In OBS, create a study scene and a break scene, then add a timer visual to the study scene and switch to the break scene when needed. For a repeating break animation, use a looping media source. YouTube Live Control Room also offers a temporary Take a Break slate, but its countdown does not end the break automatically. These steps build the visuals and controls; they do not guarantee that a computer or internet connection will run uninterrupted for 24/7.
Build the study and break scenes in OBS
- Create two scenes. In OBS, add one scene for the study presentation and another for the break screen. Scenes are layouts made from sources; the OBS overview uses examples such as Welcome, Desktop, Break, and End.
- Add the visuals. In the study scene, add your background or study video, then add a text or browser source for a timer. In the break scene, add break artwork, text, a video, or a browser source. OBS documents these source types, but does not provide a built-in countdown-timer procedure in the cited source guide. You can use a timer implementation in a browser source or prepare a video asset that already contains a countdown. OBS sources guide.
- Layer and place the timer. Sources higher in OBS’s Sources list appear above lower sources. Use the visibility eye to show or hide a source, and the preview’s transform controls to position and resize it. Place the timer above the background so it remains legible.
- Choose how to change scenes. OBS has Fade and Cut transitions available by default. Select a transition and duration, then switch scenes with a hotkey or use Studio Mode. Studio Mode lets you prepare the next scene in the edit area before sending it to the live output. OBS overview.
Loop a break video or playlist
One local video or audio file
Add a Media Source and enable Loop in its settings to restart the local file after it finishes. OBS lists support for video formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM, as well as common audio formats. OBS Media Sources.

Several files in sequence
Use the VLC Video source for a playlist. Its Loop Playlist setting is enabled by default. VLC must be installed; OBS notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. Use a single Media Source for a straightforward repeating asset, or VLC Video when you need a playlist.

Use YouTube Live’s Take a Break slate
YouTube Live Control Room has a Take a Break option that shows a temporary away slate for 1, 3, or 5 minutes. The countdown reaching zero does not end the break: you must end it in Live Control Room. See YouTube Help: Monetize your live stream.

You can also add YouTube’s break overlay to OBS as a Browser Source:
- In Live Control Room settings, copy the break-overlay URL.
- In OBS, add a Browser Source and paste the URL.
- Set the browser source dimensions to match your stream resolution.
- Enable Shutdown source when not visible.
- Test the overlay before going live.
The overlay does not mute other stream audio. Mute your microphone separately before stepping away. If you use a custom video slate with sound, check its audio routing as well. YouTube’s custom video slate must be public or unlisted, embeddable, and not a Premiere, members-only, monetized, or copyright-claimed video.

Troubleshoot common problems
- The break video stops at the end: Check that Loop is enabled on the Media Source. For a multi-file playlist, check VLC Video’s Loop Playlist setting.
- The timer is hidden behind the background: Move its source higher in the Sources list; sources higher in the list appear above lower ones.
- The YouTube break ends on screen but the stream remains on the slate: End the break manually in Live Control Room after the countdown.
- Viewers can still hear the microphone: The break overlay does not mute other audio. Mute the microphone separately and verify routing for any slate audio.
- The custom YouTube slate will not play: Confirm the video is public or unlisted and embeddable, and is not a Premiere, members-only, monetized, or copyright-claimed video.
- The VLC source is unavailable: Install VLC and match its architecture to OBS; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
