What you need before editing
Adding a Workshop map is an INI-configuration task, but the three identifiers must match exactly. Prepare the live Workshop page for the map, a text editor, and access to the dedicated server’s settings. Do not edit a running server: a restart can overwrite unsaved changes, and players may connect while the configuration is only partly applied.

- Back up the server INI. Copy the current file before changing it so you can restore a known-good configuration.
- Identify the game build. Build 41 and Build 42 guides do not always use identical conventions. The map author’s instructions for your build take precedence.
- Keep a copy of the map’s Workshop page. You need the numeric Workshop ID, the Mod ID, the map folder name, and any dependencies listed by the author.
Find the three values on the Workshop page
Workshop ID
The Workshop ID is the numeric Steam item ID in the map’s Workshop address or description. Put this number in WorkshopItems=. It tells the dedicated server’s SteamCMD integration which Workshop item to download.
Mod ID
The Mod ID is a short identifier used by the game to activate the downloaded content. It is not necessarily the same as the map’s display name and is not the numeric Workshop ID. Copy the spelling, punctuation, and capitalization exactly. A map can require more than one Mod ID—for example, a separate tileset, bridge package, or parent map. Add every required ID listed by the author.

Map folder name
The map folder name is the directory name used by the map’s world files. This is the value for Map=, not the Workshop title. Folder names are case-sensitive. A map may expose several folders, such as a main area plus north, south, or west extensions; include all of the folders the author says are required.
Do not substitute the Workshop ID for the folder name, and do not assume the display title is a valid folder name. If the Workshop description lists an installation block, copy its values rather than retyping them.
Locate the server INI file
For a self-managed installation, server settings are commonly stored in Zomboid/Server/<servername>.ini. Typical locations are C:Users<You>ZomboidServer on Windows and ~/Zomboid/Server/ on macOS or Linux. These paths are common rather than universal: a control-panel host may expose the file through a configuration editor or store it in a provider-specific directory.

Open the INI belonging to the server instance you actually run. If several server names exist, check the launch command or panel profile before editing. Editing a different INI produces no change even when the syntax is correct.
Edit WorkshopItems, Mods, and Map
Use the existing key names exactly. Map= is singular even when it contains several folders.

Mods=ExampleMap;ExampleMapTiles
Map=ExampleMap;Muldraugh, KYThe comma in Muldraugh, KY is part of the vanilla folder name. It is not a separator. In contrast, commas used to separate custom entries in the Mods= list can break loading.
A multi-folder map example
A reported 2021 forum example used the following shape:
Map=BedfordFalls;North;South;West;Muldraugh, KYTreat that line as a formatting example, not a universal recipe. The folder names and required base-map folders depend on the current map release. Verify every name against the map’s current Workshop instructions, then place Muldraugh, KY last.

Maps with dependencies
If the author lists a tile pack, bridge pack, parent map, or other dependency, add its Workshop ID to WorkshopItems= and its Mod ID to Mods= as instructed. Add any required map folders to Map=. Omitting one dependency can leave the map downloaded but unusable.
Keep the relationship aligned: a Workshop ID downloads an item, a Mod ID activates it, and a folder name tells the world loader which map directory to use. Mixing identifiers from different maps is a common reason for a successful download followed by a missing map.
Ordering rules and disputed details
Keep the vanilla map last in Map=
Host documentation states that Muldraugh, KY must remain the last Map= entry so other maps load. A forum report also found that a custom map worked only after all of its required folders were placed before the vanilla entry. Make the final portion of the line exactly ;Muldraugh, KY unless the map author gives a build-specific instruction.
Do not confuse Map= order with Mods= order
Reports differ on whether a custom map must be at the end of the Mods= list. One user reported a failure when a map was not last, while another host instruction focuses on keeping Muldraugh, KY last in Map=. There is no evidence that one universal Mod-list order applies to every map. Follow the map author’s stated order; if none is given, preserve the server’s existing entries and change only what is necessary.
Build 42 backslash guidance is not confirmed
One Build 42 guide reports that each Mod ID needs a leading backslash. That convention has not been confirmed by a second source, so do not add backslashes automatically to every server. If the map author’s Build 42 instructions specify them, test that exact syntax. Otherwise begin with the normal Mod ID spelling, keep a backup of the INI, and use the console output to determine whether the server accepted the entry.

