What a Rust server password actually protects
There are two different passwords commonly called a “Rust server password,” and confusing them can lock you out of administration while leaving the game open to anyone.

As of October 14, 2026, Facepunch’s published server references did not document a built-in player join-password switch. An older Facepunch forum discussion said a real password would require a new client interface, but that dated, unattributed comment is not a current compatibility guarantee. In practice, current guides use uMod (also known as Oxide) plus a password plugin, so the plugin must remain compatible with the current Rust server build and uMod release.
Before you begin
- Have administrator or control-panel access to the server files and console.
- Make sure your host supports installing uMod. A one-click installer may offer uMod as an installation choice.
- Keep a separate, strong RCON password. Do not reuse the player password.
- Plan a private way to distribute the join password. Anyone who has it can attempt to enter while the plugin is active.
- Check the Password plugin’s current page for a release that supports your Rust and uMod versions. One commonly cited guide is about five years old; another was updated in June 2026, so age and compatibility matter.
Install uMod on the server
The exact labels differ between hosting panels, but the documented installation sequence is consistent: select uMod, use the default merge method, start once so the framework creates its directories, then stop the server before installing the plugin.

- Open the server installer. In your host’s game-server panel, choose the installation or mod-framework option and select uMod (sometimes labelled Oxide).
- Leave the installation method at “Merge” unless your host’s current uMod instructions explicitly require another method. The merge option is intended to add the framework files without replacing the rest of the server installation.
- Start the server and wait for a complete load. Do not upload the plugin while the initial framework setup is still running. Watch the panel console until normal startup messages appear.
- Stop the server cleanly. This first run should create an
oxidedirectory, including apluginssubdirectory. If those directories do not appear, uMod did not install or finish loading; resolve that before continuing.
A server that starts without an oxide directory will not load an Oxide plugin, and the server.password command will not be available just because the file exists on disk.
Install the Password plugin
The Password plugin is distributed as a C# source file with a .cs extension. Use the current file from the plugin’s official uMod listing rather than an old copy bundled in a random guide.

- Open the server’s
oxide/pluginsfolder. This is the folder created by uMod during the first startup. - Upload the plugin’s
.csfile unchanged. Do not place it in the base server folder or in the generated configuration folder. - Start or restart the server. uMod compiles and loads plugins during startup. The panel console should show whether the Password plugin loaded or reported a compiler or dependency error.
- Allow the plugin to generate its configuration. After a successful load, uMod creates the plugin’s JSON configuration in its configuration area. Stop the server before editing files manually so the running process cannot overwrite your changes.
Third-party instructions describe the plugin as starting with a default password that is weak. The exact default value is not established in the available documentation, so treat it as unknown: change it before inviting anyone, and never publish the generated value in a public chat or server listing.
Set the player password
There are two documented ways to change the value. Use one method at a time and verify the result with a test account or a trusted player.
Method 1: Edit the plugin JSON configuration
- Stop the server. This prevents the plugin from rewriting the file while you edit it.
- Open the Password plugin’s generated JSON file in the uMod configuration area. The filename is created by the plugin; use the exact name shown by your panel rather than guessing a path.
- Locate the password property. Preserve the existing JSON punctuation and change only the value. Keep the password inside quotation marks if the property is a string.
- Save the file and start the server. The plugin reads the configuration during startup.
- Test from outside the administrator session. A player should receive a password prompt before they can move or interact. Enter the new value and confirm that an incorrect value is rejected.
If the server refuses to start after an edit, restore the last known-good copy and inspect the console for a JSON syntax error. A missing quotation mark, comma, or closing brace can prevent the plugin from loading.

