The cover image at issue appeared on the Italian edition of John Scalzi’s Starter Villain. Scalzi said he approved it believing it was made by a human, then took responsibility and said he would require future contracts to specify human-created cover art.
Which John Scalzi book had an AI-generated cover?
The incident concerned the Italian edition of Starter Villain, not all editions of the novel or Scalzi’s other book covers. Scalzi disclosed the issue on June 21, 2024, after human artists traced the cover image to stock art labeled by Adobe Stock as “generated with AI.” Scalzi’s June 21, 2024 post describes how the image was identified.

Did Scalzi knowingly approve AI art?
According to Scalzi, no. He said he had a policy against accepting AI-generated art for final covers, but that the policy had not been communicated effectively. When the image was submitted for approval, he assumed a human had made it. He acknowledged approving it and accepted responsibility, while also saying stock sites did not consistently label AI-generated material at the time it was selected. He did not attribute the mistake to bad faith by the Italian publisher or its art staff. Futurism’s June 24, 2024 account quotes his explanation.

What did Scalzi do after discovering the cover issue?
In 2024, Scalzi said he would ask his agent to make human-created cover art an explicit requirement in future book contracts. In an August 13, 2026 Bluesky follow-up, he said he apologized, made the issue a contract point so the art could not be used again, and donated to an arts organization supporting young artists. His Bluesky follow-up records that later account.

How can authors reduce the risk of AI art appearing on a cover?
The episode points to two practical safeguards: put the requirement in writing and check the image’s provenance before approval. A general preference can be missed as a project passes between an author, agent, publisher, designer, and stock-art supplier.
- Specify the standard in the contract. State that final cover art must be created by a human artist, and define what that means for stock imagery, composites, and AI-assisted work.
- Ask for provenance. Before approving a cover, request the source and licensing record for each stock image or other visual element, including any available AI-generation label.
- Make approval controls explicit. Agree on who checks image sources and how concerns are escalated before a cover is finalized.
- Keep a record. Save the approved artwork, source details, and relevant correspondence so the parties can resolve questions about the image later.
These steps cannot guarantee that every platform label is complete, but they make expectations clearer and give the author and publisher a defined verification process.
