Neither foam nor silicone ear tips are universally better for sound or fit. The better choice is the compatible tip that seals comfortably and stays in place in your ears. A poor seal can weaken bass, so check fit before deciding that one material sounds better.
What matters more: foam or silicone?
For most in-ear earphones, fit and seal are a better starting point than material. Shure says that earphone fit can greatly affect sound quality; it also notes that weak bass may mean the sleeve is not sealing properly. The sound you hear depends on the tip size, your ear shape, insertion, and the earphone—not simply whether a tip is foam or silicone. Shure’s Earphone Resource Center recommends selecting a sleeve that fits comfortably, is easy to insert and remove, and provides good sound isolation.

Foam sleeves compress for insertion and expand in the ear; Shure’s instructions say to hold its foam sleeves in place while they expand. Soft-flex sleeves are pliable and come in several sizes. These are different ways to achieve a suitable fit, not evidence that one material has better bass, treble, soundstage, comfort, or safety for every listener.
How to choose a tip that fits and sounds right
- Check the seal. If bass sounds weak, the tip feels loose, or it shifts when you move, try repositioning it or testing another compatible size. A seal that feels comfortable and stable is a more useful goal than choosing material by reputation.
- Compare comfort over your usual listening session. A tip may feel acceptable at first but become uncomfortable with longer wear. Choose based on your ears and how you use the earphones.
- Consider movement and handling. Notice whether the tip stays put and whether you can insert and remove it easily.
- Check the earphone and case. Replacement tips must fit the nozzle and attachment system; some may also interfere with the charging or storage case. Do not assume that a third-party tip will fit.
- Follow the earphone maker’s instructions. In Shure’s SE215 guidance, replacement sleeves must grip the nozzle tightly and fully cover its barb; the guide also says to keep sleeves clean and dry and replace them if they no longer fit properly. Those details apply to that product family, so follow the instructions for your own model.
How to troubleshoot weak bass or an unstable fit
- Gently reposition the current tip and listen for whether bass improves.
- Try another compatible size or sleeve style. A different size may seal better even if the original tip seemed comfortable.
- If you are using Shure foam sleeves, compress the sleeve, insert it carefully, and hold it in place while it expands. Do not push a sleeve beyond the ear-canal opening. Other earphones may have different insertion instructions.
- If no compatible tip produces a comfortable, stable seal, consult the earphone maker’s fit guidance rather than forcing a tip that hurts or feels insecure.
What the studies do—and do not—show
The available comparisons do not establish a universal sound-quality winner for consumer earphones. The closest direct foam-versus-silicone comparison located measured hearing protection, not music playback.

Hearing-protection attenuation is not headphone sound quality
In a 2010 study, Olav Kvaløy, Tone Berg, and Viggo Henriksen compared foam and custom-moulded silicone plugs used in an electronic hearing-protection and communication system with a leak check. The authors reported greater attenuation from the foam plug at all measured frequencies, particularly below 2 kHz: foam attenuation rose from 30 dB to 43 dB across 125 Hz–8 kHz, while silicone attenuation was around 26 dB from 125 Hz–1 kHz and rose to about 40 dB above that. With earmuffs added, the plugs offered nearly identical protection—40 dB or better except at 125 Hz. These results describe that particular protective system and experiment; they do not show that foam tips improve the sound of music earphones. The study’s fit procedure also did not exactly follow either of the two cited standard fit protocols. Read the study in the International Journal of Acoustics and Vibration.
General earplug guidance concerns protection
The American Academy of Audiology’s 2023 consumer brochure describes foam and silicone as common earplug materials used to create a seal for hearing protection. It notes that sizes and textures vary to help achieve a suitable fit and that custom-made earplugs are available through an audiologist. This is guidance about hearing protection, not a comparison of headphone sleeves or music quality. Read the American Academy of Audiology brochure.

An earphone field study did not isolate material performance
Phonak’s December 2008 field study of its Audéo PFE earphones offered 60 volunteers foam and silicone tips in small, medium, and large sizes, but the foam tips were pre-final and excluded from the reported results. Phonak reported that 87.93% of 58 participants found a comfortable silicone size, and 83.33% of 30 follow-up participants were satisfied with the earphone system’s sound quality after two weeks. Those manufacturer-reported results do not compare foam against silicone and do not establish that silicone is better. Read Phonak’s field study.
Buying replacement tips: check compatibility first
Shop for tips made for your earphone’s nozzle and attachment system, and check sizing and case clearance where relevant. For example, Shure lists Comply 100-Series replacement foam sleeves for compatible Sound Isolating earphones; that is a model-specific option, not a universal recommendation. Check Shure’s Comply 100-Series foam sleeves.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you use ear tips for hearing protection?
Do not treat ordinary music earphone sleeves as a substitute for hearing protection. Protective earplugs and headphone sleeves have related materials and both rely on fit, but they serve different purposes. Choose hearing-protection products appropriate to the noise exposure and use them according to their instructions; attenuation results from a protective-plug experiment do not promise a sound benefit from foam ear tips on consumer earphones.
