Microsoft’s December 1, 2014 acquisition of Acompli accelerated its move into cross-platform mobile productivity. Acompli’s iOS and Android email app, technology and team became the foundation for Outlook on iOS and Android, launched on January 29, 2015. Microsoft presented the deal as a way to combine Acompli’s mobile-email work with its existing Outlook development and help people work across the email services they already used.
What Microsoft bought
Microsoft announced the acquisition on December 1, 2014, describing Acompli as a provider of mobile email applications for iOS and Android. Its announcement emphasized both product capabilities and people: Acompli offered technology for mobile email, while its team brought experience building a cross-platform productivity app.

The announcement highlighted inbox prioritization, meeting scheduling, and working with attachments and files. Microsoft’s stated objective was broader than adding another mail client. Rajesh Jha, then executive vice president of Microsoft’s Office Product Group, said the acquisition was part of the company-wide effort to help people accomplish more with mobile devices and to deliver cross-platform apps that supported the variety of email services people used.

Microsoft also cited a then-current internal figure that more than half of email messages were first read on a mobile device. That was a statistic in the 2014 announcement, not an independently verified current measurement.

Why the deal changed Microsoft’s approach
A ready-made mobile product
Buying Acompli gave Microsoft an existing email experience designed specifically for phones and tablets instead of requiring the Outlook organization to start from a blank slate. The evidence supports describing this as an acceleration of Microsoft’s mobile email work, not as proof of a particular competitive maneuver.
A team as well as an app
Microsoft said it was acquiring innovative technology and talent. At the January 2015 launch, Microsoft Office general manager Julia White said the Acompli team had become a core part of the Outlook team. That personnel transition helps explain how the acquisition produced a public product so quickly.

Cross-platform reach
Acompli already targeted iOS and Android. Microsoft’s rationale therefore fit its broader effort to deliver Office-related productivity across platforms rather than limit the experience to Windows phones.

The launch-era Outlook apps were based on Acompli’s application and technology. Contemporaneous reporting described support for Office 365, Exchange, Outlook.com, Yahoo! Mail, Gmail and most other email providers. Those names describe the service at launch in January 2015; they are not a current compatibility list.

The launch also demonstrated the practical meaning of Microsoft’s rationale: one mobile app aimed to bring together email, scheduling and file or attachment workflows for people whose accounts could span different providers.
How Sunrise fits the same strategy
Microsoft’s February 2015 announcement of the Sunrise calendar acquisition supplied a second piece of the strategy. Sunrise focused on mobile calendaring, while Acompli focused on email. By discussing the two deals in the same period, Microsoft presented a broader ambition to rethink mobile email and calendaring across platforms.

That context does not make Sunrise a competing email acquisition. It shows Microsoft assembling complementary mobile productivity capabilities: Acompli for email and Sunrise for calendars.
What is established—and what is not
- Established: Microsoft announced the acquisition on December 1, 2014; Acompli made mobile email apps for iOS and Android; Microsoft said it would combine Acompli’s work with Outlook development; and Outlook for iOS and Android launched on January 29, 2015, based on Acompli’s application and technology.
- Not established by the cited primary sources: the technical details of the code integration, whether every Acompli feature survived unchanged, or the present availability of a standalone Acompli app.
- Acquisition price: TechCrunch reported $200 million in January 2015, but Microsoft’s official announcement and acquisition-history record reviewed for this account do not verify that figure. It should therefore be treated as an attributed, unconfirmed report rather than an official transaction term.
Why the acquisition remains significant
The clearest outcome was speed and continuity: less than two months after announcing the deal, Microsoft released a new Outlook experience for iOS and Android built on Acompli’s product and technology, with the acquired team folded into Outlook. The transaction helped turn Microsoft’s cross-platform mobile email objective into a shipped product and established the foundation for its wider mobile productivity push.
