How to Access the NYT Connections Puzzle Archive and Replay Past Games

By Freedom251 Team · · 9 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The official New York Times Connections archive is available to Games and All Access subscribers, including eligible Home Delivery subscribers. It contains puzzles dating back to June 12, 2023. On the web, open NYT Games and choose Connections Archive from the navigation menu. In the iOS or Android Games app, sign in, open the Games tab, and select Connections Archive. Daily Connections remains free, but the complete historical archive requires a subscription and a signed-in New York Times account.

What the Connections archive is

The archive is the official replay library for past Connections puzzles. It lets an eligible subscriber work through the historical catalog instead of waiting for the puzzle released on the current day. The full archive reaches back to June 12, 2023, the earliest date identified in the New York Times Help Center’s current Connections documentation.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Daily Connections and the archive are different access levels. Anyone can play the daily puzzle under the normal free-play arrangement, while the archive is a subscriber feature. A New York Times account is also required if you want the service to retain archive progress and play history. Signing in allows that information to follow you between supported devices.

  1. Create or sign in to a New York Times account. Use the same account that holds your Games, All Access or eligible Home Delivery entitlement.
  2. Confirm subscription eligibility. A free account alone does not unlock the complete archive. Games and All Access subscribers qualify, and Home Delivery plans that include Games access qualify as well.
  3. Open the NYT Games area. Navigate to the Games section rather than the News site’s Play tab.
  4. Open the navigation menu. Choose Connections Archive.
  5. Select a puzzle. Choose an uncompleted entry from the archive and start playing. The archive marks entries according to their status, so you can distinguish puzzles you have not started from those already in progress or completed.

If the archive link does not appear, first verify that you are signed in to the account with the subscription. Then make sure you are in NYT Games, not the News app’s Play area. The archive entitlement is tied to the account, so signing in with a different address can make a valid subscription appear to be missing.

Finding the archive in the iOS or Android Games app

The Games app has a separate path from the News app. Install or open the Games app, sign in, and use its Games tab to reach the archive.

iPhone and iPad

  1. Open the NYT Games app.
  2. Open the Me tab.
  3. Choose Create a free account or Log In. If you already have an account, log in to the one associated with your Games, All Access or eligible Home Delivery plan.
  4. Open the Games tab after authentication.
  5. Select Connections Archive.
  6. Choose an uncompleted puzzle. Its status will show whether it has not been started, is in progress or is completed.

Android phones and tablets

  1. Open the NYT Games app.
  2. Open the three-line menu.
  3. Select Log in and authenticate with the account that has Games access.
  4. Return to the app’s Games tab.
  5. Choose Connections Archive, then select an uncompleted puzzle.

Do not look for this library in the News app’s Play tab. The archive is exposed through NYT Games on the web and through the Games tab in the dedicated Games app.

  • Not started: you have not opened or begun that puzzle.
  • In progress: you started it but have not completed it.
  • Completed: you finished it. A completed archived puzzle cannot be replayed.

That last rule matters when you are deciding whether to open an entry. Once you submit the completed puzzle, the archive does not provide a second attempt on that same entry. If you want to work through a date without committing a result, leave the puzzle unfinished rather than completing it.

What replaying an archived puzzle changes in your statistics

Archive play is recorded differently from the puzzle played on its original release day. The Help Center states that archived play updates several statistics, but it does not alter either streak counter.

Statistic or record Effect of completing an archived puzzle
Puzzles Completed Updated by archive completions
Win Rate Updated by archive results
Perfect Puzzles Updated when an archive result qualifies as perfect
Mistake Distribution Updated by the mistakes recorded in archive play
Current streak Not changed by archive play
Max streak Not changed by archive play

Current and maximum streaks are based on the puzzle played on its release day. In other words, an archive session can improve completion and accuracy-related totals without repairing, extending or breaking the daily streak record.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Help Center also identifies June 15, 2024 as the start date from which the Statistics page displays key Connections statistics. That date describes the statistics display window; it does not change the archive’s earlier puzzle coverage, which begins on June 12, 2023.

Which subscription do you need?

The archive entitlement follows Games access rather than the name of the particular plan you purchased. The documented eligibility is:

Plan or access route Connections archive access Where you can use it
Games subscription Yes Browser and iOS or Android Games app
All Access subscription Yes, because Games is included Browser and iOS or Android Games app
Eligible Home Delivery plan Yes, when the plan includes Games access Browser and iOS or Android Games app
Free New York Times account without Games eligibility No full historical archive access Daily Connections remains available under the free-play arrangement

The official subscription Help page directs readers to the subscription page for current pricing. The Help Center information describing archive access does not state a price, so check the subscription page for the amount and terms that apply to your region and billing route.

