What a GSLT does in CS2
A Game Server Login Token identifies a dedicated Counter-Strike 2 server to Steam’s game-server services. A server can start without an obvious token error yet still fail to appear in the Community Server browser when the token is missing, malformed, no longer valid, or not actually being loaded by the process.

For CS2, the required application ID is 730; the game and its dedicated server use that same ID.
Steam displays the token as a long hexadecimal value. Community guides commonly describe it as a 32-character string. Treat the value as a credential, not as a server name or public identifier: anyone who obtains it may be able to use it in a server configuration.

What you need before creating the token
- A Steam account to associate with the server.
- Access to Steam’s game server account management page.
- The CS2 application ID,
730. - Access to the machine or hosting panel that starts your dedicated server.
- Permission to edit the server’s launch command, startup script, or
server.cfg.
Community guides also mention possible account conditions such as a linked phone number, Steam Guard, an unrestricted Steam account, and ownership of CS2. Those requirements are not confirmed here against an official Steam eligibility list, so if the management page refuses to create a token, read the exact message shown by Steam rather than assuming that one of these conditions is definitely required.
Create a CS2 GSLT on Steam
- Sign in to the intended Steam account. Use the account you want associated with this server. Do not create the token while signed in to an account you do not control or one that you will later lose access to.
- Open the management page. Go to steamcommunity.com/dev/managegameservers in a browser and complete Steam’s sign-in prompt if necessary.
- Enter App ID 730. The application-ID field identifies the game service for the token. Enter
730, not a depot ID, a workshop ID, or an ID copied from another game. - Add a memo. Use a label that tells you which machine or server the token belongs to, such as
community-eu-01. A memo helps you distinguish tokens later; it is not the value that the server uses to authenticate. - Select Create. Steam generates the GSLT. Copy it immediately and keep the characters intact. Guides commonly describe the result as a 32-character hexadecimal string, so avoid adding spaces, quotation marks inside the token, or line breaks.
- Store it temporarily in a protected place. Move it into the server’s protected startup configuration as soon as possible, then remove loose copies from chat, screenshots, shell history, and shared notes.
Creating a token does not configure the server by itself. The dedicated-server process must receive the value through +sv_setsteamaccount at startup or through sv_setsteamaccount in server.cfg.
Method 1: pass the token in the launch command
The launch method puts the setting directly in the command that starts the dedicated server. The Valve Developer Community documentation describes the syntax as +sv_setsteamaccount <TOKEN>. Replace the placeholder with the token you created; do not type the angle brackets.
Linux startup example
./cs2.sh -dedicated +sv_setsteamaccount "YOUR_GSLT_TOKEN"Replace YOUR_GSLT_TOKEN with the complete value. The quotation marks keep the token together as one argument if the shell or a wrapper script handles command-line parsing. Keep the + before sv_setsteamaccount when the setting is supplied as a launch parameter.

Windows startup example
. cs2.exe -dedicated +sv_setsteamaccount TOKEN +map de_dust2Use the executable and map options appropriate to your installation. The important part for authentication is +sv_setsteamaccount TOKEN. If you copy the example into a script, make sure the token is not truncated and that a second command-line option has not been appended to it accidentally.
When the launch method is useful
- It is easy to test: change the startup command, restart the process, and observe the new startup output.
- It keeps the token beside the other server parameters, which can be convenient when one script manages a single instance.
- It exposes the token in the process command line. On a shared host, administrators should assume that users or monitoring tools able to inspect processes may see it.
After editing a startup script, stop the old server process completely before starting it again. Running an old process while testing a new command can make it appear that the change had no effect.
Method 2: put the token in server.cfg
You can place the setting in the server’s server.cfg, in the configuration directory loaded by your CS2 server. The configuration form does not use the leading plus sign:
sv_setsteamaccount "YOUR_GSLT_TOKEN"In a config file, write sv_setsteamaccount, not +sv_setsteamaccount. Keep the quotation marks around the token as shown, and replace the placeholder with the real value.

Order and loading behavior
A community forum report says the position of this setting in the configuration chain can matter and recommends placing it early. That is community advice rather than a confirmed Valve requirement. If the token is correct but the server behaves as if it is absent, move the line near the beginning of the configuration that is loaded at startup, then restart and inspect the console again.
Make sure you are editing the file that this particular instance actually loads. Hosts often maintain separate configuration directories for separate servers, maps, or containers. A perfectly written line in an unused file has the same effect as no line at all.
When the server.cfg method is useful
- The setting survives restarts without editing a shell script or service definition.
- It keeps most server variables in one configuration file.
- The token remains in plain text on disk, so file permissions and host access still matter.

