How to Update the Playlist in a Running 24/7 YouTube Stream

Update a running OBS playlist in the VLC Video source, then verify the result in OBS and YouTube. In-place edits are not guaranteed to be seamless.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For an OBS stream, edit the playlist in the OBS VLC Video source—not a playlist on YouTube’s watch page. OBS documents playlist and loop settings, but does not guarantee that edits made while streaming will load without resetting playback. Check the preview and the YouTube live output after every change, and use a tested fallback if an interruption would be costly.

First, identify which playlist you mean

A YouTube playlist on a watch page organizes videos for viewers to play. It does not add local files to the signal your encoder is sending to a live broadcast. If OBS is generating the broadcast from files on your computer, the playlist is part of an OBS source.

OBS’s Media Sources documentation describes the VLC Video source as able to hold a playlist. A single-file Media Source instead has a Loop property for replaying that file. The steps below concern a multi-file VLC Video source in OBS.

Update an OBS VLC Video playlist

  1. Check the source and dependencies. In OBS, find the scene that supplies the live video and identify its VLC Video source. If VLC Video is not available when adding a source, install VLC. OBS says 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. The documentation lists Media Source and VLC Video source support for Windows, macOS, and Linux; check the labels in your installed version because interface details can change.
  2. Open the source properties. In the relevant scene, select the VLC Video source and open its Properties. Confirm that you have the source feeding the live program, especially if several scenes contain similar sources.
  3. Edit the media list. Add or remove files and arrange their order in the playlist controls. Check whether Shuffle Playlist is enabled: with shuffle on, the sequence will not follow the visible order in the same way.
  4. Check looping. Confirm that Loop Playlist is enabled if you want the list to repeat after its final item. OBS documents Loop Playlist as On by default and Shuffle Playlist as Off by default, but verify your actual settings rather than relying on defaults.
  5. Apply the change cautiously. Watch the OBS preview and confirm which item is playing. Then check the actual YouTube live output. OBS’s documentation does not describe a guaranteed hot-reload procedure for an active playlist, so an edit may not appear immediately or may reset playback.
  6. Confirm the broadcast remains live. If playback restarts, check YouTube Live Control Room before assuming the broadcast ended. A source or playback reset and the status of the YouTube broadcast are separate things.

Will editing the playlist interrupt the live stream?

There is no universal guarantee that an in-place edit will be seamless. OBS’s official guide describes playlist properties but does not promise that changing a playlist during a stream will load without restarting or resetting the current item. Reports in the OBS forum conflict: one user said resaving a playlist at the same location appeared to work, while another described needing to restart OBS and YouTube. A separate forum discussion reports playback resetting to the first video after a change. These are individual experiences, not confirmed behavior for every OBS version or setup.

When preserving the current item matters, prepare an alternate scene or source, preview it, and switch only when you are satisfied with what it will show. Treat this as a cautious workflow, not a guarantee of uninterrupted switching. Test it on your setup before relying on it during an important stream.

Visibility settings can affect playback

A source’s visibility behavior controls what happens when its scene item is hidden; it does not control whether the YouTube broadcast ends. OBS documents these VLC Video options:

Playlist looping is not the same as a 24/7 broadcast

Loop Playlist controls what the VLC source does after it reaches the end of its items. It does not keep OBS running, repair a failed internet connection, maintain an encoder connection, or guarantee that YouTube’s broadcast remains healthy. Those are separate parts of the streaming setup.

YouTube’s Live Streaming API documentation models a live broadcast separately from an incoming live stream. It describes maintaining a 24/7 broadcast while activating a distinct broadcast using the same stream. That distinction helps explain why a source reset does not, by itself, establish that the broadcast ended; check its status in Live Control Room.

Common problems and what to check

What you see What to check Practical response
The new item does not appear on YouTube. Confirm the playlist was edited in the VLC Video source feeding the active scene, not only in a YouTube watch-page playlist. Check the OBS preview. Verify the changed output in the YouTube live feed. Since hot-reloading is not guaranteed, use a tested source or scene change if needed.
Playback jumps to the first video. Check whether the source reset or its visibility behavior stopped and restarted playback. Review Visibility Behaviour and test any scene transition before using it live. User reports show resets can happen, but do not establish one universal cause.
The list repeats, but not in the expected order. Check Shuffle Playlist and Loop Playlist. Turn shuffle off for sequential playback and confirm looping is enabled if the playlist should repeat.
VLC Video is missing from the source list. Check whether VLC is installed and whether its architecture matches OBS; OBS’s documentation specifically calls for 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS. Install the compatible VLC version, then check the source list again.
OBS playback changed, but the broadcast status is unclear. Check the stream preview and YouTube Live Control Room. Do not infer broadcast status from a source restart alone; YouTube treats the broadcast and incoming stream as separate resources.

Or let it run in the cloud

Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the uploaded video in the cloud, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
