It can calculate direct light, bounced color, reflections, refraction, shadows and contact shading together. The biggest visible gains are usually indoors, on wet or reflective materials, and wherever colored light bounces between surfaces. The cost is substantial GPU load: current path-tracing guidance assumes upscaling and, where available, frame generation, while ordinary non-ray-traced presets are measured at native resolution.
What path tracing means in The Witcher 3
Traditional rasterization draws geometry into the image and uses specialized approximations for shadows, reflections and indirect light. The 2022 next-generation update added selected ray-traced effects to that rasterized foundation. Path tracing takes a different approach: it treats lighting as one transport problem and follows many rays as they leave the camera or light sources, hit surfaces, bounce, and eventually contribute to a pixel.

NVIDIA described the Remastered mode in 2026 as a renderer that “unifies all aspects of lighting and rendering into one system, rather than using a mix of ray-traced and rasterized effects.” More rays and multiple bounces allow a ray to carry the color of the surface it strikes into the next interaction. A red wall can tint nearby stone; candlelight can spread through a room; and a reflection can include light that has already bounced elsewhere.
This is the important distinction from the phrase “ray tracing.” Ray tracing can be applied to one feature, such as reflections or shadows, while the rest of the frame remains rasterized. Path tracing applies the same ray-based transport to the scene’s lighting as a whole. NVIDIA’s concise comparison is: “Ray tracing focuses on improving certain aspects of a scene, be that its reflections or shadows, while path tracing improves everything.”

Path tracing is a lighting method, not an upscaler
Path tracing creates the underlying light transport. DLSS, FSR and XeSS reduce the number of pixels rendered directly and reconstruct a higher-resolution image. Ray Reconstruction and frame generation serve related reconstruction or acceleration roles; they do not create the bounced light themselves. Keeping those functions separate helps when comparing image quality or diagnosing performance.
How the 2022 next-generation renderer differs
The 2022 update used a hybrid DirectX 11/DirectX 12 renderer and exposed four separate ray-traced effects. On PC, ray-traced reflections and ray-traced shadows could be enabled independently. Console Ray Tracing Mode supplied ray-traced global illumination and ambient occlusion. Xbox Series S had no ray-tracing features in that release.
| 2022 ray-traced effect | What it changes | How path tracing relates |
|---|---|---|
| Global illumination | Models bounced sunlight and colored light that reaches areas a direct source does not illuminate. | Uses the same multi-bounce transport as the rest of the path-traced lighting solution instead of operating as a separate effect. |
| Ambient occlusion | Adds small-scale darkening in creases and where objects touch, such as page edges, pebbles and contact points. | Contact shading is produced as part of the unified light calculation rather than as an isolated screen-space pass. |
| Ray-traced shadows | Refines sun and moon shadows, including softer transitions and more accurate contact behavior. | Shadow transport is integrated with direct and indirect light. |
| Ray-traced reflections | Improves reflections on water, puddles, floors and metal armor beyond screen-space reflection limits. | Reflections can include lighting from outside the visible screen and multiple light bounces. |
That separation explains why the older mode can improve one visual category while leaving another unchanged. Path tracing instead changes the relationships among categories: a shadow, a reflection and indirect room light can all respond to the same source and bounce history.

Which lighting effects path tracing changes
Indirect and global illumination
Direct light travels from a source to a surface. Indirect light arrives after one or more bounces. Path tracing captures more of those bounces, so sunlight entering through a window can illuminate a wall, tint the floor, and then contribute to nearby objects. Colored surfaces therefore influence their surroundings instead of appearing lit only by the original white source.
The effect is most apparent in enclosed spaces, under awnings, in alleys and anywhere direct sunlight is blocked. A bright outdoor scene dominated by one unobstructed sun can look closer to the rasterized version because there is less visible indirect light to reveal.
Ambient occlusion and contact shading
Ambient occlusion is the small-scale component that makes two touching surfaces look grounded rather than pasted together. In The Witcher 3, this includes darkening around object contacts, in creases, between stones and along page edges. A path-traced solution can account for the actual surrounding geometry and light transport rather than darkening only pixels that happen to be near each other on screen.
Look at cluttered interiors, stacked objects, foliage near the ground or a character’s equipment touching clothing. The improvement is subtle at a distance but helps explain why objects retain believable separation at close range.