Method 2: Set it with the plugin command

Issue the command through RCON or from the in-game console while authenticated as an administrator. For example, a password of Harbor-Maple-27! would be entered as:
server.password Harbor-Maple-27!The command is plugin-dependent; it is not evidence of a native Rust server setting. If the console reports an unknown command, first confirm that uMod loaded and that the Password plugin is active. Check the server startup log rather than repeatedly sending the command.
Some plugin versions write command changes back to their JSON configuration, while others may require a restart to make the setting persistent. After issuing the command, restart during a maintenance window and test again so you know the value survives a reboot.
What players should see
Players connect to the server in the normal way, using the server address and port. The official console-command reference lists the connection form as:

connect <server-ip>:<port>That command has no documented password argument in the referenced snippet. With the Password plugin loaded, the password challenge appears after connection and before the player can move or interact. Give players the password through a private channel, then ask one person to test both cases:
- An incorrect password must not grant access to the playable server.
- The correct password must let the player proceed normally.
- A reconnect must trigger the expected challenge again rather than silently bypassing it.
If a player can move without seeing a prompt, do not assume the password is merely wrong. Treat it as a plugin-loading or compatibility problem and inspect the server console.
Do not confuse the join password with RCON
The Rust Wiki’s server-creation documentation lists +rcon.password as a launch parameter. That value protects RCON administration; it does not create the player prompt described above.
Keep the credentials separate:
- Use a long, unique RCON password and share it only with administrators or the RCON tool that needs it.
- Use a different player password that can be rotated when a community member leaves.
- Never paste the RCON credential into a public server description or give it to ordinary players.
- If you change RCON authentication, update your management tool at the same time or you may lose remote console access.
A player who knows the join password should still have no administrative authority unless you separately grant it through Rust’s admin system.

The oxide folder was never created
uMod probably was not selected, did not finish merging, or was installed for a different server instance. Re-run the host’s uMod installation, start the server once, wait for a complete load, and stop it cleanly. Do not continue until the oxide/plugins directory exists.

The plugin file is present but no password prompt appears
- Read the startup log for a compile error, missing dependency, or version warning.
- Confirm the file is in
oxide/plugins, not merely in the top-level server directory. - Verify that the plugin release supports the installed Rust and uMod versions.
- Restart after correcting the file. A copied plugin is not active until uMod loads it.
server.password returns “unknown command”
This command is supplied by the Password plugin, not by the base server. Check that uMod loaded, that the plugin compiled, and that you are entering the command in an administrator-authorized console or RCON session. If the plugin is incompatible, install a current compatible release or use its documented JSON configuration method instead.
The server stops after editing JSON
Restore the previous configuration and compare the edited line with the plugin’s original formatting. JSON is unforgiving: invalid quotes, commas, braces, or an unescaped character in the password can make the file unreadable. Make one change at a time, restart, and keep a backup of the working file.
Players can connect but are trapped at the prompt
Confirm that everyone received the current password, including capitalization and punctuation. If the value was changed with the command, restart once and test again to determine whether that plugin version persists command changes. Do not distribute the old default value.

Password management and safe operation
Choose a password that is practical to share
A long passphrase with several unrelated words and a number or symbol is easier to communicate than a short, complex string while still resisting guessing. Avoid the server name, wipe date, map name, administrator name, or any value already visible in your community channels.
Rotate it deliberately
Change the player password when it is posted publicly, when an event ends, or when a former member should no longer enter. Tell players the effective time and test the new value before announcing it. Keep RCON credentials unchanged unless you specifically need to rotate administrative access.
Back up before updates
Save a copy of the working plugin configuration and note the Rust and uMod versions. Rust updates can change plugin compatibility, and a previously working third-party plugin may need a new release. Recheck the plugin listing after every major server update rather than assuming an old file remains safe.
Removing the password
To return the server to open access, use the Password plugin’s documented disable or clear procedure for the installed version. Do not simply delete a random line from the JSON file: an invalid configuration can stop the plugin from loading. If you remove the plugin file, restart the server and verify from a non-administrator account that the join prompt is gone. Keep the RCON password in place; disabling player authentication should not weaken administrator authentication.
What is and is not guaranteed
This method depends on third-party software. Facepunch’s official references located for this topic document RCON authentication and connection syntax, but they do not confirm a native player join-password control. The older forum discussion about a missing client UI is therefore useful historical context, not a promise that every current Rust build behaves the same way.
Plugin behavior, configuration keys, persistence, and compatibility can change. The safest workflow is to read the current plugin release notes, install it on a test instance first, verify the prompt with a non-admin account, and keep a rollback copy before applying it to a live community server.
