How to Adapt Resident Evil Puzzles and Control-Style Paranormal Powers for D&D 5e

Build the adventure with Resident Evil‘s structure—visible mechanisms, gated routes, traps, scarce tools, backtracking and an escape clock—then add Control‘s power fantasy through tightly bounded telekinesis, evasive movement and hostile spaces. In 5e, every major inference should be discoverable from the fiction, every failed attempt should cost time or safety rather than halt the story, and every paranormal effect should consume an action, reaction, charge, position or consequence.

Start with the two design jobs

The two inspirations solve different problems. Resident Evil supplies scenario architecture: a location full of mechanisms, locked routes, traps, creatures and resource decisions. Capcom’s retrospective describes its survival-horror formula as “Puzzles, traps and all manner of creatures await.” (Capcom, Enter the Survival Horror, 2020.) Control supplies the player-facing fantasy: objects become weapons, movement ignores ordinary geometry and the building itself is unreliable. Remedy describes spaces in which “gravity and orientation shift entirely.” (Remedy Entertainment, 2026.)

Do not try to turn every puzzle into a spell or every supernatural ability into a new subsystem. Let the mansion, laboratory, archive or impossible office remain a readable obstacle course, and let powers create additional approaches inside that course. The tension comes from deciding when a shortcut is worth its cost.

Make horror puzzles legible before they become difficult

Show the mechanism and its payoff

Put the sealed door, pressure plate, breaker, emblem socket, lift or ritual frame in the characters’ view. Also show what success changes: a refuge becomes reachable, a shortcut opens, a key cabinet unlocks, or an escape route powers up. Players can only reason about a mechanism they know exists and can connect to a meaningful result.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Describe state changes physically. A dead lift has a dangling cable and a control panel with no light; a reinforced door has fresh bolts on the inside; a pressure plate is worn clean around its edges. When a clue is relevant, give it a concrete location rather than saying that a character “notices something important.”

Give every required inference three independent clues

For each conclusion the party must reach, place three different kinds of evidence:

  • Visual pattern: a mural, repeated symbol, color order, architectural alignment or matching scratches.
  • Written or spoken clue: a gardener’s note, maintenance log, recording, inscription or witness account.
  • Spatial or tactile confirmation: the order of pipes, the weight of a loose component, a vibration behind the correct panel or a footprint leading to the mechanism.

The clues should converge without requiring a die roll. Investigation, Arcana, Perception or thieves’ tools can reveal a shortcut, explain an implication or reduce risk, but a failed check must not erase the only path forward. A character who rolls poorly may need another minute, expend a tool or face a worse consequence; they should not be unable to continue because the table missed one hidden sentence.

Gate routes with tools, not arbitrary permission

Keys, fuses, chemicals, crests, crank handles and replacement parts create the routing decisions associated with survival-horror inventory play. Place the required item in the current area or in a room the party has already seen, so discovering a locked mechanism creates a plan rather than a dead end.

Give objects a reason to occupy space. A fuse is fragile and single-use, a crank is bulky, a chemical reagent is dangerous near heat, and a crest bears a symbol that may fit more than one socket. Those properties make carrying, leaving and retrieving items meaningful choices without needing a separate inventory game.

Let failed attempts move the danger forward

A wrong sequence should advance an alarm, attract a patrol, consume a fuse, close a safe route or impose a temporary condition. It should not make the adventure unsolvable. A failed roll can still produce a partial result, reveal which element was wrong or open the mechanism while worsening the situation.

Use a visible clock with a small number of segments. Fill one segment when the party makes a noisy attempt, rests in an unsafe room, fails a dangerous interaction or uses a major power in a confined space. When the clock fills, change the fiction: a creature arrives, lights fail, a door locks, or the building shifts. The clock is pressure, not a secret punishment.

Escalate after each unlock

Every opened room should alter at least one variable. Add a harder inference, a shorter safe window, a more dangerous patrol, a new environmental rule or a resource trade. If the first puzzle asks for a symbol sequence, the next might require maintaining power while crossing a flooded hall; the third might force the party to choose between a shortcut and the only spare fuse.

A complete puzzle-conversion procedure

  1. Place the payoff in sight. Describe the sealed route and what it would provide before asking the party to search.
  2. Seed three clues. Use one visual, one verbal or written and one spatial or tactile clue for each required inference.
  3. Put the tool on the route. The key item must be discoverable now or in a previously visited location.
  4. Define the cost before play. Decide what a wrong attempt, loud action or failed check advances on the alarm clock.
  5. Offer checks as modifiers. A successful check reduces time, identifies a safe component or preserves a resource; it does not create the sole solution.
  6. Change the situation on success. Opening the door should reveal a new route, clue, threat or choice rather than simply end the scene.

These steps fit the core 5e treatment of traps and objects. The D&D Basic Rules, “Running the Game”, describe mechanical and magical traps through triggers, effects, detection and ways to disable or avoid them. The same rules allow objects to be damaged or destroyed when characters have enough time and suitable tools. Use those procedures for the physical parts of a puzzle, then add your clock and clues for pacing.

