To let an AI agent buy from your store with Stripe, expose an agent-ready checkout or payment endpoint and use Link as the customer-approval layer. The agent asks for permission to spend; the customer approves in Link; Stripe then issues a transaction-scoped, one-time card or Shared Payment Token (SPT). The agent can complete the authorized purchase without receiving the customer’s underlying card credentials.
What Stripe Link changes for AI-agent checkout
Traditional checkout assumes a person enters payment details or clicks a hosted payment page. Agentic checkout adds a software buyer that can discover an item, ask a human for permission, submit the order and monitor fulfillment. Stripe describes Link’s wallet for agents as “a machine-native way to let agents make purchases on behalf of a human without sharing the underlying payment credentials.”
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
There are three separate systems in this flow:
- Your merchant system: catalog, prices, availability, shipping, tax, order creation, fulfillment, refunds and customer support.
- The AI agent: discovers your offer, requests a purchase, submits the approved transaction and reads order-status updates.
- Stripe Link: presents the human approval step and creates a narrowly scoped payment instrument for the approved transaction.
The agent should not receive a reusable card number. Depending on the Stripe surface and rollout available to your account, Stripe creates a one-time-use card or an SPT that is restricted to the approved transaction. Your endpoint still decides whether the order is valid, available and fulfillable.
Stripe’s October 7, 2025 announcement called Link “a wallet purpose-built for agentic commerce,” with controls such as spending limits and explicit permissions for agents.

Requirements before you build
Agent payments are not enabled merely by placing a Payment Link on a page. Prepare the merchant and the machine-facing interface first.
- A Stripe merchant account in an eligible region and business category. Agentic-commerce capabilities, API names and availability can change, so confirm current eligibility in Stripe’s documentation and dashboard.
- A complete product source of truth. Store canonical product identifiers, prices, currency, inventory, variants, shipping rules, tax treatment, refund policy and expected fulfillment time.
- An agent-readable checkout surface. Stripe describes agent-facing discovery and checkout surfaces, including Stripe Directory for business endpoints and Stripe Projects for structured products and programmatic provisioning. Use the surface currently documented for your account rather than copying an older preview integration.
- A server-side order service. The server must recheck price, inventory, tax, shipping address and customer eligibility when the agent submits an order. Never trust values supplied only by the agent.
- Stripe event and webhook handling. Payment confirmation, asynchronous payment changes, cancellations, refunds and disputes must update one internal order record.
- Controls for automated traffic. Add authentication, rate limits, replay protection, idempotency, fraud screening and audit logging before production access.
Implementation sequence
1. Make your catalog and policies machine-readable
Agents need the same facts a human sees, but in an unambiguous format. For every sellable item, expose:
- Stable product and variant identifiers.
- Currency, unit price, billing interval when applicable and whether the price is recurring.
- Current stock or capacity, including reservation rules.
- Shipping destinations, delivery methods and charges.
- Tax behavior and any location restrictions.
- Cancellation, return and refund conditions.
- Fulfillment state transitions and a support contact or status channel.
Return explicit availability and error states instead of allowing an agent to infer them from marketing text. If a price or inventory quantity can change during checkout, mark the quote with an expiration time and require the agent to confirm it again at order creation.
2. Expose an agent-ready checkout endpoint
Create a server endpoint that can be called by an authorized agent or by the Stripe agentic-commerce surface you adopt. It should let the agent:
- Identify the product, quantity, selected options and delivery destination.
- Receive a calculated total with currency, tax, shipping and any discounts shown separately.
- See the merchant, fulfillment estimate, refund terms and an order summary suitable for human approval.
- Submit the approved purchase without sending raw card credentials to your servers or the agent.
Keep the endpoint deterministic: the same request should return the same quote until its expiry, or clearly state why a recalculation occurred. Bind every quote to a merchant account, currency and product version so an agent cannot reuse a quote against a different seller or item.