The 2022 ray-traced shadow option refined sun and moon shadows with more detailed transitions. Path tracing folds that shadow transport into the same system that handles bounced light. Shadow edges can harden near a blocker and soften with distance, while indirect illumination can keep a shaded area from becoming unnaturally black.
Shadow quality still depends on the scene, light size and reconstruction settings. A path-traced frame is not guaranteed to make every distant shadow visibly sharper; its advantage is consistency between the shadow and the light that surrounds it.

Reflections on water, puddles, floors and armor
Screen-space reflections can show only objects that are already visible in the current image. They may miss a tower above the camera, a character just outside the frame or geometry hidden behind another object. Ray-traced reflections remove that visibility restriction by querying scene geometry directly. NVIDIA noted in 2022 that ray-traced reflections primarily enhanced large bodies of water and puddles that had previously relied on screen-space reflections.
Path tracing extends the same idea while also accounting for bounced light. Wet cobblestones can reflect a colored sign and the light that sign casts; polished armor can show a more complete environment; and a puddle can combine reflection with refraction and surface lighting instead of behaving like a flat mirror.

Small sources are where unified transport can be especially revealing. Candle and torch light can bounce through an interior, color nearby walls and contribute to objects around corners. Special effects that emit light can interact with the room instead of appearing as bright points surrounded by largely unchanged surfaces.
These changes are scene-dependent. An interior with several warm sources and dark materials offers more opportunities for visible bounce than a sunlit field.
Water refraction and multi-bounce transport
Refraction describes how light bends as it passes through water or another transparent medium. Path tracing can calculate that interaction together with reflection and additional bounces, giving water and wet surfaces more physically consistent behavior. The result is not simply a brighter reflection: light can enter, bend, reflect, and illuminate another surface before reaching the camera.
Rasterization, 2022 ray tracing and path tracing compared
| Comparison axis | Rasterized rendering | 2022 hybrid ray tracing | Remastered path tracing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lighting consistency | Separate approximations for direct light, shadows, reflections and ambient effects. | Rasterization plus selected ray-traced passes. | One lighting and rendering system with more rays and multiple bounces. |
| Coverage | Uses conventional approximations; no unified ray-based transport. | Global illumination, ambient occlusion, shadows and reflections can be selected as distinct features. | Direct, indirect and reflected light, shadow transport, contact shading and refraction interact in one solution. |
| Indoor visibility | Indirect light and emissive bounce are approximated. | Global illumination improves bounced light where enabled. | Multiple bounces make colored interior lighting and small sources more coherent. |
| Reflections | Screen-space or other approximations with visibility limits. | Ray-traced reflections improve water, puddles, floors and armor. | More complete reflections can include off-screen geometry and bounced illumination. |
| Image stability | Usually inexpensive and comparatively straightforward to resolve. | Ray-traced passes require denoising and reconstruction. | More samples and transport complexity increase the importance of denoising, upscaling and reconstruction. |
| GPU cost | Lowest of the three approaches for a comparable resolution and settings. | Higher, depending on which effects are enabled. | Highest; official path-tracing measurements assume automatic upscaling and frame generation. |
| Availability | Broadest hardware and platform coverage. | PC options plus console Ray Tracing Mode; Xbox Series S had no ray tracing in the 2022 release. | Available through the Remastered PC DirectX 12 renderer; console context remains the separate Ray Tracing Mode. |
What hardware and settings are required
The Remastered path-tracing renderer is DirectX 12-only. CD PROJEKT RED’s current support guidance separates RT Minimum, RT Recommended and Path-Tracing configurations. It also states that path-tracing results were measured with automatic DLSS, FSR or XeSS upscaling and frame generation, while non-ray-traced presets use native resolution. Resolution, scene complexity and the rest of the graphics settings materially change frame rate, so a single universal FPS number would be misleading.

