For a custom website, put a muted, looping <video> inside the homepage hero and use CSS to fill and crop it behind the headline and call to action. In WordPress, you can start with the Video block and configure its playback settings. In either case, keep a poster image and make sure the page still works when autoplay is blocked or the video has not loaded.

If you need precise layering and responsive cropping, native markup offers direct control. If you want to work in the editor, try the Video block first; the theme or page builder may already include a video-background option.

Add a video background with HTML and CSS
1. Put the video and the hero content in one container
Place the video element inside the hero, before the text and call to action. Use a poster image so the hero has a visual fallback while video data is unavailable. Multiple source elements let the browser choose a supported format.

2. Size the video to the hero
Make the hero a positioned container, then absolutely position the video so it fills that container. object-fit: cover fills the space while cropping any excess; the exact crop depends on the clip and the hero’s dimensions.

}The example sets a minimum height rather than a fixed height, so the hero can grow when its text needs more room. Adjust the sizing and crop to suit your actual layout, and check that the text remains readable over the moving image. An overlay or a different poster and clip may be needed for contrast.

3. Understand the playback attributes
autoplayasks the browser to start playback automatically; it does not guarantee that playback will begin.mutedstarts the video without sound. Muted playback is more likely to be eligible for autoplay than audible playback.looprepeats the clip when it reaches the end.playsinlinerequests playback inside the element’s playback area rather than automatically taking over the screen on supported devices.posterprovides an image to show while video data is unavailable or playback does not start.
Browser policy and user settings vary, so test the real page rather than assuming autoplay will work everywhere. Keep the poster meaningful and the hero content usable without motion.
Set it up in the WordPress block editor
- Open the page in the WordPress block editor and add a Video block.
- Choose Upload, Media Library, or Insert from URL, depending on where your clip is stored.
- Use the block settings to configure the available playback options, including autoplay, loop, muted, inline playback, controls, preload, and a poster image.
- For a background treatment, check whether your theme or page builder has a video-background control. If it does not, use the block’s additional CSS class or CSS settings to position the video behind the hero content.
- Preview the published layout and test it with autoplay unavailable. Confirm that the poster and regular page text still communicate the page’s purpose.
Uploading a large video directly to the site can slow a page. Also, do not rely on a low preload setting to prevent a download when autoplay is enabled: the HTML video reference notes that autoplay takes precedence over preload hints.

Keep the video from slowing or weakening the page
Reduce unnecessary loading
- Use a short, compressed clip rather than a long source video.
- If the video will always be muted, remove an unused audio track; it still adds data to the file.
- A video set to autoplay can begin downloading immediately, even when it is outside the initial viewport. For a visible homepage hero, weigh a fast visual start against page loading and Largest Contentful Paint.
- Avoid loading several large background videos on one page.
- For video that is not immediately visible, consider deferring its download until it approaches the viewport. An Intersection Observer can be used for this; test the result so the clip does not appear late when it becomes visible.
A site’s media library or an existing video URL can be sufficient for a basic implementation. If your files or traffic make delivery a concern, look into video hosting or CDN delivery rather than treating a special service as a requirement for every site.
Preserve a useful fallback
Keep the poster as a static visual fallback for slow connections, blocked autoplay, or layouts where video is disabled. Make sure the hero still has its headline and action when the moving background is absent.

Make the background accessible
A background clip should be decorative, not the only place where important information appears. Keep the headline, offer, and essential details as real page text. If the video communicates information, provide that information in accessible text and make playback controllable; meaningful video may also need captions. A loop runs indefinitely, so provide an appropriate way to control playback when the moving content is more than decoration.