3. Present a clear Link approval request
When the agent is ready to spend, pass the transaction details through the documented Link agent-wallet flow. The customer should be able to see who is being paid, what is being purchased, the maximum amount, currency and any relevant shipping or recurring terms before approving.
Approval is the authorization boundary. Do not treat an agent’s request, a browser redirect or a previously approved order as proof that payment is authorized. Require a new approval if the seller, amount, currency, product, destination or permitted time window changes materially.
4. Use the resulting one-time card or SPT only in scope
After approval, Stripe supplies the payment instrument intended for the transaction. Your integration should use it only for the authorized merchant, amount and time window. Store a reference to the transaction and authorization result, not a reusable card number.
Do not design a wallet or database that attempts to retain the one-time credential for later orders. If an order must be split, partially captured or changed, verify that the current Stripe flow permits that operation; otherwise obtain a new approval for the revised amount.
5. Confirm payment and order state with webhooks
A browser response is not a reliable payment record. Treat Stripe’s server-to-server events as the source for payment state and reconcile them with your order system using an idempotent event handler.

Keep payment state and fulfillment state separate. A successful payment does not mean an item has shipped, and a refund does not erase the original order record.

6. Add automated-traffic and fraud controls
Agents can retry quickly and at scale, so apply controls that are stricter than those used for a single human browser session:
- Authenticate every agent request and authorize it for the specific merchant account and operation.
- Use idempotency keys for quote creation, order creation and payment attempts.
- Expire quotes and reject replayed approval artifacts.
- Rate-limit discovery, quoting and order endpoints independently.
- Detect unusual velocity, repeated declines, mismatched locations and attempts to alter an approved amount.
- Log the agent identity, human approver, seller, amount, currency, timestamps, order ID and webhook history.
- Route high-risk or ambiguous orders to manual review instead of silently changing the order.
Permission and credential scope
Document the limits your integration enforces. Link’s wallet protects the underlying payment credentials, but your merchant endpoint must still prevent an approved transaction from being broadened.
| Control | What to enforce | Failure to prevent |
|---|---|---|
| Seller scope | Bind the authorization to your specific Stripe merchant and the order created for that seller. | An agent redirects an approval to a different merchant or account. |
| Amount scope | Compare the final amount, currency, tax and shipping total with the approved maximum before payment. | An item, quantity or fee is increased after approval. |
| Time scope | Expire quotes and authorization attempts after the documented validity window. | A stale approval is replayed days later. |
| Purpose scope | Associate the payment with a product, order and fulfillment destination. | A credential approved for one purchase is reused for another. |
| Credential exposure | Pass only the one-time card or SPT required by the current Stripe flow; never expose the customer’s underlying payment credentials. | An agent or integration stores a reusable card number. |
| Human approval | Show a clear summary and require the customer’s explicit Link approval. | An agent treats an unapproved spend request as authorization. |
Stripe Link versus Stripe Payment Links
These products solve different parts of checkout. Stripe defines a Payment Link as “a shareable URL that will take your customers to a hosted payment page.” A Payment Link can be shared and used multiple times; each visit creates a checkout session. Checkout Sessions support one-time purchases and subscriptions through Checkout or Payment Links.
| Decision point | Hosted Payment Link | Agentic-commerce flow with Link wallet |
|---|---|---|
| Primary buyer | Person opening a hosted page. | AI agent acting for a person. |
| Discovery | URL shared in a message, page or campaign. | Machine-readable catalog or an agent-facing directory or endpoint. |
| Checkout surface | Stripe-hosted payment page. | Structured agent checkout plus a Link approval request. |
| Approval granularity | The customer approves the hosted session. | The customer approves the agent’s specific spend request. |
| Credential exposure | Handled by the hosted page; it does not by itself create an agent-scoped credential. | Stripe supplies a one-time card or SPT so the agent does not receive underlying payment credentials. |
| Seller, amount and time scope | Determined by the Payment Link and session configuration. | Must be checked against the approved agent transaction at order time. |
| Automation | Suitable for a human completing checkout. | Designed for programmatic request, approval, payment and status handling. |
| Post-purchase integration | Use Checkout and Stripe events as with other Stripe payments. | Also return order, fulfillment, refund and failure states to the agent. |
Use a Payment Link when you simply need a hosted page for a person. Use the agentic-commerce path when software must request authorization, complete a scoped purchase and report the result programmatically. Putting a Payment Link URL in an agent prompt does not create Link’s wallet authorization or one-time credential behavior.

