The “world first” GPS goggles with a head-mounted display were the Recon Instruments and Zeal Optics Transcend GPS ski goggles. Introduced in 2010, they paired GPS and onboard sensors with a small micro-LCD inside the goggles, showing the wearer skiing data without requiring a glance at a separate device. Contemporary coverage used the “world first” description; the available records do not establish that no earlier competing device existed.
How the Transcend GPS goggles worked
An onboard computer gathered information from GPS and other sensors, then presented selected data on a micro-LCD inside the goggles. The optics made the image appear in front of the wearer, creating a head-mounted display for use on the slopes. New Atlas’s 2010 report listed speed, altitude, vertical odometer, distance, location, temperature and time among the live information available, along with stopwatch or chronometer functionality.

The concept was to make those figures visible while skiing rather than require the wearer to check a handheld device. The product’s launch description and features are historical claims; they do not establish present-day software support or availability.

Zeal announced a US$549 price and availability through specialty retailers and online at that time. These details, including the battery estimate and price, come from the company’s September 2011 release; they are not current specifications or availability information. In that release, Zeal head of marketing Joe Prebich said, “These goggles really put the rider in charge of the real-time data they want to see.” That is a marketing statement, not independent evidence of performance.

What “world first” means here
Contemporary coverage described the Transcend as the world’s first GPS goggles with a head-mounted display. A 2010 USPTO trademark record includes goods language for snow goggles with a GPS head-mounted display, and reports dates claimed in the filing; such a record documents the filing, not independent proof of historical priority. A thesis indexed by Library and Archives Canada also refers to GPS/INS-enabled Recon goggles, providing academic context but not a comprehensive comparison with earlier products. The “world first” label is therefore best understood as the description used at launch, not as a conclusively verified ranking.

Can you buy them today?
The cited sources establish the Transcend’s historical launch features and prices and Zeal’s 2011 Z3 announcement. They do not establish current resale stock, ongoing software availability, or whether a present-day goggle offers the same integrated GPS display. A contemporary reader asking where to buy a pair reflected interest at the time, not evidence of present availability. Verify the exact model, condition, included controls and software before considering a used listing; do not assume ordinary GPS ski goggles include an in-goggle display.
