What’s actually slowing this PC down?

To add a countdown before a show and an intermission screen between shows, create separate scenes in OBS Studio, add prepared video clips to them, and switch scenes while OBS keeps sending the stream to YouTube. You do not need to stop the encoder feed for each change.
What you need
- OBS Studio running on a computer with a reliable internet connection.
- A YouTube Live Control Room stream configured for an encoder, with its stream URL and stream key.
- Local video files for the countdown and intermission. A static graphic can also work as a scene background, but a video can include motion, a timer, or music you have permission to use.
YouTube describes an encoder as software or hardware that converts video into a format it can stream. Its documented workflow is to send the feed from the encoder, wait for the preview in Live Control Room, and select Go live. First-time live streaming enablement may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube Help; check the current help page if you are preparing a first broadcast. Prepare your YouTube stream
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule an encoder-based stream.
- Set the title, visibility, and other stream details. Scheduling creates a watch page viewers can find in advance; it does not schedule OBS scene changes.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the stream. Treat the key like a password: it authorizes an encoder to send video to your YouTube stream. If it is exposed, reset it in Studio and replace the old key in OBS.
YouTube also provides reusable custom stream keys and auto-start/auto-stop settings. They can simplify repeat broadcasts, but check the controls on the specific stream and test the workflow: scheduling or reusing a key does not create a countdown or intermission schedule. - In OBS, create three scenes and give them clear names: Countdown, Program, and Intermission.
- Open Countdown, add a Media Source, and select your locally prepared countdown video. In that source’s properties, enable Loop if it should repeat. Enable Restart playback when source becomes active if each return to the scene should begin the clip from its start.
- Repeat the process in Intermission with a break graphic or video. Enable Loop for a clip that should play continuously, and use the restart option if it should start over each time you switch to it.
- Add the content for your Program scene, such as a capture or media source, according to what you are broadcasting.
- Arrange each scene’s sources in the Sources list. Sources higher in the list appear over sources below them, so place a logo, schedule, or text overlay above the background video.
For a straightforward countdown or repeating break clip, a local Media Source avoids relying on a web page staying available. If you need multiple clips in sequence, OBS’s VLC Video source supports playlists and playlist looping; it requires VLC to be installed, with the architecture matching OBS (for example, 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS). Choose transitions and test the scene changes
OBS includes Fade and Cut transitions. Select the transition and duration that fit your stream, then switch between Countdown, Program, and Intermission while monitoring the Program output. The live audience sees the encoder output, not just the scene editor preview. OBS: Scene Transitions
Connect OBS and go live
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Select YouTube if the service is available in the list, or enter the server URL and stream key copied from YouTube Studio.
- Apply the settings, then select Start Streaming in OBS. Check Live Control Room for the incoming preview.
- For a scheduled stream, follow YouTube’s prompt to select Go live after the preview appears. If auto-start is enabled, confirm how that particular setup behaves instead of assuming a manual or automatic start.
- While OBS remains connected, switch scenes in OBS: Countdown to Program, then Program to Intermission, and back as needed. Scene changes alter the video being sent; they do not end the YouTube broadcast.
For recurring shows, choose deliberately between one continuous watch page and separate event pages. Google documents reusing stream settings and also describes a pattern in which a 24/7 feed coexists with a separate broadcast; the right structure depends on how you want viewers to find each program. Make the countdown and break screens useful
- Put the start time or next-program information where it is readable on a phone as well as a desktop display.
- Keep essential text away from the edges, where player controls or cropping can obscure it.
- Use audio only when it is intentional and properly licensed. Check that the countdown or intermission clip does not leave unintended silence, abrupt audio, or a much louder level than the program.
- Preview every scene and transition before the broadcast, including the moment a looping clip reaches its end.
YouTube’s copyright rules apply to music, video, and other material in the waiting and break screens as well as to the main program. A technically valid loop is not permission to rebroadcast material. Review the copyright safety checklist before using third-party content.
Reliability and replay limits
A continuous broadcast depends on the computer running OBS, its network connection, the media playback, and the YouTube ingest session remaining available. Run a monitored test before leaving the setup unattended; scene automation alone does not guarantee an uninterrupted stream.

YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not establish that one uninterrupted 24/7 stream will produce a single complete replay. If retaining each program matters, check YouTube’s current limits and consider separate broadcasts or a local recording workflow. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube shows no incoming preview | OBS is not sending to the expected ingest or the stream key is wrong. | Check the server URL and key in OBS against the selected stream in Live Control Room. If the key was reset, update it in OBS. |
| The countdown or intermission clip does not repeat | Loop is off, or the wrong media source is active. | Open that scene’s Media Source properties and verify Loop; confirm the source points to the intended file. |
| A clip resumes partway through after switching back | Playback is not configured to restart on activation. | Enable Restart playback when source becomes active if every activation should start at the beginning. |
| A playlist source is unavailable | VLC may be missing or may not match OBS’s architecture. | Install the matching VLC architecture and verify the playlist paths. |
| Viewers see the wrong scene or a harsh change | The scene was not switched as intended, or the transition was not checked in the output. | Watch OBS’s Program output while switching scenes and verify the selected Fade or Cut transition. |
| A scheduled broadcast waits for a manual start | Auto-start may be disabled, or this stream’s workflow requires confirmation. | Check the stream’s Live Control Room status and auto-start setting; test the exact scheduled workflow before relying on it. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not keep OBS and a computer running at home, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload your recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud loops the video; your computer can be off.
