Yes—you can accept UPI payments without a payment gateway. Display a UPI ID or static QR code connected to the bank account that should receive the money. The customer scans the code or enters the ID in any supported UPI app, approves the payment, and you verify the credit in your own bank or UPI app.
This works well when a person can check each payment manually. It does not, by itself, provide website callbacks, automatic order matching, refunds, dispute handling, recurring billing or split settlement. Those requirements call for an acquiring bank or an authorised payment provider.

What “without a payment gateway” actually means
A payment gateway is an intermediary layer between your checkout and payment networks. It normally passes payment status back to your website or app and may add merchant onboarding, settlement reports, refunds and dispute workflows. Accepting UPI directly removes that intermediary from the payment initiation step.

You then confirm the result from the receiving account or an authorised merchant dashboard. A screenshot, SMS forwarded by the customer or a browser redirect is not proof that the money arrived.

NPCI’s merchant FAQ lists QR, Intent, application-based and Collect modes for UPI integration. Its BHIM documentation also describes generating, downloading and sharing a QR code. The practical choice depends on whether you collect payments face to face, send invoices remotely or run an automated checkout.
Four ways to collect UPI money directly
1. Static QR code
A static QR contains your receiving UPI details and normally does not lock an amount. Generate it in BHIM, your bank’s UPI app or through an acquiring bank, then print it or place it on a screen. The customer scans it, checks your displayed payee name, enters the amount and confirms.
This is the simplest option for shops, market stalls, tutors, clinics, freelancers, delivery desks and event counters. One code can be reused for many transactions, but you must connect each incoming credit to an invoice or order yourself.

2. UPI ID (VPA) on an invoice or message
Put your UPI ID and the exact payee name on an invoice, email, chat message or social profile. The customer enters the ID in a UPI app and sends the amount. This is useful for remote service work when a QR cannot be scanned.
Because the customer chooses the amount and reference, manual reconciliation is essential. Ask the payer to include an invoice or order number in the note when their app permits it, but still verify the bank credit independently.

3. Dynamic QR or authorised UPI integration
A dynamic QR is created for a particular order, amount or transaction reference. An acquiring bank or authorised UPI provider can supply the merchant onboarding and technical interface. NPCI’s 2026 guidance describes a merchant payment choice using either a dynamic UPI QR or a UPI ID and requires a visible “Pay by any UPI app” option.
Dynamic QR reduces amount-entry errors and can carry an order reference, but it is not automatically a complete gateway. Confirm which status notifications, reconciliation reports, refund tools and support obligations are included in the written merchant agreement.

A upi:// link or an app-specific intent can open a customer’s UPI application with payee information prefilled. It may be placed behind a button on a website or sent in a message. That link only initiates payment; it does not guarantee a payment callback, order matching, refund workflow, dispute process or settlement for multiple sellers.
Deep-link behaviour can differ between banks, operating systems and UPI apps. Test the exact link with the apps and banks your customers use before publishing it, and provide a QR or UPI-ID fallback.
Direct collection compared with gateway-backed checkout
| Option | Setup effort | Order and amount matching | How you confirm payment | Automation and operations | Typical fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Static QR | Low; create and display one code | Manual; customer usually enters the amount | Check the receiving bank or UPI app | No built-in callbacks or automated reconciliation | Counter sales and small, human-supervised collections |
| UPI ID on an invoice | Low; publish the ID and payee name | Manual; rely on amount and reference supplied by the payer | Check the account credit and transaction reference | Manual reports unless your bank supplies tools | Freelancers, services and remote invoices |
| Dynamic QR or authorised integration | Medium to high; merchant onboarding and technical work | Can bind an order, amount and reference | Merchant dashboard, bank report or an agreed status mechanism | Depends on the acquiring bank or provider; may support automated reconciliation | Online stores and higher-volume businesses |
| Gateway-backed checkout | Highest; account approval, integration and compliance work | Designed for automatic order association | Callbacks, dashboard and bank settlement reports | Often includes hosted checkout, refunds, disputes, recurring or split settlement, subject to the contract | Businesses that cannot verify every payment manually |
Customer reach is broadest when the flow clearly supports payment from any UPI app. Do not label a simple deep link as a gateway or promise features that your bank or provider has not included.

How to set up a static UPI QR
- Select the receiving account. Use the bank account and UPI handle intended for the activity. Ask the bank whether it requires merchant onboarding, a business account or a current account for your category.
- Generate the code. Use BHIM, your bank’s UPI app or an acquiring bank. Choose the merchant or account option that creates a QR for receiving money, not a code intended only for personal transfers if your bank requires a formal merchant profile.
- Check the identity. Scan the code from a second phone and confirm that the exact payee name shown in the payer’s app matches your business or receiving account. Correct any spelling or account mismatch before printing.
- Decide whether to lock an amount. A reusable static code normally leaves the amount blank for the payer. For a fixed-price service, an amount-specific or dynamic code can reduce entry mistakes.
- Display it securely. Print a durable copy, place it where customers can scan it without obstruction and show the payee name next to it. Inspect the display regularly so a sticker cannot be placed over the original code without detection.
- Give payment instructions. Tell the customer to scan, verify your payee name and amount, and approve in their own UPI app. Never ask the customer for a UPI PIN; the PIN authorises the payer’s transaction.
- Verify the result yourself. Open the receiving bank or merchant app and check the credited amount, status, time and transaction reference. Do not release goods or mark an order paid from a screenshot alone.
- Record the transaction. Match the credit to the order, invoice or customer name. Keep a simple ledger or export the bank statement so that unsettled, duplicate and refunded entries can be investigated.
- Publish a fallback. Keep the UPI ID and a contact method available if the code will not scan. Define who handles wrong amounts, duplicate payments and refund requests.
Using a UPI ID for invoices and remote work
Write the UPI ID in plain text, followed by the exact payee name and the amount due. A customer can copy the ID into a UPI app even when a QR image is unavailable. Send one invoice per job and use a unique invoice number in your own records.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAfter the customer says that payment is complete, look for the corresponding credit in the receiving account. Compare the amount, date, payer reference and any note. A customer may pay from a different bank account or UPI app than expected, so use the transaction reference and amount rather than an informal name match alone.
If several people pay the same amount, do not mark an invoice settled until the reference and timing identify the correct credit. For regular billing, ask your bank or authorised provider whether it offers collection requests, transaction reports or merchant reconciliation; these features are separate from merely publishing a UPI ID.
Putting UPI on a website
For a small, human-verified checkout
You can show a static QR image and UPI ID on an order-confirmation or payment-instructions page. Include the payee name, the amount due and an order number, then tell the customer that the order will be processed after the credit appears in your account.
This model works only when someone can review incoming payments. A customer returning to a “success” page, or a browser opening a UPI app, does not prove that the bank accepted the payment. Keep the order pending until your own account or authorised merchant report confirms it.

