Then, with the keyboard open, switch using its language key or swipe left or right on the space bar, depending on your settings. Adding a keyboard language does not change your phone’s system language.
Add and enable a keyboard language
- Open Settings, then go to General management > Samsung Keyboard settings.
- Tap Languages and types > Manage input languages.
- Turn on the switch beside a language that is already downloaded. If the language is not downloaded, tap its download icon; when the download finishes, turn on its switch. Samsung’s US keyboard settings guide describes managing and downloading input languages.
The labels and available languages may differ by device, software version, and region. Samsung Australia’s instructions apply to Australian-variant Galaxy devices, and Samsung Canada notes that tablet screens and settings can vary by country. Use the closest matching labels shown on your device.

If Samsung Keyboard settings is not shown
On some devices, open Settings > Language and input > On-screen keyboard > Samsung Keyboard instead. Samsung lists this as an alternate route to the keyboard settings.

Open an app with a text field, bring up Samsung Keyboard, and use the switching method configured on your device:

- Language key: Tap the language button on the keyboard. It may appear as a globe or a language label.
- Space-bar swipe: Swipe left or right across the space bar to move between enabled languages.
- Both methods: Keep the language key and space-bar swipe available.
Samsung’s US Notes guide lists Language key and space bar swipe, Language key, and Space bar swipe as choices. Samsung Canada also documents switching with the language icon or a space-bar swipe. The setting names and available methods can vary by device and software version.
Keyboard language is separate from phone language
Adding a second keyboard language changes what you can type with the keyboard; it does not change the phone’s system language. Samsung Australia states that adding a secondary language “WILL NOT change the language and input throughout the phone.”

Voice typing is a separate setting. Enabling a keyboard language does not, by itself, establish that the corresponding voice-recognition language has been installed or enabled. Samsung provides separate controls for keyboard languages and voice-input languages in its US keyboard settings guidance.
Using a physical keyboard with DeX
An attached keyboard has separate input-language and layout settings; the on-screen keyboard swipe instructions do not apply to hardware keys. Samsung’s DeX guidance describes this setup:

- Add the input language in Samsung Keyboard settings.
- Go to Settings > General management > Physical keyboard.
- Choose the input language and select a hardware layout.
Depending on the configuration, possible switching shortcuts include Shift+Space, Control+Space, or Left Alt+Shift. These are hardware-keyboard shortcuts, not gestures for the on-screen keyboard.

- Look for the equivalent keyboard-language controls under Language and input if Samsung Keyboard settings is not listed under General management.
- Check that the language is both downloaded and enabled in Manage input languages.
- Use the switching control shown on your keyboard; its icon and available methods may differ across devices, software versions, and regions.
Samsung’s support pages cover different regional variants and devices, so the common settings route is a useful starting point rather than a guarantee that every screen will have identical labels.
