If the title supports Xbox Cloud Gaming, you can play it without installing it, provided your subscription, region, device, controller and internet connection meet Xbox’s requirements.
Free Play Days is temporary. The games, participating plans, supported platforms, cloud availability and regional access change, so check the listing and the individual game page immediately before starting.

What Xbox Free Play Days includes
Free Play Days is a rotating Xbox promotion that lets eligible Game Pass members try selected games at no additional charge for a limited period. Xbox’s current Free Play Days listing describes the offer this way: “With Free Play Days, Game Pass Ultimate, Premium and Essential members can try critically acclaimed games for free for a limited time. Check back weekly for new games to try!”
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
That wording has three practical consequences:
- The catalog is temporary. A game can disappear when its promotional window closes.
- Access is tied to eligibility. You must be signed in to the account with an eligible plan, and Xbox can change which plans qualify.
- Availability is title-specific. A game may be offered on an Xbox console but not Windows PC, or may support cloud play only on selected devices and in selected regions.
Free Play Days access is not the same as permanently owning a game. When the offer ends, the Store may replace the free-play control with a purchase option. Check the end date and the terms shown on the game’s page rather than assuming that an installed copy will remain playable indefinitely.

Check these requirements before you start
A two-minute check prevents most failed downloads and “buy now” surprises.
- Microsoft/Xbox account: Sign in on the console, Xbox website or Xbox PC app with the account that holds the eligible Game Pass plan.
- Eligible plan: The current Free Play Days listing identifies Game Pass Ultimate, Premium and Essential members as eligible. Plan names, eligibility and regional terms can change, so use the listing and the game page as the final authority.
- Region: Xbox warns that titles and features vary by region. A promotion visible to one account or country may not appear for another.
- Target platform: Confirm whether the listing supports your Xbox console, Windows PC, cloud play or a combination. The platform label on the individual Store page controls.
- Storage for local installation: A console or PC install needs enough free space for the title and its updates. The Store page shows the game’s current download requirements.
- Cloud hardware: Streaming needs a supported device and, unless the game supports touch controls, a compatible controller connected by Bluetooth or USB.
- Internet for cloud play: Xbox’s FAQ specifies at least 10 Mbps download speed, with some devices requiring 20 Mbps for best quality, and recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi.
These checks describe different methods. Storage matters for a local install; network quality and controller input matter for cloud play. A fast connection does not make an unsupported title playable on a platform that the Store page does not list.
Find the current Free Play Days game
On Xbox.com
- Open Xbox’s official Free Play Days listing in a supported browser.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account linked to your eligible Game Pass plan.
- Review the games currently displayed and select the title you want.
- On the title’s Microsoft Store page, inspect the platform labels, promotion dates and available controls before choosing an installation or play method.
On an Xbox console
- Turn on the console and sign in to the eligible Xbox profile.
- From the Home screen, open the Game Pass area or follow the Free Play Days promotion shown there.
- Select a currently offered game to open its Store page.
- Read the supported-platform information and choose the control offered for your console.
Xbox’s getting-started guidance says that Game Pass is accessible from the console Home screen; after signing in with the subscription, you can begin downloading console games. If the promotion is not visible, open the Store directly and search for the title from the official listing, then verify that the same account is signed in.

Use this route when you want the game stored locally and the title page lists your console as supported.

- Sign in. Confirm that the console is using the Microsoft/Xbox account with the eligible Game Pass subscription. A different profile can make the game appear unavailable or paid.
- Open the promotion. Go to the console Home screen and enter the Game Pass area, or open the Free Play Days listing on Xbox.com and select the game.
- Open the Store page. Select the game’s tile so the full Microsoft Store listing appears. Do not rely only on a promotional thumbnail; the Store page contains the platform and access information that applies to your account.
- Confirm console support. Look for your Xbox console in the platform information. If only Windows PC or cloud is listed, the console cannot use the local-install option for that offer.
- Choose Install or Download. Select the installation control shown on the page. If the console asks where to install, choose the internal drive or a compatible expansion location with enough free space.
- Monitor the queue. Open the console’s downloads or queue view to check progress. Keep the console connected to the internet until the installation completes.
- Launch from My games & apps. After installation, start the game from the console library or the Store page while the promotion and your subscription eligibility remain active.
If the button says Buy rather than Install, first check the account, region, dates and platform label. The title may no longer be in the current promotion, or the selected profile may not qualify.
Install a Free Play Days game on Windows PC
PC access uses the Xbox PC app on Windows, and it is not automatic for every Free Play Days title. A game must be offered for PC in your region and under your plan.
- Install or open the Xbox PC app. Use the current Xbox app for Windows and sign in with the Microsoft account that has the eligible Game Pass subscription.
- Find the title. Browse the Free Play Days promotion in the app, or open the game’s Store listing from the official Free Play Days page.
- Check the platform label. Confirm that Windows PC is listed. A console-only promotion will not gain PC support merely because the game has a Windows version elsewhere.
- Check regional and plan eligibility. If the title page shows different availability for your location or account, those restrictions take precedence over the general promotion.
- Select Install. Choose the installation control in the Xbox PC app.
- Choose a drive and folder when prompted. Select a location with sufficient free storage, then allow the app to download the game and any required files.
- Start the game from the Xbox PC app. Keep the eligible account signed in while you play.
Xbox’s PC guidance states that PC games from the Game Pass library are played through the Xbox PC app: sign in with the subscription to begin downloading PC games. If the app offers only a purchase button, do not install from an unrelated listing; return to the official promotion and verify PC support, dates and account eligibility.
Play without downloading through Xbox Cloud Gaming
Cloud play is the no-install option, but it works only when the specific Free Play Days title is cloud playable in your supported region. The game runs on Xbox servers and streams video to your device, so local storage is not required.