For automated checkout
Ask an acquiring bank or authorised UPI provider about merchant onboarding and dynamic QR, Intent, application-based or Collect integration. Request documentation for status callbacks, signature verification, retry handling, refunds, settlement timing and reconciliation. Build your order system to accept a payment only after the documented success status is verified.
If your checkout serves more than one seller, needs split settlement, or must handle many simultaneous orders, a bare QR will create operational work even when every individual payment succeeds.
How to verify a UPI payment safely
- Use the receiving side. Confirm the credit in the bank account or merchant dashboard that is supposed to receive the money.
- Check status, not just a message. A pending, failed or reversed transaction must not be treated as successful.
- Match key fields. Compare amount, transaction reference, date and order or invoice number. Record the result before dispatching goods or delivering a service.
- Protect credentials. You never need a customer’s UPI PIN, one-time password or screen-sharing session to receive money.
- Keep evidence. Retain the bank reference and your order record according to your accounting and tax-retention practice.
What to do when something goes wrong
The QR will not scan
Show a fresh, high-resolution copy with good contrast and no glare. Ask the customer to use the scanner inside their UPI app rather than a camera that cannot interpret payment QR data. Provide the UPI ID as a text fallback and check that the displayed code has not been covered or altered.
The payee name is wrong
Stop the payment and regenerate the QR from the correct bank account or merchant profile. Do not tell the customer to proceed on the assumption that the money will be redirected. Recheck the name from a second phone before displaying the replacement.
The customer sees “pending”
Do not collect a second payment immediately. Check your receiving account and the transaction status, note the reference and follow the bank or UPI app’s instructions for a pending transaction. Release the order only when the credit is confirmed.

The customer shows “successful,” but you cannot see the credit
Ask for the transaction reference and exact amount, then search the receiving account using the bank’s available statement or notification tools. Verify that the customer paid the displayed payee and not a look-alike ID. If the status remains unresolved, contact the bank or authorised provider with the reference rather than accepting a screenshot as settlement.
The wrong amount or a duplicate was paid
Record both transactions, keep the order status clear and agree on a refund route. Never send money to a new UPI ID supplied in an unsolicited message without independently confirming the customer and the original transaction. Your bank or authorised provider can explain the supported refund process.
Do you need a current account or merchant account?
There is no single UPI rule that gives every business the same account requirement. Your bank, merchant category, account type, transaction pattern and applicable onboarding rules determine whether a personal account is acceptable or whether a business/current account and merchant agreement are required.
Before printing a QR for commercial use, ask the bank in writing about eligibility, transaction limits, statements, tax documentation, chargebacks or disputes, and the account into which funds settle. NPCI describes merchant receipts as going to the merchant pool or merchant bank account according to the applicable agreement, so the agreement matters more than a generic promise that every account works identically.
Fees, limits and settlement timing
Do not advertise one universal UPI fee or limit. Charges and limits can vary by bank, merchant category, account type, transaction mode and rules in force at the time. Ask the acquiring bank or authorised provider for its current schedule, including any onboarding, device, reporting, refund or settlement charges.
NPCI’s merchant FAQ says the merchant receives money immediately after the customer confirms payment into the merchant pool or merchant bank account according to the agreement. In practice, confirm what “immediately” means for your account, whether a transaction can be reversed or held for review, and when a statement entry becomes available.
When a payment gateway becomes worth it
Direct QR or UPI-ID collection is sensible when a person can inspect each payment and the number of daily orders is manageable. Move to an acquiring bank or authorised gateway-style service when manual checking becomes a bottleneck or a financial risk.

RBI describes payment gateways and payment aggregators as intermediary activities involving responsibilities such as merchant onboarding, settlement and grievance handling. A printed QR or bare UPI link does not supply those controls, so compare the operational requirements—not just the payment button—when deciding.
Quick Recap
A practical decision checklist
- Choose a static QR when sales happen face to face and a staff member can verify every credit.
- Choose a UPI ID when you send occasional invoices or provide services remotely.
- Ask for dynamic QR or authorised integration when each online order needs its own amount and reference.
- Use a full gateway-backed flow when you need callbacks, automated reconciliation, refunds, disputes, recurring billing or split settlement.
- In every case, display the correct payee name, verify the receiving account and never request a payer’s UPI PIN.
