Understanding Digital Money and Digital Yield

Digital money includes more than crypto. Understand who owes you the funds, how stablecoins and CBDCs differ, and what may—or may not—generate yield.

Digital money is not just cryptocurrency: bank deposits and payment-app balances are digital too. What matters is who owes you the money, what rights you have to redeem it, and—if a product promises yield—where that return comes from. A digital format alone does not make money stable or create a return.

What counts as digital money?

“Digital money” is an umbrella term for value recorded and transferred electronically. It includes familiar bank-account balances and payment-app balances as well as blockchain-based instruments. The Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System noted in its 2022 paper Money and Payments: The U.S. Dollar in the Age of Digital Transformation that consumers and businesses have long held and transferred money digitally through bank accounts, online transactions, and payment apps.

The key distinction is not simply whether a balance is digital. It is who issued it and what legal claim the holder has. A balance may be a claim on a commercial bank, a private company, or—if one were issued—a central bank. Some digital assets, such as cryptocurrencies, are not a promise by an issuer to repay a fixed amount at all.

How the main forms differ

Form Issuer or underlying entity What the holder has What determines value or redemption
Bank-account balance Commercial bank A deposit claim against the bank Bank deposit terms and applicable protections
Payment-app balance Payment provider and, depending on the arrangement, a partner financial institution Rights defined by the service’s terms and account structure Those terms, including how funds are held and withdrawn
Stablecoin Private issuer or protocol, depending on design A token subject to its reserve, stabilization, and redemption arrangements Design, backing, market conditions, and access to redemption
Tokenized deposit Commercial bank A bank deposit liability represented in blockchain form Bank deposit terms; tokenization changes the format, not the identity of the bank debtor
Tokenized money market fund share Fund An investment-fund share represented digitally Fund assets, share terms, and redemption arrangements
Cryptocurrency Often no redeeming issuer A crypto-asset, not necessarily a claim for repayment Market demand and the asset’s design
Potential central bank digital currency (CBDC) Central bank If issued, a direct claim on that central bank Its design and the rules set for its use

This is a high-level map, not a guarantee that every product in a category has identical legal terms. In particular, payment-app arrangements can differ, and a tokenized fund share remains an investment interest rather than automatically becoming money available at par on demand.

What is a stablecoin?

A stablecoin is designed to hold value relative to a reference asset, such as a currency, commodity, or basket. The word describes the intended peg, not an unconditional promise that a token’s market price will never move or that every holder can redeem it immediately.

What to check about the design

  • Stabilization method: Some designs rely on reserves; others use mechanisms that seek to stabilize value without the same reserve structure. The SEC Division of Corporation Finance’s April 4, 2025 statement describes reserve-backed and algorithmic approaches and notes that risks vary with the method and reserve.
  • Backing and custody: Find out what assets support the arrangement, how they are held, and whether information about them is available.
  • Redemption rights: Check who is eligible to redeem, at what value, through which process, and whether access is restricted. A secondary-market price near a target is not the same thing as an enforceable right to redeem at that target.
  • Failure scenarios: Consider what could happen if reserves lose value, an issuer or intermediary cannot meet obligations, the stabilization mechanism fails, or redemption is delayed.

The SEC staff statement is narrow: its view that a category of stablecoins is not a securities offering covers certain U.S.-dollar-referenced tokens that are redeemable one-for-one, adequately reserve-backed, and meet the statement’s other conditions. It is a staff view, not a Commission rule or binding legal determination, and it should not be extended to every stablecoin or to yield-bearing arrangements.

What is a tokenized deposit, and how is it different from a stablecoin?

A tokenized deposit represents a commercial bank’s deposit liability in blockchain form. A stablecoin, by contrast, is a privately issued instrument whose reserve and redemption arrangements depend on its own design. The distinction is about the claim behind the token, not merely the technology used to transfer it.

A 2026 Federal Reserve Bank of New York staff report by Xuesong Huang and Todd Keister, Stablecoins vs. Tokenized Deposits: The Narrow Banking Debate Revisited (Staff Report 1179), models how the two arrangements can affect credit and welfare. Its results depend on assumptions about regulatory costs and banks’ incentives to shift risk. Treat it as a conditional model, not an empirical finding that one design always outperforms the other.

What is a CBDC?

A central bank digital currency would be a digital form of central-bank money and a direct liability of the central bank. That differs from a commercial-bank deposit, which the bank owes, or a private payment-app balance. A CBDC would not simply be another name for a stablecoin.

The Federal Reserve’s 2022 discussion paper considered a potential U.S. CBDC as a digital payment option and discussed possible benefits such as faster cross-border payments alongside questions about privacy, illicit finance, financial stability, and how a CBDC would complement existing payment methods. The paper explored issues; it did not endorse a policy outcome.

The Fed’s CBDC status page, last updated January 21, 2022, said the Federal Reserve had made no decision to pursue or implement a CBDC. That is what the dated page reported, not a live statement of U.S. policy in October 2026. Do not infer a current decision from that older status page.

Where does digital yield come from?

Yield is not an inherent feature of digital money. It may be interest paid under deposit-like product terms, returns generated by assets held in a fund, or rewards associated with protocol activity such as staking. In each case, the product or service—not its digital wrapper—determines the source, conditions, and risks of the return.

Examples of return sources

  • Deposit-like interest: The institution offering the account pays interest under its terms. Check whether the rate can change and what conditions, fees, or withdrawal limits apply.
  • Fund returns: A tokenized fund share reflects an interest in the fund. Any return depends on the underlying portfolio and the fund’s terms; tokenization itself does not produce extra income.
  • Staking-related rewards: Rewards may depend on protocol rules, validator or service arrangements, and other operating conditions. The SEC staff’s crypto-assets FAQ, last updated September 28, 2026, explains that a staking receipt token evidences ownership of the underlying asset; the receipt token itself does not create, guarantee, generate, or set the amount of rewards. That specific explanation should not be treated as a legal conclusion about every offer or as a description of every yield product.

How to evaluate a yield offer

Before treating a quoted rate as income you can count on, work through these questions in order:

  1. Who is issuing the instrument or offering the service? Identify the entity you would rely on and the legal claim, if any, you would hold.
  2. What funds the return? Look for the underlying activity or assets, rather than assuming the token itself generates value.
  3. What are your rights? Check how redemption works, who is eligible, whether withdrawals can be delayed, and what happens if the provider or a related intermediary fails.
  4. What could change or eliminate the return? Review variable-rate terms, protocol rules, performance dependencies, fees, and any promotional or conditional rate language.
  5. Can you access the funds when needed? Consider liquidity and operational dependencies, including the service, platform, or network required to transfer or redeem the asset.
  6. What could you lose? Consider price movements, counterparty or reserve problems, technical failures, and the possibility that the quoted yield stops or the principal loses value.

A high quoted rate by itself does not establish that a product is safe, liquid, or comparable with a bank deposit. The sources cited here do not provide current provider rates or endorse a particular product.
