If possible, measure PAR where the coral will sit; fixture percentages alone cannot tell you how much light reaches it. There is no single acclimation schedule for every coral, aquarium, or fixture.
First, identify what changed
A new fixture, a substantial increase in output, a change in mounting height, or a coral entering an established lighting schedule can all change the light reaching coral tissue. The right transition depends on the coral’s previous exposure, its new position, and the particular fixture. Manufacturer schedules are useful examples for their own systems, not universal rules.

- Replacing or upgrading a fixture: Use the fixture’s acclimation controls or follow its manual if available, starting below the intended operating level.
- Adding a coral to a settled aquarium: Begin in a lower-light position and move it toward its intended location gradually, observing its response.
- Changing height or rockwork: Recheck light at coral locations. A small change in placement can alter exposure even when the fixture settings stay the same.
Measure the light at the coral’s position
A PAR meter can help map the light reaching the intended placement and nearby alternatives. PAR is an intensity measure; it does not by itself show whether the spectrum or the aquarium’s overall husbandry is appropriate. Some local fish stores may rent a meter, though availability varies.
Bulk Reef Supply offers these broad PAR ranges as starting points, while advising readers to check the needs of individual corals. They are guidance, not targets that guarantee success:

| Coral group | Broad PAR guide | Source context |
|---|---|---|
| Soft corals | 75–150 PAR | Bulk Reef Supply guidance; publication year not stated in the retrieved article. |
| LPS corals | 150–250 PAR | Bulk Reef Supply guidance; publication year not stated in the retrieved article. |
| SPS corals | 250–350+ PAR | Bulk Reef Supply guidance; publication year not stated in the retrieved article. |
Readings vary with fixture height, water depth and clarity, and rockwork. Map the actual coral locations rather than relying on a fixture’s advertised output or a reading taken elsewhere in the tank. (Bulk Reef Supply PAR guidance).
Choose a gradual transition, not a universal percentage
If your light has a programmed acclimation mode, it can automate gradual increases. Set a schedule appropriate to the coral’s starting exposure and intended placement, and keep the pattern steady enough to notice changes. Percentages are not comparable between different fixtures: the same setting can deliver different light at the coral.

Examples from manufacturer guidance
| System and situation | Published example | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Red Sea MAX E-Series new setup | Begin at no more than 60% of maximum peak intensity; increase by 10% every two weeks during an eight-week acclimation. | Specific to the MAX E-Series manual, whose publication year is not established on the retrieved page. Do not treat it as a schedule for other fixtures. |
| Red Sea ReefLED system without previous LED lighting | Start at 50% of the selected D-Program intensity and take 50 days to reach the full program intensity. | Specific to Red Sea’s ReefLED FAQ; the FAQ’s publication date is not stated. |
| EcoTech Radion using Mobius | Mobius offers an Acclimation Mode that gradually increases intensity over a selected period of days or weeks. | Use the controls and guidance for the specific fixture and software rather than assuming a particular percentage or duration. |
Red Sea describes its ReefLED program as starting at lower intensity and increasing it each day over the acclimation period. Use the manufacturer instructions for your exact light and program: these examples differ because they apply to different products and circumstances. Red Sea’s MAX E-Series manual recommends placing newly introduced corals lower and gradually raising them over several weeks. Treat that as product-context guidance, not a fixed timetable for every coral. Choose a starting location based on the coral’s known prior lighting and the measured or estimated light at the new position; observe before moving it higher.

- Check what lighting the coral experienced previously, if that information is available.
- Place it in a lower-light area rather than immediately at the brightest intended position.
- Watch its tissue and polyp behavior before making a gradual move toward the destination.
- Pause or reverse the move if signs of photo stress appear.
Recognize possible photo stress and respond
Upper-tissue whitening or bleaching, retracted polyps, and gas bubbles in soft tissue are warning signs identified in Red Sea’s MAX E-Series manual. They do not prove that lighting is the cause; coral problems can have other explanations. If these signs appear during a lighting change, reduce peak intensity and consider moving the coral lower while it recovers.
The same Red Sea manual gives a specific recovery example: reduce peak intensity by 20% for about four weeks, then increase by 5% weekly. Those figures belong to that manual’s context and are not a general treatment prescription. Follow the guidance for your fixture, and make changes carefully enough to assess the coral’s response.

- 2 Lighting Modes: Short press the M button repeatedly on the fish tank light to switch between daytime and night modes. Hold the M button for 3 seconds to turn all lights off. Simulate natural sunrise and sunset to energize your fish and give them a sound sleep.
- 6 Intensity Levels: Daytime Mode (all lights are on): Press the W button to control the brightness of white and red lights and press the B button to control that of the blue light. Night Mode (only blue light is on): Press the B button to adjust the luminance.
- For 12" to 18" Tanks: With an extendable bracket (min length: up to 11.5"; max length: up to 20"), the LED aquarium light always stays steady on the fish tank. Work best on tanks of 12 to 18 inches long.
- Heavy-duty Design: FCC-certified aquarium light. The clear board is strictly sealed with silicone to keep out moisture or droplets. Solid aluminum shell can accelerate heat dissipation. The long-lasting bulbs and ETL-certified adapter ensure safe and continuous lighting.
Keep the adjustment observable
Change intensity in stages rather than making several large lighting or placement changes at once. Keep notes on settings, PAR readings if available, coral position, and visible responses. That gives you a useful record if you need to pause or backtrack, without assuming that a particular percentage or PAR reading suits every coral.
