold the clip and set the webcam on a shelf. You’re always ready for your next video call.
3. Add the webcam as a source
- In OBS’s Sources dock, choose the option to add a source and select Video Capture Source.
- Select the webcam in the source’s properties. If you already have a usable built-in or external camera, you do not need to buy another one.
OBS documents this camera source and its settings in How do I add my webcam?
4. Size, place, and layer the overlay
Select the webcam in the OBS preview and resize it, then drag it to a corner or another position that does not obscure important game or presentation details. In the Sources list, a source higher in the list appears in front of sources below it. If the camera is hidden, move its source above the gameplay or screen source. OBS explains source ordering and positioning in its Sources Guide.

5. Connect OBS to YouTube
In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, set up the stream and connect OBS using the YouTube option if it is available in your encoder. Otherwise, copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube into OBS’s stream settings. Treat the stream key like a password: keep it private and do not show it on stream. YouTube’s encoder instructions cover the connection process.
6. Preview and test before the event
Start the encoder and wait for the incoming stream to appear in the Live Control Room preview. Check that the intended camera is selected, the framing is correct, the overlay is visible, and it is not covering essential content. OBS recommends testing your settings for a few minutes before your first livestream or recording; YouTube also advises checking the preview before going live. See the OBS Quick Start Guide and YouTube encoder guidance.

7. Start and monitor the stream
When the preview looks right, use the Live Control Room to start the broadcast. Monitor the video and audio as the stream runs.

YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom beyond your stream’s total bitrate. This is YouTube’s recommendation, not a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming. If the stream is unstable, compare your available upload bandwidth with the combined bitrate of the stream and leave room for variation. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.

Troubleshoot common webcam-overlay problems
- The webcam is hidden behind the game or screen: In the Sources list, move the webcam source above the source it should cover.
- The wrong camera or a blank image appears: Open the Video Capture Source properties and check that the correct device is selected.
- The overlay blocks important details: Resize it in the preview and move it to a less obstructive corner or edge.
- The stream is unstable: Check available upload bandwidth against the total stream bitrate and aim to leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
- You cannot start your first stream yet: If live streaming has not been enabled on the channel, YouTube says initial enablement may take up to 24 hours. Set up ahead of the broadcast.
Or let it run in the cloud
OBS is the route for a live camera overlay. If your goal instead is to keep an uploaded video looping as a YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a live camera feed.
