Usually, no. If YouTube has already applied a copyright strike, deleting the livestream VOD (the replay) will not remove it. Deleting can prevent a strike only when YouTube has issued a scheduled copyright removal request and you delete the video within the seven-day action window. Check the notice email and YouTube Studio to see which situation applies.
First, check whether the takedown is pending or the strike is active
- Read the copyright email from YouTube and open the affected video or notice in YouTube Studio.
- Look for the status “Copyright – pending takedown.” That indicates a scheduled removal request. You have seven days from the notice to take an available action, including deleting the video, to avoid a strike. See YouTube Help: About copyright removal requests.
- If the video has already been removed and YouTube says a copyright strike is active, deleting any remaining copy or replay will not clear the strike.
Do not rely on the fact that the livestream has ended or that its replay is no longer visible. The notice and the item’s status in Studio determine whether the scheduled-request exception is still available.

What deletion does in each situation
| What YouTube shows | Will deleting the VOD help? | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| “Copyright – pending takedown,” within the seven-day window | Yes. Deleting the video within the window can prevent the scheduled request from becoming a strike. | Use the action described in the notice and confirm the status in Studio. |
| The seven-day window has passed, but the request has not been resolved | Deletion no longer resolves the strike once the window has elapsed. | Follow the notice and review the available strike-resolution options; do not assume deletion will settle the matter. |
| The removal is complete and a strike is active | No. Deleting the VOD does not remove the active strike. | Consider the official strike-resolution routes below. |
YouTube states: “After the seven days are over, deleting the content won’t resolve the copyright strike.” The seven-day option is specific to a scheduled removal request; it is not a general grace period for deleting a video after a strike.

A Content ID claim and a copyright removal request are different processes. A Content ID claim typically does not itself give your channel a copyright strike, while a valid copyright removal request can. Check the exact wording in Studio before deciding what to do. YouTube explains the distinction in YouTube Help: Content ID claims and YouTube Help: About copyright removal requests.

If Studio shows a claim rather than a strike, deleting the VOD is not a way to erase a strike that was never issued. The claim may still affect the video under the claimant’s chosen policy; review the claim details and the options YouTube presents.
Options when a copyright strike is active
YouTube lists three routes for resolving an active strike. Choose based on the facts of your case, not on an expectation that removing the replay will reverse the takedown.

- Complete Copyright School and wait 90 days. YouTube says a strike can expire after Copyright School is completed and 90 days have passed. Expiration does not reinstate the removed video.
- Ask the claimant for a retraction. A retraction must come from the claimant; deleting the VOD is not a substitute for one.
- Submit a counter notification if the removal was mistaken or misidentified. This is a legal request, not a routine appeal. YouTube forwards it to the claimant, so consider the disclosure implications before submitting.
For the platform’s current process, see YouTube Help: Understand copyright strikes and YouTube Help: Submit a copyright counter notification. YouTube does not decide who owns disputed material or mediate the underlying ownership dispute. If you are unsure whether a counter notification is appropriate, seek qualified legal advice.

If YouTube removes an active livestream for copyright, it says the channel’s live-streaming access is restricted for seven days. If the channel receives another copyright strike, the restriction is 14 days. These restrictions concern live-streaming access; deleting the VOD does not shorten them. What this means for creators in India
YouTube’s India-localized Help pages describe the platform’s notice, takedown and strike procedures. They do not determine whether a particular use of music, footage or other material is lawful under Indian law. That depends on the content and circumstances; do not assume that a copyright exception automatically applies. For a contested question about Indian law, consult a qualified Indian lawyer.
Prevent the next livestream from creating the same risk
- Use music, footage and other material you have permission to use, or that is otherwise cleared for your intended stream and replay.
- Keep records of licenses and permissions, including their scope and any limits on livestreaming, archiving or monetization.
- Review the livestream and replay for third-party material, and treat a Content ID claim and a removal notice as distinct notices with different consequences.
- Use YouTube’s copyright information and removal-request guidance to understand the platform process. A checklist cannot guarantee that a stream will avoid a claim or takedown.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your channel uses uploaded videos for an always-on YouTube stream, StreamNeo can loop them from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live. It does not clear or prevent a copyright strike, and it plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a camera feed. Check rights for every video and track before streaming.
