An active FFmpeg process does not necessarily mean YouTube is receiving a valid feed—or that a scheduled event has been started. First check whether the intended stream has an incoming preview in YouTube Live Control Room. If it does, click Go live for a scheduled event; if it does not, check the destination URL and key, YouTube’s error messages, the output format and protocol, then your outbound connection.
What “offline” can mean
There are several separate stages between FFmpeg sending packets and viewers seeing a live event: FFmpeg must send to the correct YouTube ingest endpoint, YouTube must accept the feed, Live Control Room must show its preview, and a scheduled event must be started. A process that is running—or logging that it is sending data—does not confirm all of those stages.

- No preview: investigate whether YouTube is receiving the feed. Start with the endpoint and stream key, then check the reported error, format, protocol and network.
- Preview present, event still scheduled or offline: use Go live in Live Control Room. For a scheduled encoder stream, YouTube’s documented sequence is to start the encoder, wait for the preview, then click Go live (YouTube’s encoder setup instructions).
Do not keep clicking Go live to fix a missing preview: that action starts the scheduled event, but does not correct an ingest problem.
Diagnose it in this order
-
Check the intended event and preview
Open the stream you mean to broadcast in Live Control Room. Confirm whether its preview shows incoming video. If it does, and the event is scheduled but not live, click Go live and check the event state again. If there is no preview, continue through the ingest checks below.

Match the stream URL and key
Compare FFmpeg’s output destination with the Stream URL shown for that exact stream in Live Control Room. Confirm the key belongs to the same stream and has not been reset since it was copied. YouTube describes the stream key as the credential that tells the encoder where to send the feed and lets YouTube accept it; if you reset the key, update FFmpeg with the new one (manage live stream settings).
Keep the key private. Do not paste it into public logs, screenshots or help requests. If you share a command for troubleshooting, redact the key.

Read the current health message
Check the health indicator and error text in Live Control Room or the Live Dashboard. YouTube’s error messages have timestamps, so make sure a warning refers to the current FFmpeg run rather than an earlier attempt. Messages can be marked critical or moderate; use the specific error to choose the next check (YouTube live streaming error messages).

See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy. For an Incorrect stream format error, YouTube identifies H.264 video and AAC audio as the correct RTMP format. Inspect FFmpeg’s actual output streams and codecs; a source file’s extension alone does not establish what FFmpeg is sending.

Verify RTMP or RTMPS
Use the protocol and endpoint supplied for the selected stream. If the setup calls for RTMPS, the URL must use the
rtmpsprotocol and the encoder must support RTMPS. YouTube notes that Live Control Room may show an ordinary RTMP URL by default even when an RTMPS URL is wanted. Its SSL troubleshooting guidance mentions port 443 as an option to try when the endpoint is otherwise correct; changing ports is not a universal fix for an offline display (YouTube’s RTMPS guidance). -
Check how FFmpeg is pacing the input
For a video file,
-rereads input at its native frame rate (equivalent to-readrate 1). FFmpeg gives this generic file-to-RTMP example:Rank #4

ffmpeg -re -i myfile -f flv rtmp://myserver/live/mystreamThis is not a guaranteed YouTube command: replace the example destination with the URL and key structure provided for your stream, and use output settings compatible with the selected protocol.
-recontrols file pacing; it does not check the destination, authenticate the key or start a scheduled event. FFmpeg warns against applying a low read rate to a real capture device or live input because it can cause packet loss (FFmpeg documentation).Recommended Free Tools

Test outbound bandwidth and stability
If the destination, format and protocol look right, check the connection from the sending machine to the internet. YouTube says total stream bitrate must fit available upload bandwidth and recommends 20% bitrate headroom. Its bandwidth calculation includes both primary and backup stream bitrates, plus that headroom. A disrupted connection can break the stream, so assess outbound capacity and connection stability—not just download speed (YouTube streaming tips; troubleshoot a YouTube live stream).
Common symptoms and what to check
| What you see | Likely next check |
|---|---|
| FFmpeg is running, but there is no preview | Compare the current Stream URL and key with the intended event; then read Live Control Room’s current error. |
| A preview appears, but the scheduled event is not live | Click Go live in Live Control Room. |
| YouTube reports an incorrect stream format | Inspect the outgoing codecs; YouTube’s RTMP guidance specifies H.264 video and AAC audio. |
| An SSL or RTMPS error appears | Confirm the endpoint uses the required protocol and that the encoder supports RTMPS. If the endpoint is correct, consult YouTube’s SSL guidance about port 443. |
| The feed appears unstable despite a correct setup | Check upload capacity against total stream bitrate, retain YouTube’s recommended headroom and inspect connection stability. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep pre-recorded video looping on YouTube, StreamNeo can run it without leaving FFmpeg or a computer on at home: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It streams uploaded videos to YouTube, not from a camera. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers; it also includes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