Design the endpoint around the full order lifecycle
Discovery and product selection
Expose searchable names, descriptions, variants, constraints and availability. Avoid returning only a rendered webpage. An agent needs to know whether an item is in stock, which destinations are supported and what information is required before it can request approval.
Quote and approval
Return a human-readable summary as well as structured fields. Include the merchant name, item lines, quantities, subtotal, shipping, tax, total, currency, delivery estimate, refund terms and quote expiry. If the purchase is recurring, state the interval and cancellation terms prominently; do not assume a one-time approval covers future charges unless the current Stripe product explicitly supports that authorization.
Order creation
Recalculate the total server-side, reserve inventory according to your policy and create exactly one internal order for the approved transaction. If inventory, tax or shipping changes, stop and request fresh approval rather than silently charging a different amount.
Fulfillment, refunds and support
Return tracking, provisioning or delivery status through the same machine-facing channel. Make refund eligibility and processing status queryable. A customer should be able to identify the human-approved order when contacting support, even if the initial request came from an autonomous agent.
Failure modes and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Corrective action |
|---|---|---|
| The agent can open a payment page but cannot complete an approved purchase. | A Payment Link was used without an agent-wallet integration. | Implement the documented agentic-commerce checkout and Link approval flow. |
| The final charge is higher than the approval. | Shipping, tax, quantity or currency was recalculated after approval. | Compare the final total with the approved scope and obtain new approval when it differs. |
| An order appears paid twice. | Retries created duplicate orders or webhook deliveries were processed twice. | Use idempotency keys, unique order constraints and duplicate-event handling. |
| Payment succeeded but fulfillment did not start. | Webhook processing failed or payment and fulfillment states were conflated. | Inspect webhook delivery, replay safely and keep separate state machines. |
| An expired request is accepted. | Quote or approval expiry was not enforced server-side. | Validate timestamps and authorization references before creating the order. |
| Automated traffic produces repeated declines. | No velocity, replay or risk controls. | Rate-limit, fingerprint agent requests, review risk signals and require human escalation for suspicious activity. |
Test before production
- Run a successful one-time purchase from discovery through fulfillment status.
- Test approval denial and confirm that no order or charge is created.
- Change the amount, currency, seller or shipping destination after approval and verify that the request is rejected.
- Replay the same order request and webhook event; confirm that only one order exists.
- Let a quote expire and verify that the endpoint requires a new quote and approval.
- Simulate payment failure, delayed confirmation, refund and dispute states.
- Confirm that logs contain transaction references but never underlying card credentials.
- Test rate limits, malformed input, unauthorized agents and signature verification failures.
- Verify that the agent receives useful, machine-readable error states and that a human can still find the order in your support tools.
Availability and versioning considerations
Stripe’s agentic-commerce surfaces are evolving. Exact API names, account eligibility, regional availability, supported currencies, rollout status and the distinction between a one-time card and an SPT should be checked against the current Stripe documentation before you commit to an interface.
Best Value
Version your machine-facing contract independently of your website. Record which Stripe capability and API version created each authorization, and design a migration path for changes to discovery, approval or webhook schemas. Do not promise customers that every AI agent can use your endpoint until you have tested the relevant agent platform and region.
Practical decision
If your goal is a conventional hosted checkout, publish a Stripe Payment Link and handle the resulting Checkout session and events. If an AI system must select products, ask a person for permission, pay without seeing the person’s card details and report fulfillment, build the agent-ready checkout around Link’s wallet flow. The merchant remains responsible for pricing, inventory, tax, fulfillment, refunds, fraud controls and the customer relationship; Link supplies the approval and scoped payment layer.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an AI agent see my full card number when it pays with Link?
The Link agent-wallet design is intended to keep the underlying payment credentials from the agent. Stripe supplies a one-time card or Shared Payment Token for the approved transaction instead of a reusable card number.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Is a Stripe Payment Link enough for an AI agent purchase?
No. A Payment Link is a shareable hosted-checkout URL. It does not, by itself, provide the agent-specific approval, seller and amount scoping or one-time credential behavior of Link’s agent-wallet flow.
What happens if the agent changes the order after I approve it?
Your server should compare the final seller, amount, currency, items and destination with the approved scope. A material change should stop the transaction and require a new approval.
Can the same one-time payment credential be saved for later orders?
It should not be treated as reusable. Keep a transaction reference and request a new authorization for a separate purchase unless Stripe’s current documentation explicitly supports another operation.
Who handles refunds and delivery after the agent pays?
The merchant does. Your order system must process fulfillment, cancellations and refunds, then expose those states to the agent through its machine-facing endpoint.
