What an ETS2 or ATS GSLT token does
A GSLT associates your dedicated server with your Steam account and the selected game. For ETS2 and ATS, the token is read from the server configuration rather than from a Source-engine-style launch parameter. Its practical benefit is a stable Session Search ID across server restarts, so the server can remain consistently identifiable in session listings instead of receiving a new identity after every restart.
The token is a credential tied to your Steam account. Anyone who obtains it may be able to use it as that account’s game-server credential, so treat it like a password: copy it only into the server or provider panel that needs it, do not publish it in screenshots or chat, and do not commit it to a public repository.

Check the game and server details first
Use the game app ID, not the dedicated-server tool ID

Steam’s token form asks which game the server represents. Enter the game’s app ID in the middle column. The dedicated-server tool IDs identify downloadable server software, not the game identity required for the login token. Entering the tool ID can produce a token for the wrong application and leave the server unable to authenticate as expected.
Prepare access and a maintenance window
- Sign in to the Steam account that should own the server token.
- Have access to the server’s files or its hosting control panel.
- Plan to stop the server before changing
server_config.sii. Editing a live file can be overwritten when the process exits or can leave the running instance using the old value. - Keep the generated token in a temporary private location while you transfer it. Delete that temporary copy after the server is configured.
Generate the Steam Game Server Login Token
- Open Steam’s Game Server Account Management page and sign in.
- In the app-ID field, enter 227300 for an ETS2 server or 270880 for an ATS server.
- Submit the form to generate the game-server account token.
- Copy the resulting token exactly. Do not add quotation marks, spaces, line breaks, or explanatory text to the token itself.
- Store it privately until you paste it into the server configuration or provider panel.
The token is generated for the app ID you selected. If you run both games, create the appropriate token for each game rather than reusing an ETS2 token for ATS or vice versa.

Method 1: Add the token to server_config.sii
Manual editing works on a self-hosted installation and on any host that provides file access. The exact directory containing server_config.sii varies with the operating system, installation method, user account, container, and provider. Use your server manager’s documented data directory or its file manager; do not assume that a desktop game’s profile directory is the dedicated server’s configuration directory.

- Stop the ETS2 or ATS server cleanly from the service manager, console, or hosting panel.
- Open the directory that contains the active
server_config.sii. - Make a backup copy of the file before editing it. A copy with a date in its filename makes it easy to restore the previous configuration.
- Open the file in a plain-text editor. Avoid word processors, which can add formatting characters.
- Find the existing token setting:
server_logon_token: "" - Place the token between the existing quotation marks, leaving the setting name and SII syntax intact:
server_logon_token: "YOUR_GSLT_TOKEN_HERE" - Save the file as plain text, preserving the
.siiextension and the original encoding if your editor offers an encoding choice. - Start the server again and watch the startup output for authentication or configuration errors.
Editing rules that prevent avoidable failures
- Replace only the value between the quotes. Do not remove
server_logon_token:, the colon, or the quotation marks. - Paste the token as one uninterrupted string. A wrapped display line is acceptable in an editor, but an actual newline inside the value is not.
- Do not add a second
server_logon_tokenline. Keep one authoritative setting in the active file. - Do not edit a sample, backup, or inactive configuration file. Confirm that the server process starts with the file you changed.
- If the server fails to start after the edit, stop it, restore the backup, and then re-enter the value carefully.
Method 2: Enter the token in a hosting panel
Managed game-server hosts commonly expose a text field for the same credential. The label depends on the provider and panel version. Typical labels include Steam Auth token under Server Options or a separate Server Login Token tab.
- Stop the server from the panel, if the panel requires a stopped state for configuration changes.
- Open the server’s options, startup settings, or login-token page.
- Paste the GSLT into the field labelled for the Steam authentication or server login token. Do not paste it into a general Steam account-password field or a command-line field intended for another game engine.
- Save or apply the setting.
- Restart the server and check the panel’s console or status page for a successful startup.
A panel normally writes the value to the provider’s managed configuration, so you do not need to locate server_config.sii yourself. If both a panel field and a file are available, use the panel as the authoritative setting unless the provider’s documentation says otherwise; changing only the file may be overwritten by the panel on the next restart.