Cloud requirements
- An active Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, Premium or Essential subscription, unless the game is one of the select free-to-play cloud titles that Xbox allows with a free Microsoft account in a supported region.
- A game that is marked as cloud playable on its Store or cloud listing.
- A supported device and a supported region.
- A compatible controller connected over Bluetooth or USB, except where the game specifically supports touch controls.
- A suitable internet connection. Xbox’s FAQ gives a 10 Mbps minimum download speed and notes that some devices may need 20 Mbps for best quality.
- Preferably a 5 GHz Wi-Fi connection for a more stable stream.
Start a cloud session
- Open Xbox Cloud Gaming on a supported device.
- Sign in with the account that meets the title’s subscription and regional requirements.
- Find the Free Play Days title and verify that a cloud-play control is displayed.
- Connect the compatible controller by Bluetooth or USB. If touch controls are available, follow the on-screen instructions instead.
- Start the game and wait for the stream to establish. Use a supported browser such as Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome or Safari when playing at xbox.com.
Cloud streaming requirements do not replace local-install requirements. A title can be downloadable on a console but unavailable for cloud play, or cloud playable on a supported device while not offered for Windows PC installation. Always use the title page’s platform and cloud labels.
Choose local installation or cloud play
| Factor | Local installation | Cloud play |
|---|---|---|
| Where it runs | Supported Xbox console or Windows PC listed on the Store page | Supported cloud device and region, only when the title is cloud playable |
| Download and storage | Requires a download and enough local storage | No game installation or local game storage required |
| Internet dependence | Internet is needed to download and may be needed for account checks, but the game files are local | Requires an ongoing connection; Xbox specifies 10 Mbps minimum and recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi |
| Input | Use the input devices supported by the console or PC version | Compatible Bluetooth or USB controller is required unless touch controls are supported |
| Platform availability | Can differ between console and Windows PC | Can differ from both local-install platforms; the cloud label is decisive |
| Best fit | Limited connectivity, adequate storage and a supported console or PC | Limited storage, a supported device and a reliable connection |
Choose local installation when you have the right platform and want to avoid streaming interruptions. Choose cloud play when you want to test a game immediately or lack enough storage, provided your device, controller, region and connection pass the checks.
What happens when the Free Play Days period ends
The promotion grants temporary access, not permanent ownership. When the offer expires, the game’s Store page may show a purchase option instead of Install or Play. The exact transition depends on the title and the current promotion terms.
If you are still inside the advertised window but lose access, check that:

- you are signed in with the same eligible account used to start the game;
- the subscription has not lapsed or changed to a plan that the current offer does not list;
- the game is still present on the current Free Play Days listing;
- your region and platform match the title page; and
- the console or Xbox PC app has refreshed its account and Store information.
Do not assume that an installed game remains playable after the deadline. The Store’s current entitlement and the promotion’s end time determine access.

The game is missing from the promotion
Free Play Days changes regularly. Open the official listing again, sign in, and check whether the title is still offered in your region. A game shown in an older article, video or screenshot may no longer be part of the current lineup.
The Store shows Buy instead of Install
Verify the signed-in profile and eligible plan first. Then check the promotion dates and the platform label. A purchase button can mean the offer ended, the title is not supported on the selected platform, or the account and region do not qualify.
The console can install it, but the PC app cannot
Console and Windows PC entitlements are not interchangeable for every promotion. Return to the game page and look specifically for Windows PC support. If PC is not listed, the console offer does not provide a PC installation.

Cloud Play is not available
Confirm that the title has a cloud-play label, your region supports the service, and your plan meets the cloud requirement. The general existence of a Free Play Days offer does not guarantee cloud access for that game.
The stream is blurry, delayed or disconnects
Run a connection check and compare the result with Xbox’s 10 Mbps minimum; some devices need 20 Mbps for best quality. Move to 5 GHz Wi-Fi when available, reduce competing network traffic, and keep the controller connected by Bluetooth or USB. If the connection remains unstable, install the game locally on a supported console or PC instead.
The controller is not detected
For cloud play, pair a compatible controller over Bluetooth or connect it by USB before starting the session. If the title supports touch controls, use the touch interface shown by the cloud player. A controller requirement applies to cloud streaming and does not by itself indicate a problem with a local console installation.

The download will not start
Check available storage, confirm that the correct profile is signed in, and reopen the Store page from the current promotion. If the title has left Free Play Days, the install control may disappear or become a purchase control. For PC, also confirm that the Xbox app is signed in to the same Microsoft account as the subscription.
A quick decision path
- Is the title on the current official Free Play Days listing? If not, the promotion is not currently available to start.
- Does your account have a plan listed as eligible? If not, the free-play entitlement will not apply.
- Which platform label is shown? Select console, Windows PC or cloud only when that exact option is listed.
- Do you have storage and a supported device? If yes, install locally; if not, continue only if cloud play is offered.
- Can your cloud setup meet the requirements? Check region, controller, browser or device and the 10 Mbps minimum before choosing streaming.
- Is the offer still within its time window? Recheck the Store page before downloading and again if access changes.
This sequence avoids the most common mistake: treating a general Free Play Days announcement as a universal license for every platform and device. The current listing and the individual Store page are the authoritative checks for your account.
