Decide what the store needs to achieve, choose a small set of tactics suited to its audience and resources, and measure whether those tactics move the intended result. Treat the plan as a working document: adjust it when customer behavior, costs, or channel performance changes.
Strategy versus a marketing plan
The strategy sets direction: what the business is trying to achieve, whom it serves, and where it will focus. A marketing plan makes that direction actionable by documenting the audience, message, goals, tactics, channels, measurement, and campaign calendar. Shopify’s digital marketing strategy guide uses an attract, convert, retain, and optimize cycle; its marketing-plan guidance describes activities across attracting attention, nurturing prospects, making sales, and encouraging post-purchase engagement and advocacy. Use these as organizing frameworks rather than a rigid sequence every customer must follow.

1. Set a business outcome before picking channels
Turn a broad ambition such as “grow sales” into a goal that can be evaluated. The right objective depends on the store’s current needs: it might be acquiring first-time customers, improving conversion, increasing repeat purchases, growing qualified subscribers, or supporting a product launch. Shopify’s examples also include promotion sales, abandoned-cart recovery, and year-over-year sales growth; they are possible objectives, not universal targets.

2. Define the customer and the store’s message
Describe what the store offers, why that offer is distinct, and what problem it helps a customer solve. Use customer feedback, store traffic, purchase patterns, and product knowledge when available. Broad demographic labels alone rarely explain why someone would choose one product or store over another.
Connect the message to the audience’s need: what outcome does the customer want, what could prevent a purchase, and what makes this offer relevant? This gives each later choice—content, email, advertising, or another tactic—a clear reason to exist.
3. Map tactics to customer stages
Organize possible work around attracting prospective customers, helping them buy, and encouraging valuable ongoing relationships. Optimization applies across all three: use observed behavior to improve the experience and reallocate effort. The stages help reveal gaps, but they do not require every store to run every tactic.

Attract
Potential tactics include search optimization, useful content, social activity, creator or affiliate collaboration, and paid advertising. Prioritize options that reach people likely to need the product, rather than copying a competitor’s channel mix.
Convert
The store experience is part of marketing. Make product information useful, navigation clear on desktop and mobile, and shipping costs and return information easy to find. Check store performance, trust signals, reviews, and checkout for avoidable obstacles. Baymard Institute reports a 70.22% average documented online-shopping cart-abandonment rate in 2026, calculated from 50 studies. That pooled figure is context for why checkout deserves attention, not a prediction of any individual store’s abandonment rate.
Retain
After a purchase, relevant options may include opt-in email or SMS, customer service, feedback requests, product education, loyalty activity, retargeting, and follow-up offers. Choose communications that fit the customer’s consent, needs, and purchase context; retention is not a reason to send irrelevant messages.

4. Choose channels with explicit criteria
There is no universally best channel for every online store. Shopify advises matching tactics to the store’s products, customers, and brand rather than trying everything. Compare candidates against practical questions:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Does the intended audience use this channel?
- Does it support the current business goal and customer stage?
- What will it cost in money, staff time, and creative effort?
- How long might it take to learn whether it is working?
- Can you measure the outcome that matters?
- How exposed is the activity to platform rules, algorithms, or policy changes?
If several options still look viable, make a simple comparison and run a bounded test with a baseline and a decision rule. Compare like with like: impressions on one channel are not equivalent to purchases on another. Keep the attribution approach consistent during the test and remember that attribution models can assign credit differently.
5. Set a budget and sequence experiments
Set the available budget before committing to paid activity, and include the time and production effort required for organic work. Start with a manageable number of initiatives so the team can execute them well and learn from the results. Add channels when there is an audience rationale, a defined objective, and a credible way to assess contribution—not simply to appear everywhere.

Gartner’s 2026 CMO Spend Survey announcement reports that marketing budgets averaged 7.8% of company revenue in 2026, compared with 7.7% in 2025. The survey covered 401 CMOs and other marketing leaders in North America, the United Kingdom, and Europe; most respondents reported annual company revenue above $1 billion. This enterprise-heavy survey does not establish an appropriate budget for a small or midsize e-commerce store.
Do not treat published channel benchmarks as guarantees or targets for your shop. Results depend on the product, audience, offer, execution, and measurement method; a benchmark without a comparable population and methodology cannot tell you what your campaign should achieve.
6. Choose metrics that match the goal
Use a small dashboard that connects activity to the outcome you set. Depending on the initiative, useful measures can include:
- Qualified sessions for an acquisition effort
- Conversion rate and average order value for store or offer changes
- New versus returning customers for acquisition and retention
- Campaign-attributed conversions for campaign evaluation
- Subscriber growth and repeat-purchase behavior for relationship-building work
Define each measure consistently and note the attribution assumptions. Shopify’s marketing reports documentation describes campaign conversion reports, attribution models, sessions, conversion rate, and average order value, along with conversion tracking options such as conversion tags and the Meta pixel. It also names Google Analytics as an example of an analytics resource. These are available measurement approaches, not mandatory tools for every store.
7. Review performance and revise the plan
Review results at an interval suited to the tactic. A paid campaign that changes quickly may warrant closer monitoring than content or SEO, which typically require a longer observation period. Track milestones while work is active, then look at traffic and product-sales patterns at the planned review point. Use the evidence to adjust the message, audience, offer, channel, or store experience—or to stop an initiative that is not earning further investment.
Keep diversification deliberate. Depending on one platform can expose a store to changes in algorithms, costs, or policies; a mix may include owned communication such as opt-in email alongside paid, organic, social, creator, or affiliate activity. Adding channels without the capacity to serve them or measure them creates complexity, not resilience.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHow should an e-commerce marketing plan evolve?
Keep the plan current when the business goal changes, customer behavior points to a different need, a channel’s economics shift, or platform mechanics alter how work performs. Revisit the audience and message as well as the channel mix: a weak result may reflect an unclear offer or a difficult buying experience, not just the choice of platform.
AI-powered discovery is an evolving area, but survey findings and vendor-reported figures do not establish a general store-level outcome. Treat AI discovery as an option to monitor and evaluate against your audience and goals, not as a proven requirement for every merchant.
