To replace the scenery behind a person, first remove that background with a keying or background-removal tool, then put the color layer underneath the isolated subject. These are different edits: changing the canvas does not remove anything recorded in the scene.
Choose the right method for the result you want

Which option is available depends on the editor, device, and version. The workflows below reflect the cited product documentation; labels may differ in mobile apps or later releases.

Fill the empty canvas around a clip
CapCut desktop
- Import the video and place it on the timeline.
- Resize the clip to suit the project’s aspect ratio. If you want to show the whole clip, avoid enlarging it so far that important edges are cropped.
- Select Video > Canvas > Color, then choose the background color. CapCut also lists Blur and Pattern as canvas options. The color fills the surrounding canvas; it does not cut a person out of the original scene. See CapCut’s canvas instructions.
Canva
- Select the page or design background.
- Choose Background color from the floating toolbar.
- Select a solid-color tile. Canva also offers gradient tiles.
This changes the page/design background, not the background behind a person already visible in the video. Canva notes that adding or changing backgrounds is not available in Canva Docs. See Canva’s background instructions.
Add a color layer in Adobe Premiere Pro
A color matte is a solid-color clip. It can serve as a background, overlay, or transition; to make it a background, place it beneath the footage in the timeline.

- In the Project panel, select New Item > Color Matte.
- In the dialog, match the matte’s width, height, timebase, and pixel aspect ratio to the sequence.
- Choose the color in the Color Picker, name the matte, and confirm.
- Drag the matte to a video track below the footage that should appear in front of it. Extend it for the duration you need.
If you see only the matte, check track order: the footage should be on the higher video track. Adobe’s Color Matte instructions were last updated August 18, 2026.
Replace the scenery behind a person
A color background layer will show through only where the original image has been made transparent. If the footage was not shot against a keyable background, use an editor’s background-removal feature if available; results depend on the footage and the tool. For green- or blue-screen footage, use chroma keying.

Adobe Premiere Pro: Ultra Key
- Put the replacement color matte on a lower video track and the green- or blue-screen footage above it.
- Apply Ultra Key to the foreground clip.
- Use the effect’s eyedropper to sample the backdrop color.
- Refine the result with Matte Generation and Matte Cleanup, then adjust Spill Suppression to reduce color cast around the subject.
Adobe recommends an evenly lit green or blue backdrop and avoiding clothing close to the backdrop color. Uneven lighting, shadows, or matching clothing can make the subject harder to separate cleanly. See Adobe’s Ultra Key instructions, last updated January 7, 2026.

iMovie on Mac: Green/Blue Screen
- Place a solid-color background clip in the timeline.
- Place the green- or blue-screen clip above it as an overlay and select the Green/Blue Screen effect.
- Adjust the effect controls if needed. The removed color is based on the dominant color in the frame at the playhead when the effect is selected.

When you need a physical green screen
A green or blue backdrop is useful when recording footage specifically for chroma keying. It is not needed to fill an empty canvas or create a color matte. For keying, choose a backdrop color that contrasts with the subject and clothing, and light it as evenly as practical; those choices help the editor distinguish the backdrop from the person.
Common problems and fixes
- The color does not appear around the clip: confirm the project canvas is larger or differently shaped than the video, then resize or reposition the clip so the exposed area is visible.
- The color covers the footage in Premiere: move the color matte to a lower video track than the foreground clip.
- The person has colored edges or holes: sample the intended screen color again and refine Matte Generation, Matte Cleanup, and Spill Suppression. Uneven lighting and clothing close to the key color can contribute to poor separation.
- The whole background remains visible: a canvas color or matte alone does not remove the recorded scene. Apply background removal or chroma key to isolate the subject first.
- The menu or label is missing: verify the editor and device. The cited Canva, CapCut, Premiere, and iMovie instructions do not establish that the same controls exist in every platform or version.
