To compare U.S. savings accounts, look beyond the headline rate: compare APY, fees, balance requirements, rate-change terms, access, and deposit-insurance status using the balance you expect to keep. The Federal Reserve is not currently holding its rate: on September 16, 2026, the FOMC raised its federal funds target range by 0.25 percentage point to 3-3/4 to 4 percent. Even during a future rate hold, a bank’s savings APY is not fixed by the Fed and need not move in step with its policy rate.
Why a Fed rate hold does not freeze savings APYs
The federal funds rate is the overnight rate banks charge one another. The Federal Reserve says changes to its target range influence other short-term rates, but it does not set a savings-account rate for each bank. A bank may change a variable APY independently; a policy-rate hold is not a promise that your savings yield will stay the same.

For current U.S. context, the FOMC’s September 16, 2026 statement says it raised the target range by one-quarter percentage point to 3-3/4 to 4 percent. The committee said economic activity was expanding at a solid pace and inflation remained elevated. That is a dated policy decision, not an account-rate forecast.

The stated interest rate is the rate used to calculate interest. Annual percentage yield (APY) annualizes the return and accounts for compounding under standardized assumptions, so it is generally the more useful figure for comparing deposit accounts. Regulation DD requires disclosures of APY and other account terms so consumers can compare products; see the Federal Reserve’s deposit-account disclosure summary.
#1 Best Overall
APY is a comparison measure, not a guarantee of what you will earn. Under the federal APY rules, an account without a stated maturity, such as a typical savings account, is calculated using an assumed 365-day term, with principal and interest left on deposit and no other transactions. Your actual return will differ if your balance changes, you make withdrawals, the rate changes, or fees apply. The Federal Reserve explains these assumptions in Appendix A to Regulation DD.
Variable rates and promotional offers
For a variable-rate account without an introductory premium, the disclosed APY calculation uses the initial rate and assumes it stays unchanged for a year. That assumption standardizes the comparison; it does not predict the bank’s future rate.

For an introductory premium, the calculation accounts for the promotional period and then uses the non-promotional variable rate that applied when the disclosure was prepared. Check the promotion’s end date and the rate that follows it. A high introductory APY may not represent what you will earn over a longer holding period.

Before comparing offers, write down the balance you expect to keep and how often you may need to move money. Then check each account’s current disclosure for:
Rank #3
- Opening minimum: the amount required to open the account.
- Rate-qualifying balance: whether a minimum balance is required to earn the advertised APY, and whether the rate applies to the entire balance or only a tier.
- Fee-avoidance balance: the minimum needed to avoid a recurring maintenance fee. This may differ from the minimum needed to earn the APY.
- Other charges and limits: maintenance fees, permitted transaction limits, and charges for related services.
- Rate terms: whether the rate is variable, any promotional end date, and how the account’s terms describe rate changes.
Estimate interest on your likely balance and holding period, then subtract fees you expect to incur. A higher advertised APY can be less valuable if you do not meet its balance conditions or pay recurring charges. Regulation DD requires institutions to disclose APY, fees, minimum-balance requirements, variable-rate information, and other relevant terms before account opening; review the institution’s current disclosure rather than relying on an old comparison page.
Check access and deposit safety
Convenience matters when savings need to be available. Confirm how you can transfer money in and out, the expected transfer timing, any withdrawal or transaction restrictions, and whether branch or ATM access matters to you. Verify those operational details in the account’s current terms.
Rank #4
Also confirm that the bank is FDIC-insured or that the credit union has applicable NCUA share insurance. Check how coverage applies to the account’s ownership category and your total balances at the institution with the relevant insurer. Do not assume that an institution’s branding or a product name alone establishes insurance coverage.
A practical account-comparison workflow
- Collect current offers. For each account, obtain the current rate and account disclosure from the institution, noting the date and any eligibility conditions.
- Apply your own balance. Compare the APY and tier rules using the amount you expect to hold, not an illustrative balance chosen by the bank.
- Estimate net interest. Account for the likely holding period, promotional-rate end date, potential variable-rate changes, and avoidable fees.
- Check access and restrictions. Confirm transfer methods and timing, transaction limitations, and any service fees relevant to your use.
- Verify insurance and terms before opening. Confirm the institution’s status and your applicable coverage, then reread the account disclosure immediately before applying.
How much should a dated market benchmark matter?
The FDIC’s national rate table reported a 0.39% national savings deposit rate and a 4.39% national rate cap on March 16, 2026; the FDIC says savings and interest-checking figures use the $2,500 product tier. These are dated national benchmarks, not October 2026 rates or a ranking of accounts available to you. Check the FDIC national rates page directly for its current table, and compare it with actual institution disclosures.
Best Value
Liquidity is one reason the access terms deserve attention. In the Federal Reserve’s 2026 household survey, fielded in 2025, 63% of adults said they would cover a hypothetical $400 emergency expense exclusively using cash, savings, or a credit card paid off at the next statement. That finding describes reported responses; it does not prescribe a savings target or account choice.