Confirm that the token is being used
After restarting, verify the server through the normal server status and session-listing workflow you use for ETS2 or ATS. The important result is that the server starts normally and retains its Session Search ID after a controlled restart. Record the ID before stopping the server, restart it, and compare the value afterward. A stable value indicates that the token is being applied to the running instance.

Do not treat a successful file save as proof that the server consumed the token. A common mistake is editing a non-active copy of server_config.sii or saving a panel field without applying the change. The running server and its post-restart identity are the useful checks.
Troubleshooting token and startup problems
The server starts, but the identity changes after every restart
Check that the token is in the configuration actually loaded by the server. Confirm that server_logon_token contains the complete value, that the server was stopped before editing, and that the panel did not overwrite the file on startup. If you run multiple instances, verify that each instance points to its own intended configuration.
The server will not start after editing the file
Restore the backup you made before editing. Then compare the line with the required form:

server_logon_token: "TOKEN_VALUE"Look for a missing quote, an accidental newline, a second copy of the setting, or characters introduced by a rich-text editor. Start the server with the restored file first; once it runs, make one controlled change and test again.

The token is rejected or authentication does not succeed
- Confirm that the token was generated on Steam’s game-server account page while using the correct app ID.
- For ETS2, regenerate or verify against app ID 227300; for ATS, use 270880.
- Ensure you did not use 1948160 or 2239530, which are dedicated-server tool IDs.
- Copy the token again without surrounding spaces, quotation marks added outside the configuration syntax, or line breaks.
- Check that the token belongs to the Steam account intended to operate the server and has not been replaced since you copied it.
The panel has no obvious token field
Look under server options, Steam settings, startup parameters, or an authentication tab. Providers can use different labels, including Steam Auth token and Server Login Token. If the panel exposes neither a token field nor file access, its support documentation or support team must identify where the provider stores the ETS2/ATS server_logon_token value. Do not substitute a Source-engine launch command merely because the panel offers one.
You found instructions for steam_game_server.cfg or sv_setsteamaccount
Those instructions do not describe the ETS2/ATS configuration method in this guide. ETS2 and ATS use server_config.sii and the server_logon_token setting. The sv_setsteamaccount launch-line approach is associated with Source and Source 2 game servers, and a steam_game_server.cfg step does not apply here.
Managing more than one server
Plan a separate token for each server instance. Keep a private inventory that identifies which token belongs to which game and server, but do not record the full token in a shared ticket, public document, or chat channel. When copying configuration between instances, remove the old instance’s token and insert the token intended for the new server.
For a fleet that includes both games, label entries by game and app ID so that an ATS token cannot accidentally be assigned to an ETS2 configuration. The app ID is the decisive distinction when generating the token; the dedicated-server download ID is not a substitute.
Security and replacement practices
Keep the credential private
The GSLT is tied to your Steam account. Limit access to the machine, container, panel, backups, and logs that contain it. Redact the value before sharing diagnostic output. Check automated backups and configuration exports as well as the live file, because a token can remain exposed in an old archive even after you change the active setting.
If the token is exposed
Assume an exposed token is compromised. Return to Steam’s Game Server Account Management page and use the account’s available management controls to invalidate or replace it if that option is provided. Then update the server or panel with the replacement and restart it. Remove the leaked copy from the location where it was posted and from any publicly accessible logs or repositories.
When changing ownership or administrators
Because the token is associated with the Steam account that created it, decide who should control that account before handing a server to another administrator. Transfer access through an agreed account-management process rather than emailing an unprotected token. After a change in control, replacing the credential is the cleanest way to ensure the previous administrator no longer has a usable copy.
