Check the Windows edition and activation status
Open Settings > System > Activation. The Activation page shows the installed Windows edition and its activation state. A Windows 11 Pro key must match the installed edition; it will not turn a Home installation into Pro simply by being entered as though Home were already Pro.

Find out whether you have a key or a digital license
Windows can activate with either a 25-character product key or a digital license. Microsoft defines a product key as “a 25-character code used to activate Windows.” Where to find it depends on how Windows was obtained:
- New PC: Check the device packaging or Certificate of Authenticity (COA).
- Boxed copy: Check the label inside the box.
- Digital copy from an authorized retailer: Check the confirmation email or the retailer’s digital locker.
- Windows 11 Pro upgrade bought through Microsoft Store: This provides a digital license, not a product key. Check the Microsoft account used for the purchase.

Enter a Windows 11 Pro product key
- Open Activation settings: Select Settings > System > Activation.
- Choose Change product key: Select that option on the Activation page.
- Enter the key: Type the 25-character Windows 11 Pro key, then follow the on-screen instructions.
- Check the result: Return to the Activation page and confirm the activation status.
Use a key for the Windows version and edition installed. If an error appears, note its exact code before trying another fix; the code and the device’s licensing context point to different causes.
If Windows 11 Home is installed
A Pro key requires a Pro edition. To move from Windows 11 Home to Pro, use Microsoft’s Home-to-Pro upgrade instructions. You can enter the Pro key through the Change product key window, or use the Microsoft Store upgrade route. If you already have a Pro digital license but Home is installed, Microsoft directs users to the Activation troubleshooter and the Upgrade to Windows 11 Pro option. If your license is for Home but Pro is installed, install the matching Home edition or obtain a Pro license.

After a major hardware change
A motherboard replacement or other significant hardware change can affect activation. Confirm that the same Windows edition is installed as before. If the digital license was linked to your Microsoft account, run the Activation troubleshooter; if activation used a product key, have that key available. What activation confirms—and what it does not
Activation associates a product key or digital entitlement with a device configuration, but it does not by itself establish that a Windows copy is genuine or properly licensed. Microsoft’s OEM license terms state: “Successful activation does not confirm that the software is genuine or properly licensed.” Use a legitimate license for the installed edition; avoid tools or methods that bypass activation, which Microsoft’s license terms prohibit.
