The PWHL’s 2026–27 playoffs include eight of the league’s 12 teams: the top four from each six-team conference. The postseason has three rounds: best-of-three first-round series, best-of-five conference finals and a best-of-five Walter Cup Final. Each conference’s first-place team may choose its first-round opponent from that conference’s third- or fourth-place team.
How teams qualify
The 2026–27 PWHL has 12 teams split into Eastern and Western conferences, with six teams in each. Four teams from each conference qualify, making eight playoff teams overall. The eight-team playoff field does not mean the league has only eight teams.

How the playoff rounds work
| Round | Teams and matchups | Series length |
|---|---|---|
| First round | Eight qualifiers play in four series. In each conference, the first-place team chooses either the third- or fourth-place finisher as its opponent. | Best-of-three |
| Conference finals | Winners advance to the conference-stage round. | Best-of-five |
| Walter Cup Final | The conference finalists meet for the championship. | Best-of-five |
In a best-of-three series, a team must win two games to advance. In a best-of-five, it must win three. The league’s announcement specifies the first-round opponent choice, but does not detail additional reseeding rules or how later-round matchups are set.

What changed from earlier PWHL postseasons
The PWHL says its first three postseasons used four playoff teams and two rounds. For 2026–27, the field expands to eight teams and the postseason has three rounds. The league announced the format alongside a 180-game regular-season schedule running from December 5 through April 18, 2026–27; those figures describe the regular season, not the playoff schedule.
