How Tenebris Somnia Combines 2D Gameplay With Live-Action Horror Scenes

Tenebris Somnia combines a playable 2D, pixel-art survival-horror game with filmed sequences made with actors, real locations, practical creature effects, prosthetics and limited CGI. The live-action footage is not reserved for predictable end-of-level movies: it can begin or end around an encounter, and a filmed moment can place you directly into a fight. That timing makes the footage part of the game’s suspense system rather than a separate reward for finishing a stage.

The result is a deliberately unstable boundary between controlling a sprite and watching a horror film. You explore, solve puzzles, fight and manage scarce health and ammunition in the pixel-art layer, then move through matched live-action spaces when the story needs a more intense performance, a clearer visual reveal or a stronger physical effect.

What the hybrid format means in practice

Steam describes Tenebris Somnia as a retro 2D adaptation of the survival-horror tradition. Its foundation is interactive: exploration, puzzle solving, combat and survival-resource management take place in a low-resolution pixel-art world. Doors, rooms, enemies and objects are part of the playable map, so the player’s decisions determine where to go, what to examine and how to spend limited supplies.

At selected points, the presentation changes to live action. Real performers occupy real sets and locations, while practical effects, prosthetics and filmed camera work deliver information that would be difficult to convey with a small pixel-art character alone. These scenes carry atmosphere, physical detail and emotional performance, but they remain connected to the player’s route through the game.

The distinction is therefore not “gameplay versus unrelated video.” A better description is two visual languages serving one survival-horror system:

  • Pixel art handles agency: movement, searching, puzzles, combat and resource choices.
  • Live action handles impact: performances, body horror, detailed locations, creature reveals and moments that need cinematic timing.
  • Transitions preserve uncertainty: the player cannot assume that a movie will start only after danger has ended.

Steam’s description says the game’s secrets are found in its cinematics, but those cinematics are placed inside the same journey as the rooms and encounters you play.

Are the live-action scenes just cutscenes?

They are filmed sequences in the technical sense, yet their role is closer to an interactive hazard or story trigger than to a conventional reward movie. In an Xbox Wire interview, the developers said the cutscenes are “directly linked to the gameplay” and that players “never know when a cutscene will begin or end.” A sequence may drop you into an enemy encounter, or it may start immediately after one.

How a transition can work

  1. Explore a pixel-art room. You control the character, inspect objects and follow the game’s environmental clues.
  2. Reach a narrative trigger. The trigger can be tied to a door, a question, an object or the aftermath of an encounter rather than a neatly marked movie entrance.
  3. Match the visual action. The filmed scene begins from a composition that corresponds to the room, doorway or object you just saw in the game.
  4. Let the threat continue across the edit. The live-action shot can reveal an enemy or event and return control with an encounter already in progress, or it can follow a battle so closely that the danger never feels fully paused.

One example described by director Andrés Borghi has a pixel-art character asking, “Who opened the door?” The film then begins on an open door. The question, the object and the camera view form one continuous beat instead of two unrelated scenes.

Why unpredictable boundaries matter

Traditional survival-horror cutscenes often signal safety: the player reaches a threshold, watches a movie, then resumes play with time to prepare. Tenebris Somnia uses uncertainty differently. Because the edit can occur before or after an encounter, the player must keep reading the situation even when the presentation changes. A visually impressive shot is not necessarily a safe pause, and the return to control can be as important as the reveal itself.

Why the game divides information between formats

Borghi said the split developed organically during production. The team selected live action when a moment needed a stronger horror atmosphere, more detailed visual information or the emotional force of a human performance. Gameplay dialogue carries other information, particularly because the live-action scenes do not use spoken dialogue.

Atmosphere and visual detail

A filmed location can show texture, scale, lighting and bodily movement in a way that a tiny sprite cannot. A practical mask deforming under light, a performer’s reaction or a camera moving through a real corridor can make a reveal feel immediate. Pixel art then provides the player’s map and the rules for interacting with that space.

Performance without a localization burden

Because the live-action material is silent, dialogue-heavy exposition remains in the playable layer. That choice helps localization: spoken lines do not need to be re-recorded for every language, while the filmed material can communicate through action, framing and effects. It also keeps the two formats functionally distinct without making either one a disposable interlude.

How the filmed rooms become pixel-art rooms

The team did not first build a complete pixel-art map and then search for real places that happened to match it. Borghi described the opposite order for rooms that contain cinematics: film the live-action material first, then convert those filmed environments into their pixel-art counterparts.

The production sequence

  1. Script the scene. The team identifies what the player needs to learn or feel and how the moment connects to play.
  2. Storyboard the action. Camera positions, entrances, effects and transition points are planned before filming.
  3. Cast and prepare the effects. Performers, costumes, creature pieces and makeup are organized around the shot requirements.
  4. Film the location. The live-action set establishes the real architecture, lighting and object placement.
  5. Build the pixel-art version. Artists translate the filmed room into a low-resolution playable space rather than trying to force a real location to fit a pre-existing digital layout.
  6. Align the edit and the game. Doorways, props, camera direction and timing are checked so an action in one format can continue naturally in the other.

This workflow solves a practical problem: real rooms rarely conform perfectly to a prebuilt game map. Filming first gives the artists a fixed visual reference and lets the playable version inherit the room’s proportions, dressing and key sight lines.

Matched spaces and editorial cues

The handoff depends on recognizable anchors. A doorway, a corridor, a table or a particular camera angle can appear in both versions. Xbox Wire reported that the film sets had to match in-game locations, requiring careful set dressing and seamless CGI where necessary. The transition works because the player can understand that the pixel-art room and the filmed room are the same place, not merely similar backgrounds.

