How to Rotate Recorded Lectures by Subject in a 24/7 YouTube Stream

Use separate subject playlists and OBS’s VLC Video source to loop recorded lectures on YouTube Live. Learn the limits of timed switching and how to monitor a 24/7 stream.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To rotate recorded lectures by subject, create a separate playlist for each subject, then play the selected playlist through an encoder such as OBS and send it to YouTube Live. OBS can loop and shuffle a playlist, but the documented controls do not provide automatic time-of-day switching between subject playlists. For a stream that should run continuously without a computer left on at home, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload the recordings, add your YouTube stream key, and go live.

Choose how lectures should rotate

First decide whether the stream should stay on one subject playlist or move among subjects. A subject playlist is a collection of the files you intend to play together; organizing files this way is an operations choice, not a YouTube feature that categorizes videos on your computer.

  • Ordered loop: Keep shuffle off and loop on when students should encounter lessons in a deliberate sequence.
  • Shuffled loop: Turn shuffle on when randomized replay makes sense. Preview the sequence and check that the lessons still make pedagogical sense in any order.
  • Switching subjects by schedule: Prepare a separate playlist for each subject, but do not assume OBS or YouTube will switch between them automatically at set hours. The cited product documentation describes playlist playback and shuffle/loop controls, not a built-in clock-based subject scheduler. A timed-switching tool or method would need separate validation.

Prepare the lecture playlists

  1. Sort and name the files by subject. Create clear groups such as Mathematics, History, or Biology before configuring playback. Keep each group’s files together so you can select the correct playlist for the intended broadcast.
  2. Check every recording. Confirm that each file opens and has usable picture and sound. Remove or repair files that fail playback before putting the playlist on air.
  3. Decide the sequence. Arrange lessons in teaching order if sequence matters. If randomized playback is appropriate, make sure each possible transition is understandable to a student joining at any point.

Set up playlist playback in OBS

OBS Project documents a VLC Video source for playing multiple media files as a playlist. VLC must be installed for that source to be available. The exact interface can vary by OBS version, so use the current OBS Media Sources guide for the controls and labels: OBS Media Sources.

  1. Install VLC, then open OBS and add a VLC Video source to the scene that will feed YouTube.
  2. Add the lecture files for one subject to that source’s playlist. Keep subject groups separate so you can choose the intended set without mixing unrelated lessons.
  3. Enable Loop to repeat the playlist after it reaches the end.
  4. Leave shuffle off for an ordered teaching sequence, or enable it for randomized replay. Test the actual playback before going live.
  5. Check that the source fits the scene and that its audio is audible in OBS. Play through representative points in the playlist, including a transition between files.

Looping repeats the selected list; it does not keep a broadcast online by itself. The computer running OBS, the media files, power, network connection, and operator response to failures remain part of a local setup.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

YouTube describes an encoder as software or hardware that converts and sends the stream. In its words, “An encoder converts your video into a digital format to stream on YouTube.” Follow YouTube’s current encoder setup instructions for the current Studio interface.

  1. Check channel eligibility first. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave enabling the feature until the planned start time. See YouTube’s live streaming tips and the encoder setup guide.
  2. Create or schedule the stream in YouTube Studio. Scheduling creates a page viewers can share and lets them set reminders. Use the scheduled stream’s details in the Live Control Room.
  3. Connect OBS with the stream URL and stream key. Copy the encoder connection details from YouTube Studio into OBS’s streaming configuration. Treat the stream key as a secret: anyone with access to it may be able to send video to your broadcast. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
  4. Send the signal and inspect the preview. Start streaming from OBS, then check the Live Control Room preview before completing YouTube’s go-live step for a scheduled event. Confirm the right subject playlist is playing and that sound and picture are present.

Keep a 24/7 broadcast reliable

A looped playlist and a continuous live service are different things. For a local OBS setup, someone must be responsible for stream health, file availability, power and network continuity, and recovery if the encoder or YouTube connection stops. YouTube recommends checking the preview and continuously monitoring audio and video quality in its live streaming tips.

  • Verify the channel can go live well before launch, allowing for YouTube’s first-time activation window.
  • Check the playlist files, transitions, sound, and picture before leaving the stream unattended.
  • For a scheduled broadcast, connect the encoder and start sending before the event, then follow the Live Control Room’s go-live step.
  • Plan recordings and archives separately. YouTube’s cited encoder guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; it does not establish that a single stream longer than 12 hours will be archived as one complete video. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo keeps uploaded videos looping on a YouTube channel from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. Upload your lecture recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free day.

A lecture will not play or has no sound

Check that the file opens outside OBS, then confirm it is included in the selected playlist and that the source is active in the scene. Inspect OBS audio meters and the Live Control Room preview; replace or repair any file that remains silent or fails playback.

The wrong subject or an unexpected lesson is on air

Check which playlist is loaded and whether shuffle is enabled. Use separate, clearly named subject lists; turn shuffle off when lesson order matters, then preview playback before going live.

The stream does not appear in YouTube

Confirm OBS is using the correct YouTube stream URL and key, and check that OBS is sending. Verify the channel’s live eligibility and inspect the Live Control Room. If the stream key was exposed, replace it in Studio and update OBS.

The stream stops when nobody is watching the computer

A local encoder depends on the computer, power, network, and recovery attention. Check those dependencies and assign someone to monitor the stream; alternatively, use a cloud service designed to keep uploaded videos streaming without a home computer.
