The right option depends on whether the app is available there, supports your device, and relies on Google services. Android also applies source-specific installation permissions, and Google Play Protect may still warn about apps installed elsewhere.
Which option should you use?

For any route, confirm that the desired app is actually in the catalog and that it will work on your particular device. An app package can install successfully while some of its features or the service itself do not work.
Install an app from an alternative store
An alternative store or repository provides its own way to find and install apps. For F-Droid, use its official installation guide: it describes downloading the F-Droid APK and allowing the source handling that download to install apps. Verify that you are using F-Droid’s official domain rather than an unofficial copy or APK mirror.
Android requires permission for the installation source. On Android 8.0 and newer, you grant it separately to each source; older Android versions use a broader “Unknown sources” setting. The menu names and locations can vary by device. F-Droid recommends considering whether the browser or file manager should retain installation permission after setup. If you no longer need it, turn off that source’s permission in your device’s settings.

Before installing an app, check who publishes it and whether it is maintained and compatible with your Android version. Being listed in a repository does not by itself establish that an app is safe, actively maintained, or suitable for your device.
Install an APK from an app publisher
An APK is an Android app package. Some developers offer one directly from their official websites. Avoid treating a search result or an APK mirror as proof that a file came from the publisher: navigate to the developer’s verified site and check that it offers the app for your Android version and device.

- Download the APK from the app publisher’s official website.
- Open it from your device’s download or file interface.
- If Android asks, allow the app handling the file—such as your browser or file manager—to install apps from that source. On Android 8.0 and newer, this is a separate permission for that source.
- Review the installer information before proceeding. If you do not recognize the publisher or cannot verify the source, do not install the package.
- After installation, remove the source’s installation permission if you no longer need it.
There is no single Settings path that applies to every Android device. Manufacturers and Android releases may use different menu names and steps; look for the setting that allows the specific app you used to install unknown apps.
Understand Play Protect warnings
Google Play Protect can check apps installed from outside Google Play. Google says it may warn about apps that request sensitive permissions, apps it considers harmful, or apps built for older Android versions, and it may block some installations. Read the warning and verify the app and publisher through a trusted official source rather than dismissing it automatically or disabling protection.

A warning is a reason to investigate, not evidence by itself that a particular app is safe or unsafe. If you cannot establish where the package came from or why Android flagged it, do not proceed.
When an app installs but does not work
Installation confirms that Android accepted the package; it does not guarantee that the app’s online service or every feature will work. Apps can depend on Google Mobile Services, licensing checks, push notifications, location APIs, or store-specific billing. Check the app publisher’s compatibility information and support guidance for your device and installation source.

Amazon Fire tablets are a separate ecosystem
Fire tablets use Fire OS, which Amazon describes as a fork of Android. Amazon says Android apps will most likely run on Fire devices, but its developer FAQ states that Google Mobile Services do not work on Fire tablets. An app that depends on those services may therefore fail or lose features. A Fire tablet makes sense only when the apps you need are available through Amazon’s ecosystem and work without services the device does not provide. Availability of devices and apps can vary by country and model.

Android’s developer-verification policy is being introduced in stages. The official Android developer-verification documentation lists September 30, 2026 as the start of protections for installations from participating stores in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand, on certified devices running Android 7 or later. That date is not a universal change for every country, device, or installation route. Check the current official documentation for the rollout that applies to your location and device.

Check before choosing a route
- Availability: Is the app in the alternative store or publisher’s catalog for your region?
- Source: Can you verify the store or developer’s official domain and the app publisher?
- Compatibility: Does the app support your Android version and device, and does it depend on Google Mobile Services?
- Updates: How will the store or publisher deliver future versions?
- Permissions and warnings: Which installation source needs permission, and does Play Protect raise an alert you cannot resolve?
- Device and region: Is the app or device option available where you live?
