Have operator-level access to the server, either through the dedicated-server console or an in-game account with permission to administer worlds. You also need access to the server files if you intend to edit configuration or upload an existing world.
- Operator access: ordinary players cannot create or remove worlds.
- A unique world name: use the same spelling and capitalization everywhere. The name becomes the folder name under
universe/worlds. - A maintenance window for file changes: stop the server before editing JSON or replacing a world folder, then start it again.
- A backup: copy the relevant world folder before changing configuration or using a destructive command.
World creation through a command is different from importing a world you already have. The first method generates a new world; the second places an existing folder in the server’s world directory and loads it.

Create a generated world with the /world command
- Open the dedicated-server console, or join the server with an operator account.
- Run
/world add <worldName>, replacing<worldName>with the name you want. For example,/world add Survival2. - Wait for the server to report that the world was created and activated before attempting to teleport or change its settings.
In an in-game chat window, include the leading slash. Some hosting consoles accept commands without it, so the console form may be world add Survival2. If your server reports an unknown command, do not repeatedly retry alternate spellings while players are online; run help and inspect the available world commands for that build.
Choose a generator when supported
Some server builds expose an optional generator argument:
/world add <name> --gen=<generator>
The generator names reported by current hosting documentation are:

Generator flags are version-sensitive. If --gen is not accepted, create the world with the basic command and use the generator names shown by your server’s help output.

Make the new world the default spawn world
Creating a world does not necessarily change where first-time players spawn. To select it as the default, run:
/world setdefault <worldName>
For the example above, that is /world setdefault Survival2. This changes the destination for new players. Players who have already joined generally continue to spawn in the world they last visited, so changing the default is not a reliable way to move an established player base.

Use the exact world name returned by the creation command. A spelling mismatch can point the command at a different name or produce an error, depending on the server version.
Configure an individual world
Every world’s settings belong in:
universe/worlds/<worldName>/config.json
For Survival2, the path is universe/worlds/Survival2/config.json. A minimal per-world file needs at least a DisplayName value. Existing files may contain additional settings for fall damage, player-versus-player combat, time progression, environment, and ticking or simulation behavior.

Safe editing procedure
- Stop the Hytale server cleanly. Do not edit a live world’s JSON while the process is writing saves.
- Back up the complete world folder, including its current
config.json. - Open the file in a text editor that preserves UTF-8 text and JSON punctuation.
- Change only the property you intend to change. Preserve commas, quotation marks, braces, and any keys already present.
- Save the file, start the server, and watch the startup output for JSON or world-loading errors.
- Join the world and verify the behavior you changed before making further edits.
Do not assume that a key from another Hytale release is valid in yours. If the server refuses to load the world after an edit, stop it, restore the backup, and check the configuration reference or the server’s error output for the accepted key names.
Understand the root config.json default
The server’s root config.json has a Defaults block containing a World key. That key names the default world. If the named folder does not exist in the server’s universe directory, the server creates it during launch.

This setting is separate from the /world setdefault command, but both concern the default world. If you edit the root file manually, stop the server first, change the Defaults.World value to the intended folder name, and restart. Keep the spelling identical to the directory under universe/worlds.
Panel-hosted server precedence
On a server managed through a hosting panel, panel Settings can override values from the root config.json at startup. If a manual edit appears to be ignored or reverts after a restart, inspect the panel’s world or startup settings before changing the file again. Make the setting in the layer that has precedence, then restart and verify the resulting configuration.

Load an existing or uploaded world
To import a world folder rather than generate a new one:
- Stop the server.
- Place the complete world folder in
universe/worlds. - Check that the folder name is exactly the name you intend to load.
- Start the server and allow it to scan the world directory, or run
/world load <worldName>when the server is running and your build supports that subcommand. - Check the console for a successful load before allowing players to enter.
The folder name is significant. If the uploaded folder’s name does not match the name requested in the load command or configuration, the server can create a new empty world instead of opening the uploaded one. Check for differences in capitalization, spaces, and trailing characters.
Do not merge files from two worlds into one directory. Keep the uploaded folder intact unless the world documentation for your exact server version explicitly requires a different layout.

Some guides describe alternatives such as world create <name> [type] or separate /addworld and /removeworld commands. Those forms may belong to a different server build, wrapper, or release. The authoritative list for your installation is the output of help in its own console.
Troubleshoot common failures
“Unknown command” or an invalid subcommand
- Run
helpand locate the world-management section. - Try the console form without the leading slash if you entered the command in a panel console.
- Check that you are using an operator account when issuing the command in-game.
- Use the exact subcommand names exposed by the running build rather than copying a command from a guide for another release.
The command runs but no world appears
- Read the console immediately after running the command for a generation or permission error.
- Check whether the world folder appeared under
universe/worlds. - Confirm that the server has permission to create and write files in the
universedirectory. - Restart only after recording the error; a restart can make the original failure harder to diagnose.
The uploaded world opens as an empty world
- Stop the server and compare the requested name with the uploaded folder name character by character.
- Make sure the folder is directly inside
universe/worlds, not nested one level deeper. - Use
/world load <worldName>after correcting the name, or restart the server. - Restore the original folder from backup if the server has already generated files in the wrong location.
Configuration changes do not stick
- Confirm the file you edited belongs to the intended world, not the root server configuration.
- Stop the server before editing and restart afterward.
- On a panel-hosted server, check whether panel Settings overwrite the root
config.jsonat startup. - Validate JSON punctuation and restore the backup if the server reports a parsing error.
Players still spawn in the old world
/world setdefault affects new players. Returning players may continue to appear in the world they last visited, so test with a new account or a player who has not previously joined rather than concluding that the command failed.
Changing or removing worlds safely
Before using /world remove, verify the name and archive the world folder outside the server directory. Removing a world is not a substitute for resetting its settings; if you only need different rules, edit that world’s config.json while the server is stopped.
Use /world prune --confirm only when you intentionally want to remove every loaded world that currently has no online players. Because the command can affect multiple worlds at once, announce maintenance, confirm that no protected world is empty but needed later, and keep an independent backup.
Version and syntax checklist
World management documentation is not uniform: some current guides use /world add, while others show world create, generator type arguments, or separate add/remove commands. Command names and configuration keys can change as Hytale’s dedicated server evolves. Before applying a guide to a production server:
- Run
helpand record the exact world subcommands your server exposes. - Test creation, loading, and configuration on a disposable server or backed-up world.
- Use the folder paths shown by your installation rather than assuming another host’s directory layout.
- Stop the server for file edits and restart it before judging whether a change worked.
- Keep the world name consistent in commands, folder names,
Defaults.World, and any panel setting.
Following those checks gives you a repeatable process: create the world with the syntax your build accepts, set the default only when necessary, edit the per-world file offline, and treat uploaded or removed worlds as filesystem operations that require backups.