NVIDIA has published Ultra+ path-traced examples for RTX 5090-, RTX 5080- and RTX 5070-class graphics cards when DLSS 4.5, Ray Reconstruction and frame generation are enabled. Those are vendor figures rather than independent testing. They demonstrate the class of hardware used for the feature, not a guarantee for every board, resolution or scene. A GeForce RTX 5080-class card is therefore a relevant reference point when planning a path-tracing build, but the exact model, cooling, CPU, resolution and upscaling mode still matter.
Older NVIDIA figures provide useful context rather than a promise for every configuration: DLSS 3 increased performance by up to 2.3× in NVIDIA’s 2022 testing, and NVIDIA Reflex reduced system latency by up to 43% in that same material. Neither figure measures the lighting algorithm itself.

- Use the Remastered PC installation. Path tracing belongs to the DirectX 12 renderer, not the older DirectX 11 path.
- Open the game’s graphics options and select the DirectX 12 renderer. The available ray-tracing and path-tracing controls depend on the current patch and hardware.
- Enable Path Tracing, then choose an upscaling mode. DLSS, FSR or XeSS can change both performance and image reconstruction; record which one you use before comparing screenshots.
- Test frame generation separately from the lighting. Frame generation can raise displayed FPS without reducing the time required to calculate each traditionally rendered frame.
- Compare the same location and camera angle. Use an interior with candles, a wet street, reflective armor and a bright outdoor scene. These expose different parts of the renderer.
- Check motion, not only still images. Denoising and reconstruction can look stable in a screenshot yet show trails, shimmer or softness while the camera moves.
For a fair comparison, keep resolution, field of view, texture quality and post-processing unchanged. Toggle only the lighting mode, then make a second comparison with upscaling and frame generation changed so you can distinguish a lighting improvement from a reconstruction improvement.

Is path tracing worth using?
Choose it for visual consistency
Path tracing is most convincing when you spend time in interiors, near wet surfaces, around reflective materials or under colored light. It can make a room feel connected because the candle that brightens one wall also influences the floor, objects and nearby shadows.
Stay with rasterization for maximum native-resolution performance
If your priority is the highest native-resolution frame rate, rasterized rendering remains the least demanding choice. It also avoids the reconstruction and denoising compromises associated with very low internal resolutions.
Use the 2022 ray-traced options as a middle ground
The separate ray-traced effects let you target a specific improvement. Reflections or shadows can be enabled without paying for the full multi-bounce path-traced solution, although the result is less unified.
Consider your display and play style
On a high-refresh display, the performance cost may outweigh subtle lighting improvements. On a slower display or for cinematic exploration, the extra bounce and reflection detail may be easier to appreciate. There is no universal “worth it” setting because the trade-off changes with resolution, GPU headroom and the scenes you play most.
Common problems and practical fixes
Frame rate collapses after enabling path tracing
First verify that upscaling is active and note its preset. Then lower output resolution or reconstruction quality before disabling every lighting feature. Path-tracing support guidance assumes automatic upscaling and frame generation, so testing it at native resolution is not equivalent to the published path-tracing configurations.
The image looks soft or shows trails
Compare a moving scene with and without frame generation, then test a higher upscaling quality mode. This isolates reconstruction artifacts from the lighting calculation. A screenshot alone cannot establish whether the softness comes from path tracing, denoising or the selected upscaler.
Reflections still look wrong
Check whether the path-tracing toggle is actually active and whether you are comparing the same water, puddle or metal surface. Screen-space reflections can omit off-screen objects; path tracing can still produce a different result when denoising or reconstruction is stressed by motion.
Console options do not match PC guides
Console Ray Tracing Mode is not the same menu as the PC path-tracing renderer. The 2022 console implementation supplied ray-traced global illumination and ambient occlusion, and Xbox Series S had no ray-tracing features in that release.
The practical takeaway
The Witcher 3’s path tracing is a comprehensive lighting rewrite rather than a single reflection or shadow switch. It changes how direct light, bounced color, contact shading, shadows, reflections, emissive sources and water interactions relate to one another. Expect the clearest difference indoors and on reflective or wet materials; expect a smaller change in brightly sunlit scenes. Treat DLSS, FSR, XeSS, Ray Reconstruction and frame generation as performance and image-reconstruction tools, and judge the lighting mode separately from them.