Worked example: the mansion breaker room

Three breaker boxes carry botanical symbols: seed, vine and flower. A gardener’s note gives the safe growth order. Roots painted on a corridor mural repeat that sequence, while a snapped fuse marks the box someone tried first. The party can deduce the order without a check, but a roll can reveal that the damaged box will arc if powered before the seed box.

A wrong attempt advances a one-round alarm and a wandering-monster clock. On the next round, the group may finish the interaction, retreat or spend a turn cutting power. A spare fuse or tool kit removes the immediate equipment cost but does not erase noise already made. Success opens a shortcut and a cabinet containing the next key item. The newly accessible route contains a harder choice: carry the spare fuse into a flooded gallery, or leave it behind and risk being unable to restore power later.

Notice what the example does not do. It does not hide the entire solution behind Investigation, require a single exact object with no clue, or reset the room after a mistake. The players retain agency while the location becomes more dangerous.

Build Control-style powers as a narrow suite

Paranormal abilities work best when they are expressive but not universal. Give characters a few reliable interactions with objects and space, then constrain them with range, line of sight, action economy, recharges and environmental counters. The following are homebrew starting points, not official 5e rules.

Power Use Limit and cost How the environment answers it
Launch Action; hurl one unattended object at a creature within 60 feet. Make a ranged spell attack; on a hit, deal 2d8 bludgeoning damage and push the target 10 feet. Requires line of sight and a loose object. Increase damage only at major level milestones or by spending a charge. Heavy objects need setup; anchored or fragile objects may be unavailable; anti-paranormal wards can block the effect.
Seize Once per short rest, a weakened creature within 30 feet makes a Wisdom save or is charmed until the end of your next turn. Save DC is 8 + proficiency bonus + key ability modifier. The effect ends early when the creature takes damage. Major foes may be immune or have advantage. Use it on an already weakened target, not as an opening solution to every encounter.
Evade Bonus action; move or teleport up to 15 feet to a space you can see. Uses equal to proficiency bonus per long rest, or a visible stress clock that can run out during the scenario. Blocked sight lines, unstable floors and wards can deny the destination.
Shield Reaction when hit; gain +3 AC against that attack and reduce its damage by 1d8 + proficiency bonus. Once per short rest. It protects against one blow, not an entire hazard, collapsing room or ongoing effect.

Launch: make objects matter

Launch is strongest when the room contains meaningful ammunition. A desk, loose pipe, filing cabinet or stone fragment can become a tactical choice. State whether an object is unattended, how large it is and whether it can be moved before the player commits an action. If the group spends time positioning a heavy object, that setup should expose them to the same alarm or pursuit clock as any other noisy interaction.

Keep the damage near a cantrip or weapon attack. The push is often more valuable than the dice, so terrain should matter: a railing, hazard or closing door creates opportunity without inflating damage. Do not let Launch lift creatures, bypass every locked door or move objects the fiction has established as anchored unless the scene specifically grants that capability.

Seize: short control with a clear prerequisite

Requiring a weakened target prevents Seize from replacing every social, stealth and combat decision. “Weakened” can mean below half hit points, affected by a named condition or exposed by a puzzle in the room; choose one definition and state it. Charmed until the end of the next turn is long enough to reposition or force a brief opening, but too short to remove a major enemy from an entire encounter.

Major foes can be immune or have advantage, especially creatures that are constructs, mindless predators or manifestations of the building. Tell players when a target’s nature makes the power unreliable so they can choose another plan.

Evade: mobility that does not erase geography

Fifteen feet and a visible destination make Evade a repositioning tool rather than a universal escape. It can cross a gap only if the destination is a legal space the character can see. A wall, sealed door, darkness or shifting geometry can prevent use. Tie the recharge to proficiency bonus per long rest for a predictable character resource, or to a visible stress clock when you want the location itself to control the pacing.

Shield: one reaction, one decision

Shield should compete with opportunity attacks, counterspells or other reactions. The +3 AC applies to the triggering attack only; the damage reduction applies after the hit is confirmed. A once-per-short-rest limit keeps it valuable without making the character immune to attrition. Environmental damage, ongoing effects and collapsing structures should use their own rules rather than being silently negated.

Attach every major ability to a place or relic

A power becomes part of the horror story when its origin is tangible. Bind Launch to a relic recovered from a sealed office, Seize to a ritual performed in a contaminated chapel, Evade to a room where orientation changes, and Shield to a damaged object of power. The characters then have a reason to investigate the location, and the location can impose a price when the ability is used.

On a failed activation, create a consequence that is specific and visible: psychic noise alerts a creature, hostile geometry changes the map, a temporary condition blurs perception, or an attention clock advances. Avoid vague “the power malfunctions” narration; show which door moved, which light died or which enemy heard the signal.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Relics can also be interrupted. An anti-paranormal ward may block Launch in one corridor, a grounding rod may prevent Evade across a threshold, or a creature may learn to attack the object rather than its wielder. Counters make the powers part of the puzzle instead of a universal answer.

