How the Symbol Clues for Resident Evil 4 Remake: Separate Ways’ Cliffside Door Puzzle Work

In Chapter 2 of Resident Evil 4 Remake: Separate Ways, the cliffside door opens when you select three symbols on the eight-button stone dais: the top-middle button (12 o’clock), the bottom-right button (about 4:30), and the left button (9 o’clock). Select all three in any order. Once the door opens, the grapple route beyond it advances the story and serves as a point of no return for this cliffside area, so complete the nearby Merchant request before grappling onward.

The puzzle is difficult because its three clues are not presented together. One mark is beside the door, another is high above the grapple route, and the last is fragmented across several levels of the wooden walkway. You must view the separated pieces from the correct angle to recognize one symbol, then translate all three environmental marks into matching positions on the circular dais.

Where the puzzle appears

This is the first major symbol-lock puzzle in the Separate Ways campaign. Ada reaches it in Chapter 2 while following the wooden cliffside paths toward the church. The area is a cavernous vertical space rather than a flat room: the altar-like stone dais sits near the door, walkways cross the cliff at different heights, and a grapple point is positioned beyond the locked route.

The circular panel has eight symbols arranged around its face. Only three buttons are correct. The marks you see on the surrounding rock and timber are not decorative graffiti; they are environmental versions of the three symbols that must be selected on the dais.

  • Separate Ways – the missing link in the main story – is a thrilling survival-horror adventure starring Ada Wong.
  • See the other side of the story from her eyes as her mission, and fate, intertwines with Leon Kennedy's a second time.

The solution at a glance

Dais position Clock-face position Where the matching clue is found
Top middle 12 o’clock One of the painted marks near the cliffside route
Bottom right Approximately 4:30 One of the painted marks near the cliffside route
Left side 9 o’clock One of the painted marks near the cliffside route

Some walkthroughs call the same three positions “1-4-7,” counting locations around the circular panel. That shorthand can be confusing because guides do not always number the panel from the same starting point. Clock positions and the physical descriptions above are safer: top middle, bottom right, and left.

How each symbol clue is hidden

1. The mark beside the door

Stand facing the stone dais and inspect the wall immediately to the right of the altar and door. This is the most visible clue and the one most players find first. Its placement makes it look like a casual wall marking, but its shape matches one of the symbols on the circular panel.

Do not press a button merely because this is the first mark you notice. The door requires three selections, so this clue is only one part of the combination. Use the dais as your reference point and note the symbol’s position rather than relying on the direction in which Ada approached the room.

2. The mark above the grapple point

Turn away from the dais and look toward the opposite cliff face or the stone outcropping above the grapple route. The second clue is elevated, so it is easy to miss when you keep your camera aimed at the door. Move your view upward and scan the rock around the area where the route continues.

Resident Evil 4 - PS4
  • Reawaken a Classic – Resident Evil 4 preserves the essence of the original game, now reconstructed using Capcom’s proprietary RE Engine to deliver realistic visuals and additional narrative depth to the iconic story that was not possible at the time of the original release.
  • Modernized Gameplay – The team from 2019’s Resident Evil 2 returns to build upon the series’ modern approach to survival horror. Engage in frenzied combat with the Ganados villagers, explore a European village gripped by madness, and solve puzzles to access new areas and collect useful items for Leon and Ashley’s constant struggle to survive.
  • Overwhelming Hordes – Face hordes of rabid enemies that threaten to overwhelm Leon with even more diverse methods of attack than in the original release.
  • Survive on a Knife’s Edge – Years of intense training have taught Leon new ways to use his knife, helping to even the odds against the unrelenting onslaught of enemies. By parrying enemy attacks, you can avoid debilitating damage and evade lunging enemies seeking to grab Leon and hold him in place. Make smart use of scavenged knives to deliver precise finishing moves on vulnerable enemies, and even use the element of surprise to quietly dispatch unsuspecting foes before they break.
  • Reimagined Story – Resident Evil 4 dials up the original release’s key feelings of loneliness and the fear of enemies blinded by zealotry, while providing more nuanced depictions of the character motivations and relationships that defined the 2005 survival horror icon.

This clue is deliberately separated from the first by both distance and height. If you have identified only the marking beside the door, you have not yet seen the complete set. The correct symbol is painted into the scenery above the path that eventually leads to the grapple point.

3. The fragmented mark on the upper walkways

The final clue is split across different layers of the wooden walkway. Individual pieces do not look like a complete symbol when viewed from directly below or from the wrong section of the path. Travel to the far end of the highest platform, then look back across the walkway layers until the fragments line up.

This is a perspective puzzle. The pieces are designed to merge visually from one particular viewing angle. If you see several short strokes that seem unrelated, change your position along the upper platform rather than searching for another wall. When the geometry aligns, the separate pieces form one recognizable symbol that corresponds to the remaining button on the dais.

