Thunderbird for iPhone and iPad is still in development, according to Mozilla Support’s Thunderbird FAQ, updated June 23, 2026; Mozilla has not announced a release date. You can still read the same email account on an iPhone or iPad by adding it to Apple Mail. Thunderbird is an email app, while your email account is provided by a mail service—setting up that account in Apple Mail does not install Thunderbird.
Set up your email account in Apple Mail
On current iPhone and iPad software, open Settings > Apps > Mail > Mail Accounts > Add Account. If your Settings labels differ, search Settings for “Mail.” Apple’s account setup instructions cover both automatic sign-in and manual configuration.

If your email provider is listed
- Tap the provider, such as iCloud, Google, Microsoft Exchange, or Yahoo.
- Enter the email address for the account you use with Thunderbird and follow the provider’s sign-in prompts. An authorization screen may appear.
- Let Mail verify and configure the account. When setup completes, open Mail and check that the account’s messages appear.
If your email provider is not listed
- Tap Add Other Account > Mail Account.
- Enter your name, email address, password, and a description for the account, then tap Next.
- Wait while Mail tries to find the settings. If it cannot, select IMAP or POP when prompted and enter the incoming and outgoing mail server details supplied by your email provider.
- Save the account if Mail verifies the settings.
Use the protocol and server details supplied for your particular account. If you do not know them or setup fails, Apple advises contacting your email provider. Mozilla’s desktop manual-configuration guide also explains that server values depend on the provider; its examples are not universal iPhone settings.
Choose automatic or manual setup

Fix common setup problems
Mail rejects the password
Check your provider’s current sign-in requirements. The account may require an authorization prompt or an app-specific password. The right steps vary by provider; do not disable account security to make setup work. If you cannot complete sign-in, contact the provider.

Mail cannot find the server settings
Ask your provider for the exact incoming and outgoing server names, the required protocol, ports, connection security, and authentication requirements. Do not copy generic settings or desktop Thunderbird examples unless your provider confirms they apply to your account.
You are unsure whether to choose IMAP or POP
Check your provider’s instructions before choosing. The available protocol and how messages behave across devices depend on the account and provider; Apple directs users who are unsure to contact the provider.

What this setup does—and does not do
Adding the account to Apple Mail gives you a way to access that email on your iPhone or iPad using Apple’s mail app. It does not install Thunderbird or transfer the Thunderbird application. Mozilla’s FAQ says iOS development is in progress and that a public announcement will come when it is ready for users; it does not give a release date.