Use the inspect-to-consequence session loop

Run each room through the same six-beat loop:

  1. Inspect: describe mechanisms, exits, useful objects and immediate threats.
  2. Hypothesize: let players state what they think the room is asking them to do.
  3. Interact: resolve the chosen physical action, spell, tool or paranormal power.
  4. Pay or risk a cost: spend a charge, make noise, expose a character or advance the clock.
  5. Unlock: change the map or reveal the next clue.
  6. Consequence: introduce the patrol, shift, resource loss or new decision created by that change.

Keep one alarm or pursuit clock visible to the table. Advance it for failed attempts, unsafe rests, loud combat and large powers used in confined spaces. Do not add several hidden clocks unless the group can understand their effects; one legible meter creates pressure without turning the session into bookkeeping.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Give costed hints when the table stalls

When discussion stops, offer a hint in exchange for a concrete price: advance the clock, consume a tool, attract a patrol or impose a level of fatigue-like stress defined for the adventure. The first hint can identify the relevant room, the second can connect two clues, and the third can state the action. Players retain the choice to accept the cost, and the story keeps moving.

Design encounters around four comparison axes

Axis Resident Evil emphasis Control-inspired emphasis D&D implementation
Puzzle legibility Environmental patterns, mechanisms and route locks. Improvisation with movable geometry. Three clues per inference; list loose objects and visible anomalies.
Pressure Traps, creatures, scarce tools and escape timers. Cooldowns, charges, unstable spaces and positioning. One visible clock plus explicit recharge rules.
Agency Locks constrain choices through clues and inventory. Powers broaden choices through movement and object interaction. Offer multiple routes, but make each route spend time, safety or resources.
Action economy Interacting exposes the party and consumes time. Actions, reactions, bonus actions and charges limit powers. Write the cost into every ability and puzzle interaction before play.

Use the table as a design check, not a promise that every scene must contain all four elements. A quiet clue room may emphasize legibility; a chase may emphasize pressure and movement. The campaign feels coherent when players can tell which variable is currently under threat.

Plan a short adventure with escalating rooms

Room one: teach the language

Start with a harmless mechanism that demonstrates the three-clue rule and reveals a useful object. Let players test a paranormal power on ordinary furniture so they understand line of sight, object requirements and action costs before danger becomes severe.

Room two: introduce the first trade

Present a locked route and two possible tools. One is safe but slow; the other is fast but advances the clock or risks a condition. Make the consequence visible before the choice, then let the group commit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Room three: combine puzzle and pursuit

Require an interaction while a creature patrols or an alarm counts down. A character can hold the threat, another can manipulate the mechanism, and a third can use Launch or Evade to create space. The solution should remain inferable even while the scene is dangerous.

Final room: make the building answer back

Use a larger mechanism that changes orientation, seals familiar routes or turns previous tools into liabilities. The climax should test whether players understand their powers’ limits: a heavy object requires preparation, a ward blocks the obvious shortcut, and the safest route costs the last charge. Give the party a meaningful escape decision rather than a single correct button.

Troubleshoot common failure modes

The players cannot find the clue

Restate visible details, connect two already discovered facts and offer a costed hint. Never add a new mandatory roll simply because the original description was too subtle.

One power solves every room

Reassert the written limits: line of sight, unattended objects, weakened targets, visible destinations and recharge. Then change the environment, not the character sheet. Anchor the needed object, break sight lines, add fragile evidence or place a ward where appropriate. Do not retroactively declare that a previously legal use was impossible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Combat overwhelms the puzzle

Lower enemy durability, make the objective independent of hit points or let environmental actions end the encounter. A creature can be defeated, delayed, trapped or bypassed; the puzzle should not require grinding through a full combat before the route opens.

The clock feels arbitrary

Announce what advances it and show its current state. Each segment should correspond to a fictional change the players can anticipate: footsteps approach, lights fail, doors reinforce or geometry shifts. If the group is making informed choices, a filled clock feels like consequence rather than punishment.

Backtracking becomes busywork

Change the old route when the party returns. A newly powered lift may open a shortcut, a creature may occupy the former safe room, or a previous clue may now be readable from a different angle. Backtracking should reveal a changed state, not repeat an empty walk.

Final preparation checklist

  • Can the players see each mechanism and its payoff?
  • Does every required inference have visual, verbal and spatial evidence?
  • Is every essential tool reachable in the current or a previously visited area?
  • What exactly happens after a wrong attempt or failed check?
  • Which action, range, line-of-sight and recharge limit governs each paranormal power?
  • What environmental counter prevents a power from answering every problem?
  • Which clock advances, and can the table see its state?
  • What changes after each unlock?
  • Can the final route be completed even after several costly mistakes?

When those answers are written down, the mashup has a stable foundation: the location supplies readable, escalating survival-horror decisions, while the powers let characters improvise inside rules that remain fair at the table.