Subscription access and account identity are separate checks. You need both an eligible entitlement and a login. If you subscribed through one account but sign in with another, the Games app or website may correctly show that the currently signed-in account is not eligible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keeping progress and history synchronized

Sign in before starting an archive puzzle. The account is what preserves archive progress and play history across devices. For example, you can begin an uncompleted puzzle in a browser and later continue it in the Games app after signing in to the same account.

  • Use one New York Times account consistently on the web and in the app.
  • After changing devices, confirm that the same account is active before opening the archive.
  • Allow the puzzle to register its current state before closing the app or browser.
  • Check the archive’s status indicator rather than relying on memory to determine whether a puzzle is unfinished.

If a puzzle appears as not started on one device but in progress on another, verify the account first. A different login creates a different history view; it does not indicate that the archive has erased the original progress.

Troubleshooting common access problems

The Connections Archive option is missing

Check the access path in this order:

  1. Confirm that you are in NYT Games on the web or in the dedicated Games app.
  2. Confirm that you are not using the News app’s Play tab, where the archive is unavailable.
  3. Check the signed-in email or account identity.
  4. Verify that the account has Games, All Access or eligible Home Delivery access.
  5. Sign out and back in if the account was changed recently, then reopen the Games tab or web navigation menu.

A free account can still play the daily puzzle, so being able to open today’s Connections does not by itself prove that the account has archive eligibility.

The app asks you to log in again

Use the login controls supplied for your platform: on iOS, the Me tab contains Create a free account or Log In; on Android, open the three-line menu and choose Log in. After authentication, return to the Games tab and open Connections Archive. This ensures that the archive request is made by the account you just verified.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A puzzle is listed as completed and will not open for another attempt

That is expected behavior. The official archive does not support replaying a completed archived puzzle. Select another entry marked not started or in progress. If you completed the puzzle unintentionally, the archive’s completion state cannot be converted back into an unfinished attempt.

The archive result changed my totals but not my streak

That combination is normal. Archive play updates Puzzles Completed, Win Rate, Perfect Puzzles and Mistake Distribution, while Current and Max streaks remain based on release-day play. The two kinds of records are intentionally separated.

Statistics do not show older information

The Statistics page’s documented display of key Connections statistics begins on June 15, 2024. That statistics start date is distinct from the archive’s puzzle coverage beginning June 12, 2023, so an older playable puzzle and a statistics display covering that play are not necessarily governed by the same date range.

Using an independent archive instead

Connectionsgame.org advertises a free archive of past NYT Connections games, along with community and custom-puzzle features. Its archive page explicitly says it is not affiliated with The New York Times. Treat it as an independent service, not as an NYT product or endorsement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An independent site can be useful if you do not have Games access or want community-created material, but its account behavior, statistics, streak handling, puzzle coverage and app experience are separate from the official archive. Do not assume that a result there will appear in your New York Times statistics, or that an archive entry there follows the official completion rules.

Official archive versus an independent replay site

The choice depends on whether you need your play to remain part of the New York Times account history.

  • Choose the official archive when you want the publisher’s archive dating to June 12, 2023, synchronized progress on supported NYT Games surfaces, and updates to the documented Connections statistics.
  • Consider an independent archive when free access or community and custom puzzles matter more than integration with your New York Times account. Confirm the site’s affiliation statement and understand that it is separate from NYT systems.

The official route is the only one described by the New York Times Help Center as part of Games and All Access subscription benefits. The independent route is a separate website with its own policies and feature set.

A practical replay plan

  1. Decide whether the result must count toward NYT history. If it does, use the official archive while signed in to the eligible account.
  2. Confirm the platform. Use the NYT Games navigation menu in a browser or the Games tab in the iOS or Android Games app. Do not use the News app’s Play tab for archive access.
  3. Check the puzzle state before opening it. Start with an entry marked not started or in progress, remembering that completed entries cannot be replayed.
  4. Play without expecting a streak change. Archive results can affect completion, win-rate, perfect-puzzle and mistake-distribution figures, but not Current or Max streaks.
  5. Keep the same account on every device. This is the requirement for retaining progress and history across the web and Games app.
  6. Use an independent site only for a separate experience. Connectionsgame.org is not affiliated with The New York Times, so keep its play history conceptually separate from your official NYT record.

Daily Connections Free to play

Bottom line for replaying past Connections games

To replay official past games, sign in to a New York Times account with Games or All Access eligibility, open NYT Games on the web or the Games tab in the iOS or Android Games app, and choose Connections Archive. The library starts on June 12, 2023. Archive sessions update several completion and accuracy statistics but never change Current or Max streaks, and a completed archive puzzle cannot be opened for a second replay. If you need a free, separate archive, Connectionsgame.org offers one independently and does not represent The New York Times.
