Pocket Gamer Awards winners are chosen by fans in a public vote. Pocket Gamer’s team and industry experts organise the awards, define the categories and turn the nomination pool into a shortlist, but the published rules describe the final decision as entirely public-vote based. The recurring sequence is public nominations, Pocket Gamer’s shortlist, roughly one month of voting on that shortlist, and a winner reveal at a cycle-specific event or in a stated month.
The process in one view
The awards use a funnel rather than a standing jury that scores every entry. Players first suggest games during an open nomination period. Pocket Gamer then reviews the nominations, checks whether important candidates were missed and publishes a shortlist for each category. Fans vote among those shortlisted entries. After voting closes, Pocket Gamer announces the winner.

- Public nominations: submissions create the longlist of potential nominees.
- Pocket Gamer shortlist: the organiser totals nominations and applies an editorial check before selecting the category finalists.
- Public vote: fans and players choose among the shortlisted games, normally during a voting window of about one month.
- Winner reveal: results are announced on a date tied to that awards cycle, often as part of a Pocket Gamer event.
That means “judging” refers mainly to organising, defining categories and curating the shortlist. It does not describe a published system in which a disclosed panel’s scores are combined with fan votes.
Stage 1: anyone can nominate during the open window
How nominations create the longlist
Pocket Gamer publishes the award categories and invites the public to nominate favourite games. A nomination is a suggestion for consideration, not a guaranteed place on the final ballot. The accumulated nominations form the longlist from which Pocket Gamer builds the category shortlists.

The nomination period is set for each cycle. In the 2024 awards, nominations were open until 31 October at 6 p.m. UK time. The exact closing date and time can change in a later cycle, so a nomination is only counted if it is submitted before the deadline shown for that year.
Who can nominate?
The published description says anyone can submit nominations during the open period. It does not describe a requirement to work in games, own a particular device, subscribe to Pocket Gamer or belong to an industry organisation. A person’s nomination helps identify candidates, but the published material does not state how many nominations are needed for a game to advance.
What a nomination does not guarantee
Nomination totals are used to build the longlist, yet Pocket Gamer also checks whether significant candidates were overlooked. A game with many nominations is therefore not automatically guaranteed a shortlist place, and a less frequently nominated game can still be considered during the organiser’s review.
Stage 2: Pocket Gamer turns nominations into the shortlist
What the organiser does
After nominations close, Pocket Gamer totals the submissions in each category and reviews the results. Its stated purpose is to make sure important candidates were not missed, then publish a shortlist for every category. This is the main point at which Pocket Gamer’s editorial and industry expertise enters the process.
The public descriptions do not provide a fixed scoring sheet, a judge-by-judge ranking, a minimum nomination threshold or a formula for resolving close calls. They also do not name an individual judge roster. The safe interpretation is that Pocket Gamer curates the shortlist, rather than applying a publicly documented numerical jury calculation.

What appears on the ballot
Only shortlisted entries proceed to the public vote. A nomination campaign therefore has two different objectives: first, bring a game to Pocket Gamer’s attention; second, persuade enough people to vote once the shortlist is published. Until the shortlist is announced, a nominated game should be treated as under consideration rather than a finalist.
Stage 3: fans decide the winners in a public vote
How voting works
Once the shortlist is live, fans and players select their choices in the public voting period. Pocket Gamer’s official wording says the awards are “Organised by industry experts but voted on by you, the fans.” Its announcement for the 12th Awards is even more explicit: the winners are “all determined by a public vote.”
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Voting generally remains open for about one month. The 2024 cycle used the whole of November after the October nomination deadline. The exact opening and closing dates are cycle-specific and should be taken from the live voting page for that year.
What “public” establishes—and what it does not
Public voting means the final choice comes from fan participation rather than a disclosed weighted jury. The published rules reviewed do not state that voters must meet a particular age, location or account requirement, nor do they publish a vote cap per person. They also do not describe anti-bot controls, a validation method, vote totals or the percentage of votes required to win. Unless a future cycle publishes those details, they should be treated as unpublished rules rather than assumed safeguards or restrictions.
Can experts override the vote?
No published rule in the described process gives experts a post-vote override. Expert involvement is documented in organising the categories and curating the shortlist; the winner is presented as the result of the public vote. That is why it would be inaccurate to call the awards a jury-weighted system without a new rule explicitly adding such weighting.

When and where winners are revealed
The reveal date is not identical every year. In the 2024 cycle, winners were revealed at a live event on 6 December. The 12th-cycle announcement said the winners would be revealed at Pocket Gamer Connects London. The 2027 About page describes winner reveals in January. These examples show that the announcement timing follows the individual cycle’s schedule and event plans, not a permanent date.

