To access cloud storage like a local drive, install the provider’s desktop app and choose its streaming or on-demand option. Your cloud files then appear in Finder or File Explorer, but most remain online until opened. Choose mirroring or mark specific files and folders for offline access when you need local copies. The right setup depends on your cloud provider, operating system, and whether you need files available without an internet connection.
Choose the right way to connect cloud storage
A file-manager entry or mount point can make cloud storage feel like a local drive, but it does not necessarily mean every file is downloaded. Streaming and on-demand modes show cloud items in the desktop file manager and download them when needed. Mirroring keeps a complete local copy, using storage on your device. For most users, the provider’s own desktop client is the simplest place to start; a configurable tool such as rclone is an alternative for advanced users or supported setups without a suitable native client.

| Option | Best suited to | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Google Drive for desktop | Google Drive users on supported Windows and macOS versions | Choose streaming or mirroring. On macOS 12.1 and later, streaming uses Apple File Provider and has distinct Finder behavior. |
| OneDrive desktop app | Personal or work users who want OneDrive items in their desktop file manager | Files On-Demand support depends on system requirements; macOS Files On-Demand requires APFS. |
| Dropbox desktop app | Dropbox users on supported Windows, macOS, or Linux systems | Check current operating-system, Linux distribution, and file-system requirements; Dropbox says its Linux desktop app is changing. |
| rclone mount | Advanced users who want a configurable mount for supported cloud remotes | Configure and authorize the remote first. Mount behavior and limitations vary by operating system and provider. |
Before installing anything, check your operating-system version, file system, account permissions, and any workplace administrator restrictions. The version examples below reflect vendor documentation accessed October 7, 2026; requirements can change.

Use Google Drive in Finder or File Explorer
Install Google Drive for desktop and choose how Drive files are stored. In streaming mode, files are stored in the cloud and downloaded when needed, as Google’s advanced Drive for desktop guide explains. Mirroring downloads a complete copy of My Drive to the computer, so it is available offline by default and takes local disk space.
#1 Best Overall
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Choose streaming or mirroring
- Stream files when you want Drive items visible without downloading the whole library. Open a file to download it as needed; select “Available offline” for items you want accessible without a connection.
- Mirror files when you want a complete local copy of My Drive. This uses storage on the device, but the copied files remain available offline.
The exact app screens can vary by operating system and version, so use Google’s current installation and setup instructions for your device. On macOS 12.1 and later, streaming uses Apple File Provider. Drive appears in Finder under Locations, and macOS may ask you to grant permissions.
Be careful when moving Drive files on macOS
With File Provider, moving an item out of the Google Drive location can move it out of Drive and trash the cloud item. If you want a separate local copy, Option-drag the item instead of moving it. Google describes this behavior in its macOS File Provider guidance.

Use OneDrive without downloading everything
OneDrive Files On-Demand displays files in File Explorer or Finder while letting you decide which ones are stored locally. In OneDrive’s Mac guidance, Microsoft says Files On-Demand requires APFS and lets you select files or folders and choose “Always keep on this device” to retain them locally for offline use. See Microsoft’s Files On-Demand instructions for Mac for the current steps.

Microsoft also lists August 15, 2026 as the end of support for the OneDrive desktop app on Windows 10 21H2 and earlier. Check the current OneDrive system requirements before relying on a particular version.

Use Dropbox in your desktop file manager
The Dropbox desktop app supports Windows, macOS, and Linux subject to current requirements. Linux support is especially dependent on distribution and file system: Dropbox’s guidance names Ubuntu 18.04 or later and Fedora 28 or later, along with supported file systems, and warns that its Linux desktop app is changing. Review Dropbox’s current Linux system requirements and verify your distribution before installing. The app’s supported systems and behavior may change over time.
Mount a cloud remote with rclone
Rclone is a command-line option for users who want a configurable mount across supported cloud remotes. It can mount a configured remote as a file system on Linux, FreeBSD, macOS, and Windows. Unlike a provider’s desktop client, it requires you to configure the remote and complete provider authorization; available features and file-system behavior differ by operating system and backend.

- Easily store and access 4TB of content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
- Install rclone using the instructions for your operating system, then configure a remote and authorize access to the cloud provider.
- Test that the remote can list or access the files you expect before mounting it.
- Mount the remote using the appropriate path format. The documented illustrative command for Linux or macOS is
rclone mount remote:path/to/files /path/to/local/mount. On Windows, use a drive letter such asX:; Windows network mode requires a drive letter. - Review the mount and backend documentation for your operating system before relying on it for important files or workflows.
See the rclone mount documentation for platform-specific options. For Google Drive, rclone says its shared client ID is being retired during 2026 and strongly recommends creating your own; authorization can use a browser or a manual flow. Follow the current rclone Google Drive setup guide. For OneDrive, consult the rclone OneDrive backend documentation.

Decide which files should be available offline
Streaming is useful when you want to browse a large cloud library without keeping every item on your computer. It does not guarantee access when you are offline: files you need without a connection must be downloaded or explicitly marked for offline use. Mirroring and “Always keep on this device” provide local copies, but use local storage. Choose based on the folders you need, available disk space, and how often you work without internet access.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- Plug-and-play expandability
- SuperSpeed USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps)
- For Google Drive streaming, mark selected files or folders “Available offline.”
- For OneDrive, select the desired files or folders and choose “Always keep on this device.”
- For mirrored Google Drive, My Drive is downloaded as a complete local copy and is offline by default.
Troubleshoot a cloud drive that does not appear or open
- The drive or folder is missing: Confirm the desktop app is installed, running, signed in to the intended account, and supported by your current OS.
- A file will not open offline: Check the internet connection or mark the file for offline use while online.
- Setup is blocked on a work device: Ask your administrator whether installing the client or granting required permissions is allowed.
- A move behaves unexpectedly: Confirm whether the action moves or copies the cloud item. On macOS Drive streaming with File Provider, Option-drag to make a copy rather than moving an item out of Drive.
- A Linux client or mount fails: Check the provider’s current distribution and file-system requirements, then consult the relevant rclone backend documentation if using rclone.