Start the server and verify the load
- Save the INI and close the editor. Check that the file was saved with the server’s original extension and encoding rather than as a second text file.
- Start the server with Steam integration enabled. Do not use the
-nosteamlaunch option when you expect the server to download Workshop items through Steam. - Watch the startup console. Look for messages showing the Workshop item being downloaded or updated, followed by the Mod IDs being loaded.
- Wait for the server to finish initialization before connecting. A map can be absent simply because the Workshop download has not completed yet.
- Connect with a client that has the same map and dependency subscriptions. If the server reports a missing mod, compare the displayed identifier with the INI character for character.
The console is the authoritative first check: it distinguishes a download problem from an activation problem and an activation problem from a wrong folder name. Save the relevant error lines before changing several settings at once.
Do you need to copy map files manually?
Instructions conflict on this point. Some hosting guides tell administrators to copy map folders from a local computer into the server’s mods directory through FTP and, in some cases, to add spawn-region entries. A developer reply in a 2024 Workshop comment said that copying was unnecessary because the map setup is not a file that must be moved. That reply predates Build 42 and has not been independently confirmed for every map.
Use this decision path:
- Follow the map author first. If the current Workshop description explicitly requires a manual copy or a spawn-region edit, perform those steps for the server build you run.
- Try the INI-only method first when no copy is documented. With Steam integration enabled, add the IDs and folder names, restart, and inspect the console.
- Use copying as a fallback when the item downloads but the map still cannot be found. Confirm the exact destination and folder names with the author’s instructions; do not invent a directory layout from another map.
- Recheck after a Build 42 update. A method that worked on Build 41 may not map directly to the newer file structure.
Troubleshoot a map that does not appear
The Workshop item never downloads
- Confirm Steam integration is enabled and
-nosteamis absent. - Check that
WorkshopItems=contains the numeric Workshop ID, not the Mod ID or display name. - Read the startup console for a failed download, authentication message, or an item that was skipped.
- Stop the server before correcting the INI, then restart and allow the download to finish.
The item downloads but the game says the mod is missing
- Compare the
Mods=value with the exact Mod ID on the Workshop page, including capitalization. - Add every required dependency Mod ID, not just the main map’s ID.
- Remove commas used as separators. Keep semicolons between Mod IDs.
- If you are on Build 42, check the map author’s current syntax, including any explicitly documented backslash prefix, rather than relying on an older Build 41 example.
The mod loads but the map is not selectable or does not spawn
- Check the
Map=value against the map folder name, including case. - Include all required map folders and any parent-map folders listed by the author.
- Use semicolons with no spaces between folders. Do not replace the comma inside
Muldraugh, KY. - Make
Muldraugh, KYthe final entry in theMap=line. - If the item downloaded successfully but the folder is still not recognized, follow the author’s manual-copy instructions as the fallback.
Adding the map breaks other maps
- Restore the backed-up INI to confirm that the new map is the cause.
- Reapply the change with every required folder before
Muldraugh, KY. - Check for accidental commas, spaces, or a misspelled folder name.
- Review the map author’s required
Mods=order. Do not assume that moving entries randomly will solve the conflict.
A complete installation checklist
- Server is stopped and the original INI is backed up.
- Workshop ID, Mod ID, folder name, and dependencies were copied from the current map instructions.
- Numeric IDs are in
WorkshopItems=. - All required short IDs are in
Mods=, separated correctly and without comma separators. - All required folders are in the singular
Map=key, separated by semicolons with no spaces. Muldraugh, KYis the lastMap=entry.- Steam integration is enabled;
-nosteamis not being used. - Startup logs show the Workshop download and mod activation.
- The map author’s Build 41 or Build 42 instructions were followed where they differ.
- Any manual-copy or spawn-region requirement was checked against the current map release.
Key points to remember
The server does not infer a map from its Workshop title. The Workshop ID handles downloading, the Mod ID handles activation, and the folder name handles world loading. A correct installation therefore requires all three values, plus every dependency and folder the author lists. Keep the vanilla map last, use semicolons for lists, preserve case, and let the startup console tell you which stage failed.