Eligibility: the release window rolls forward each year
Most new-release categories
For the 2027 cycle, most categories covering new releases, updates and experiences consider material released from 1 October 2025 through 30 September 2026. This is a one-year window that rolls forward with the awards cycle.
The 12th Awards, identified as the 2025 cycle, used 1 October 2024 through 30 September 2025 for most eligible new releases. Comparing the two cycles shows how the dates move forward rather than defining one permanent eligibility period.
Categories with lasting-relevance exceptions
Pocket Gamer lists exemptions for categories intended to recognise games or features whose relevance extends beyond a single release year. The 2027 description names:

The nomination information also explains that some categories can consider games released five or ten years earlier when those games still have active players. A game outside the normal one-year window is therefore not automatically ineligible; its category’s rule matters.
Why the category matters
Release-date eligibility is not a single universal test applied identically to every award. A newly launched game, a long-running community and a current in-game collaboration can be evaluated under different category rules. Read the nomination form for the specific category instead of assuming that the general new-release dates apply everywhere.
A cycle-by-cycle timeline
| Cycle or description | Eligibility window for most new releases | Nomination or voting timing | Winner reveal information |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2024 awards | Not specified in the published details described here | Nominations closed 31 October at 6 p.m. UK time; public voting ran through November | Live event on 6 December |
| 12th Awards (2025 cycle) | 1 October 2024–30 September 2025 | Cycle-specific nomination and voting dates | Pocket Gamer Connects London |
| 2027 cycle description | 1 October 2025–30 September 2026 | Process described as lasting about one month for the public-vote stage | January |
The 2024 row illustrates a concrete completed schedule. The later-cycle rows illustrate the rolling window and the different reveal timing described for those cycles; they should not be read as a promise that every future awards program will use the same dates.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to take part as a player
- Check the cycle’s category list. Identify whether the game, update or experience fits a new-release category or an exception category with continuing eligibility.
- Submit a nomination before the stated deadline. Use the official nomination form and note the time zone. In the 2024 cycle, the cutoff was 6 p.m. UK time on 31 October.
- Wait for the shortlist announcement. A nomination enters consideration; it does not itself place the game on the ballot.
- Return during the voting window. Vote for the shortlisted entry you support while the public ballot is open, normally for about a month.
- Follow the cycle’s reveal announcement. The winner may be announced at a live Pocket Gamer event or in the month specified for that cycle.
Keep the nomination and voting stages separate. Nominating a game does not count as a vote for it, and voting is only possible after Pocket Gamer publishes the shortlist.
What is—and is not—published about the judging system
The public descriptions establish the organiser’s role and the fan-vote outcome, but they leave several operational details open. No official page described in the available material publishes:
Best Value
- an aggregate nomination count for each game or category;
- final vote totals or turnout;
- a named judge roster;
- a numerical scorecard or weighting between experts and fans;
- a voter eligibility rule, account requirement or per-person vote cap; or
- anti-bot and duplicate-vote controls.
Those omissions do not change the stated result: fans choose the winners in a public vote. They do mean that readers should not infer a hidden percentage split, a specific verification system or a minimum vote threshold. If a future cycle adds such provisions, that cycle’s rules would supersede this general description.
What the process means for developers and communities
For newly released games
The rolling one-year window makes launch timing important. A game released between 1 October and the following 30 September will generally fall within the relevant new-release period for that cycle, subject to the category’s own definition. Developers and players should verify the dates for the specific year rather than rely on an older awards page.
For established games
Long-running games can remain relevant through categories built around characters, communities, ongoing play, updates or collaborations. The five- and ten-year examples in the nomination information show that age alone does not disqualify a game where the category recognises continuing activity.

For voters
The shortlist is the practical starting point for a final decision. Because the published process does not provide vote totals or a disclosed weighting formula, voters should treat the ballot as a direct choice among the listed finalists, not as one component of a publicly calculated jury average.
Common misunderstandings to avoid
- “Experts pick the winner.” Experts and Pocket Gamer organise and curate; the published rule says fans determine the winner.
- “Every nomination becomes a finalist.” Nominations form the longlist. Pocket Gamer selects the shortlist after reviewing them.
- “The eligibility dates never change.” The one-year window rolls forward each cycle, and some categories use exemptions.
- “Voting always ends on the same day.” The 2024 cycle used November, while later descriptions specify only an approximately month-long window; exact dates are cycle-specific.
- “A December announcement is guaranteed.” One cycle revealed winners on 6 December, another description places the reveal in January, and the 12th cycle tied it to Pocket Gamer Connects London.
The practical answer
To understand who decides a Pocket Gamer Award, separate curation from the final choice. Pocket Gamer and industry experts organise the categories and create a shortlist from public nominations. Fans then vote publicly on that shortlist for about a month. The winning game is the entry that emerges from that public vote, with the announcement date and event varying by cycle. Eligibility normally follows a rolling 1 October–30 September release window for new-release categories, while several awards allow older games or ongoing features when their category is designed to recognise lasting relevance.