Step-by-step: solve the door without guessing

  1. Reach the stone dais. Approach the circular panel in the cliffside cavern on the route toward the church. Confirm that you are at the eight-symbol door rather than a nearby environmental marking.
  2. Establish your orientation. Face the dais squarely. Treat the uppermost button as 12 o’clock, the left button as 9 o’clock, and the lower-right button as approximately 4:30. This removes ambiguity caused by rotating the camera.
  3. Inspect the wall to the right. While facing the dais, examine the wall immediately to the right of the altar and door. Record the matching symbol’s location on the circular panel.
  4. Turn toward the opposite cliff. Look above the grapple route and inspect the stone outcropping or cliff face for the second painted mark. Compare its shape with the eight options on the dais.
  5. Climb to the highest wooden platform. Follow the upper walkway to its far end. The third clue is not meant to be read from the lower path.
  6. Align the broken pieces. From the far end, adjust your viewpoint until the marks scattered across the walkway layers form one symbol. Match that completed shape to the panel.
  7. Select the three matching buttons. Press the top-middle, bottom-right, and left positions. The game does not require a particular order, so there is no penalty for selecting these three in a different sequence.
  8. Confirm the route before continuing. When the door opens, pause to finish the local Merchant request if it is still active. Grappling onward commits you to the next section of the route.

Understanding the panel’s orientation

The puzzle is easier when you describe positions spatially instead of by an assumed number sequence. Camera angle, character position, and guide numbering can all make “first,” “fourth,” or “seventh” sound different. The physical layout never changes while you are looking directly at the dais.

The “1-4-7” wording found in some unofficial explanations is simply another way of naming these same three locations. It is not a separate combination and does not indicate a required pressing sequence.

Why the upper-walkway clue causes so many misses

The first two marks can be found by inspecting obvious surfaces near the door and the continuation route. The third uses forced perspective: its pieces occupy different elevations, so the symbol is incomplete from most viewpoints. Players naturally search for a single large drawing and may conclude that the area contains only two clues.

Use the structure of the environment as a guide. The clue is associated with the highest wooden walkway, not with the lower ledges around the dais. Walk to the platform’s far end, then look across the stacked timber layers. A small change in position can make the lines coalesce. Once they do, compare the overall outline—not each fragment individually—with the eight symbols on the panel.

What happens when you press the buttons

All three correct positions must be selected, but the order is irrelevant. If you press one correct button and nothing appears to happen, that is expected: the mechanism opens only after the complete set has been entered. Conversely, pressing the three correct positions in a different order does not reset the puzzle.

The panel contains eight choices to make the environmental matching meaningful, yet the combination is only three symbols long. There is no second code, timing requirement, or hidden fourth selection described for this door. Concentrate on matching the three marks rather than trying every possible sequence.

Point-of-no-return warning

Opening the door is not the end of the local area. The path beyond leads to a grapple point that advances Ada and functions as a point of no return for the cliffside section. Before using it, finish the Merchant side mission available in the area and collect anything else you still intend to handle on these paths.

This warning matters even if you have solved the lock quickly. The puzzle itself does not consume a special item or require a separate reset, but moving past the grapple route changes your access to the cliffside space. Treat the opened door as your final checkpoint for optional work, not as an invitation to grapple immediately.

Troubleshooting when the door will not open

You found only one or two symbols

Return to the three clue zones in order: the wall immediately right of the dais, the cliff or stone outcropping above the grapple route, and the far end of the highest wooden platform. The last location is the one most often skipped because its mark is spread over multiple walkway layers.

The symbols do not seem to match

Check your viewing orientation. Stand facing the dais and use the panel’s top, left, and lower-right edges as fixed references. Do not compare a rotated camera view with a guide’s screenshot until you have translated both views to the same clock-face positions.

You pressed the buttons but nothing happened

Verify that all three positions have been selected. The mechanism waits for the complete trio, and the sequence does not matter. If one selection was wrong, inspect the environmental marks again instead of cycling through random buttons.

You cannot see the upper-walkway symbol

Move to the highest platform’s far end and look across the separate timber levels. The clue is intentionally fragmented from ordinary angles. Search for the viewpoint where the pieces become one continuous outline.

You are ready to grapple onward

First check whether the local Merchant request is complete. The grapple route is the area’s practical point of no return, so postponing optional business until after the transition may leave it unavailable in this cliffside section.

A compact memory aid

Remember the route as door, high rock, upper walkway. Those are the three places to inspect. Remember the panel as 12, 4:30, 9. Those are the three positions to press. The numbers describe locations on a clock face, not a sequence, so choose all three in any order.

Checklist before leaving the cliffside

  • Three environmental marks have been identified.
  • The fragmented upper-walkway mark was viewed from the alignment angle.
  • The dais was read while facing it directly.
  • The top-middle, bottom-right, and left positions were all selected.
  • The door has visibly opened.
  • The local Merchant request has been completed if you want its reward.
  • You are ready to treat the grapple route as a one-way progression for this area.

Why this puzzle echoes the main campaign

The lock uses the same broad idea as the symbol puzzles in the main Resident Evil 4 Remake campaign: environmental signs are translated into matching inputs on a dedicated panel. Separate Ways changes the presentation by placing the clues in a vertical cliffside and splitting one symbol across the walkway. That relocation is why a player familiar with the main game can still overlook the solution—the challenge is less about the final button pattern than about reading three marks spread through different elevations.

Once you know to search vertically and to use a clock face for the dais, the puzzle has a consistent logic. Every required input is represented in the environment, the three selections can be made in any order, and the only consequential decision after the solve is whether you have finished the optional work before taking the grapple route.
