Add the countdown in OBS, not in YouTube Studio: create a countdown webpage and show it as an OBS Browser Source, or play a prepared countdown video during breaks. OBS sends the composed scene to YouTube through its encoder connection. YouTube’s encoder guide describes automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours; it does not establish that one live session can run indefinitely, so plan for continuity or restarts rather than assuming “always-on” means forever.
Choose how the break countdown will appear
OBS does not supply a ready-made countdown widget in the Browser Source or standard Text Source. You must provide the timer content separately. The two practical options are a live countdown webpage or a pre-rendered countdown clip.

These are workflow choices, not tested performance claims. Consider how often lesson lengths change, whether you are comfortable switching scenes, and how clearly the remaining time reads on a phone-sized screen.

Build the countdown in OBS
Option A: show a live countdown webpage
- In OBS, create a scene for your study stream or a separate break scene. Add the lesson visual, such as a still background or other prepared content.
- In the scene’s Sources panel, choose + → Browser and create a Browser Source. OBS Browser Source can load a URL or a local file. Use a countdown page you have prepared; OBS does not generate the timer automatically.
- Place the Browser Source above the study visual in the source list so the timer appears on top. Resize and position it where it remains readable without covering important content. OBS source ordering and positioning control how scene elements are composed.
- For breaks, either switch to a dedicated break scene containing the timer, or show and hide the Browser Source in your existing scene. Decide how the break begins and ends; a Browser Source by itself does not schedule lesson transitions.
Option B: play a prepared countdown clip
- Render or otherwise prepare a countdown video with the break duration and visual style you want.
- In OBS, add it as a Media Source in a break scene, or use a VLC Video source for a playlist of lesson and break clips. VLC must be installed for the VLC Video source to appear.
- If using a VLC playlist, add the files in the intended order and set Loop Playlist if you want that playlist to repeat. Do not treat playlist looping as proof that OBS will automatically manage a complete 24/7 lesson schedule; verify the exact scene and source behavior you configure.
- Test the clip’s duration, audio, legibility and return to lesson content. If you rely on manual scene changes, rehearse the transition before leaving the stream unattended.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create or schedule a stream using YouTube’s encoder workflow.
- In the stream’s settings, copy the YouTube server URL and stream key into OBS’s stream settings. Treat the key like a password: do not include it in a scene, screen share or on-air demonstration.
- Start streaming from OBS. For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s encoder instructions say to wait for the preview in Live Control Room, check the outgoing picture, then click Go live.
- Check that the preview shows the countdown at the intended size and position, and that the transition between lesson and break is correct before relying on the setup.
First-time live streaming may take up to 24 hours to become available, according to YouTube Help’s encoder workflow page (accessed 2026-10-03). Scheduling helps viewers find a broadcast and receive reminders; it does not create the countdown. YouTube distinguishes the broadcast from the stream feeding it, so the scheduled event and OBS’s outgoing configuration are related but separate parts of the setup.

Plan for an “always-on” stream responsibly
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived when ended. That rule is not confirmation that a single stream session can remain live forever. If uninterrupted operation matters, decide how you will monitor, restart or reconnect the encoder and how a new session will be handled; check YouTube’s current guidance before depending on a particular duration or restart workflow.
OBS’s Quick Start guidance recommends testing settings before the first stream. For an unattended study stream, test the full lesson-to-break cycle, the countdown’s readability, the scheduled-stream preview and the return to lesson content. The countdown is part of the encoder’s composed output, so a YouTube schedule alone cannot fix a missing or obscured timer.

Troubleshoot common countdown problems
- The timer does not appear: Check that the Browser Source is enabled and above the study visual in the Sources list. Confirm that its URL or local file is correct and that the page itself displays a countdown.
- The countdown is hidden behind the lesson image: Move the Browser Source above that image in the source stack, then reposition it in the preview.
- The timer is too small or hard to read: Resize the source and simplify its placement against the background. Inspect the YouTube preview at the intended viewing size before going live.
- The break starts or ends at the wrong time: Check the countdown page or prepared clip duration and the transition method. A Browser Source does not schedule breaks; a VLC playlist’s loop setting repeats the playlist but does not establish a full lesson scheduler.
- The scheduled broadcast has no usable preview: Confirm OBS is sending to the correct YouTube server URL and stream key, then wait for the preview before selecting Go live, as YouTube’s encoder workflow directs.
- The stream stops or needs a fresh session: Do not assume one session is indefinite. Check the current YouTube rules and use an explicit monitoring and restart plan.

Keep the study stream’s content suitable for YouTube
A countdown overlay does not grant rights to the lessons, music or other material in the stream. Use content you own or have permission to stream, and review YouTube’s current copyright and live-stream policies before broadcasting. A looping format also does not itself establish that a channel meets YouTube’s monetization requirements; assess the channel and its content under the current YouTube policies rather than relying on the timer or stream format.