Do not configure two different tokens for the same instance while troubleshooting. Use one method, restart the server, and verify the result. Once it works, remove any duplicate line so a later configuration file cannot silently override your intended value.
Verify that CS2 actually loaded the GSLT
- Stop and restart the dedicated server. A token added after the process started is not a substitute for a clean restart.
- Read the startup console and logs. Look for messages indicating that the server accepted the account token or reporting a GSLT error. Record the exact wording; “token missing,” “invalid,” and a general network failure point to different follow-up checks.
- Confirm the configuration source. If you used a launch option, inspect the service or script that really starts the process. If you used
server.cfg, confirm that the file belongs to this server instance and is loaded in its startup sequence. - Check the Community Server browser. Allow time for the server to register, then search by its configured name or address. A browser absence is a symptom, not proof of one particular cause.
- Test after every single change. Change the token, file location, or ordering one at a time so the next log result tells you which change mattered.
Never paste the complete token into a public issue, screenshot, or log-sharing site. Redact the value while preserving the surrounding error text and timestamps.

If the server is missing from the Community Server list
A missing listing is the most common reason administrators revisit their GSLT configuration. Follow this order so you check the highest-value causes first.
1. Check that the token is still valid
Return to the Steam game-server account page and compare the token associated with the server’s memo to the value in the startup command or configuration. A single missing character is enough to make the value unusable. If you copied the token through a formatted document, re-enter it from a protected source rather than trusting a visually wrapped line.
2. Check that the running process is using the token
It is possible to create a correct token and never pass it to the active process. Confirm the command used by the service, container, panel, or scheduled task that launched CS2. If the token is in server.cfg, verify that the instance reads that exact file and that the line appears early enough in the loaded configuration chain for the server to process it.
3. Read the console for GSLT errors
Console and log output can distinguish a bad credential from a configuration mistake. Search the startup output for GSLT-related errors, but do not publish the token alongside those lines. If the output says the token is invalid, return to the management page and create or copy the value again. If there is no GSLT-related output at all, investigate whether the launch argument or configuration file was loaded.
4. Restart after correcting the setting
Stop the old process, apply one correction, and start a fresh process. Checking the browser while an old process is still running can lead to a false conclusion about the new configuration.
5. Recheck the listing
After the restart, search the Community Server browser again. If it remains absent, preserve the timestamps and sanitized logs for the next diagnostic step. Do not repeatedly generate tokens without first determining whether the running server is using the one you already created.

Community guides commonly advise creating a fresh token for each server. Treat that as an operational rule when managing multiple instances: give every server its own clearly labeled token so one server’s changes do not disrupt another. The one-token-per-server behavior is community-reported and is not confirmed here by a primary Valve document.
One guide claims that a token can expire after roughly five weeks of inactivity. That is a single, unverified claim, not a guaranteed Steam policy. Do not schedule maintenance around that number. Instead, monitor the server’s logs and the management page, and investigate any sudden registration failure as a possible validity problem.
If a token is exposed, handle it like a password or API key. Remove it from screenshots, chat messages, repositories, and shared tickets; restrict access to the configuration file; and create a replacement through Steam’s management page before updating the server. Because the available documentation does not establish a universal revocation workflow, follow the controls and status shown for the token on that page.
Common configuration mistakes
- Wrong application ID: CS2 uses
730. A token created for another application will not identify this server correctly. - Using the plus sign in server.cfg: The launch form uses
+sv_setsteamaccount; the config form usessv_setsteamaccountwithout the plus. - Leaving the placeholder in place:
YOUR_GSLT_TOKENis explanatory text, not a usable credential. - Truncating the value: Copy all characters of the generated hexadecimal string, with no spaces or line breaks.
- Editing the wrong instance: A host may run several CS2 servers, each with its own script and configuration directory.
- Changing a file without restarting: Startup authentication settings require a new server process to be tested reliably.
- Publishing the secret: The token should never be committed to source control or included in a public support request.
- Assuming browser absence has one cause: Check validity, actual usage, and console errors before changing unrelated networking settings.
A repeatable setup checklist
- Sign in to the Steam account that will own the server token.
- Open the Steam game-server account management page.
- Enter App ID
730and add a descriptive memo. - Create and copy the generated token without altering its characters.
- Choose exactly one configuration method.
- For launch configuration, add
+sv_setsteamaccount "TOKEN"to the real startup command. - For file configuration, add
sv_setsteamaccount "TOKEN"to the loadedserver.cfg. - Protect the script or file with appropriate host permissions.
- Restart the dedicated server completely.
- Read the startup logs for GSLT errors.
- Check the Community Server browser and, if necessary, repeat the validity and loading checks above.
The essential distinction is simple: create the token under App ID 730, then ensure the active CS2 process receives that exact value through +sv_setsteamaccount or sv_setsteamaccount. When a server does not appear, validate the token and the configuration path before assuming the browser itself is at fault.