How the monsters and gore were made

The creature pipeline begins with Borghi’s idea, develops through concept art by El Toreh, and becomes a physical puppet or prop built by effects artist Marcos Berta. Costume designers Ingrid Ross Aguirre, Anita Figueroa and Yuruani Rodriguez complete the appearance. Post-production then adds visual effects or CGI where a practical shot needs enhancement.

Practical construction first

The production emphasized physical materials rather than creating every monster digitally. Xbox Wire described practical monster effects supervised by Berta, along with silicon masks and prosthetics molded from performers’ faces. These pieces give the camera real surfaces, shadows and imperfections to capture. Limited CGI can extend or clean up an effect, but the base performance remains physically present on set.

Makeup and performer preparation

Several-hour makeup applications were part of the process. That time is significant because a silicon mask or facial prosthetic has to fit a performer closely enough for movement while preserving the intended shape under lighting. The result can be photographed from multiple angles without depending on a fully computer-generated face.

Locations that reinforce the horror

The reported production included a 17th-century Argentine cathedral and guerrilla filming in subway spaces. Those locations contribute more than scenery: stone, confined platforms and existing architectural details establish a physical world that would be expensive to recreate from scratch. Set dressing then makes the locations line up with the corresponding game rooms.

What “limited CGI” means here

Limited CGI does not mean there are no digital effects. It means computer imagery supports practical work instead of replacing it wholesale. Visual effects can blend a prosthetic into a shot, extend a creature, remove a production artifact or complete an impossible motion. The creature’s main form, texture and interaction with performers originate in physical effects.

Why Unreal Engine was chosen

Borghi said the team used Unreal Engine because it could render a low-resolution, pixel-perfect game while also playing video files immediately, without a loading delay between the interactive scene and the filmed material.

That combination addresses two technical requirements:

  • Pixel precision: the engine can preserve the intentionally low-resolution look instead of treating the art as a conventional high-resolution 3D scene with a filter applied afterward.
  • Fast video playback: live-action clips can appear in the flow of play without a conspicuous loading screen that would break the suspense.

The engine choice is therefore tied to the design, not just a production preference. Seamless playback matters when a door opening, a creature reveal or an immediate return to combat is supposed to feel like one event.

How pacing, puzzles and resources support the filmic structure

Borghi said the team treated the story like a film while allowing puzzles, exploration, battles and filmed sequences to arise from the narrative rather than follow a rigid formula. That does not remove game rules; it changes when those rules are emphasized.

Scarcity keeps the playable layer dangerous

Publisher executive producer Airdorf summarized the intended scarcity model in comments quoted by PC Gamer: players have only enough health, only enough ammunition and will often have to use a wrench or pipe. The wording describes pressure, not a published numerical balance sheet. Encounters are designed so that shooting is not automatically the best answer, and preserving supplies can matter more than clearing every threat.

Scarcity also makes the live-action transitions consequential. If a filmed reveal leads into a fight, the player cannot assume that the scene is merely decorative; the ammunition and health carried into that moment still matter. If it follows a battle, the footage can prolong the emotional cost of the resources just spent.

Story beats emerge from play

Rather than placing every movie at the same predictable interval, the game lets narrative events grow out of movement through rooms, puzzle progress and encounters. A question in gameplay can become a camera cue; a battle can flow into a filmed aftermath; a visual reveal can return control at the point where a decision is required.

What players should expect from the two-layer presentation

Aspect 2D playable layer Live-action layer
Primary purpose Exploration, puzzles, combat and survival decisions Atmosphere, performance, visual information and horror reveals
Visual method Low-resolution pixel art rendered pixel-perfect Actors, real locations, practical effects, prosthetics and selective CGI
Player control Direct control of movement and interactions Filmed action, with timing linked to the player’s progress
Relationship to danger Resource pressure and enemy encounters Can begin before an encounter, end after one or hand the player directly into danger
Dialogue Gameplay dialogue carries spoken exposition No spoken dialogue; meaning comes through action, images and sound
Space design Pixel-art versions of the relevant rooms Filmed rooms and locations matched through set dressing and visual cues

This arrangement explains why the game can feel like “playing through someone’s nightmares,” a description PC Gamer attributed to Airdorf. The nightmare quality comes from instability: the image style changes, but the story’s threat and the player’s responsibilities continue.

Release, platforms and production timeline

Tenebris Somnia released on October 16, 2026, for Windows on Steam and for Xbox Series X|S and Xbox PC. Xbox Wire’s production article, published the same day, described nearly four years of production. Borghi’s developer interview was published by 80 Level on August 6, 2026.

Those dates identify the version and platform context for the hybrid system described here. The available production reporting does not establish sales, budget, audience size or total production cost, so those figures should not be inferred from the game’s visual ambition or development duration.

Why this approach works as horror rather than spectacle

Live action alone does not make a game frightening, and pixel art alone does not make one retro. Tenebris Somnia’s method works because each format solves a different problem while the edit preserves continuity. The player gets the agency and pressure of a survival-horror game, then encounters physical faces, bodies, sets and effects that can make a reveal feel uncomfortably concrete.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The most important design choice is the timing. If every filmed scene arrived only after a puzzle, players could treat it as a guaranteed break. By allowing scenes to begin or end around encounters, the game keeps attention on the transition itself. A doorway can be a puzzle clue, a film cut and a threat entrance within the same sequence.

For players deciding whether the format suits them, the practical expectation is clear: this is not a conventional 2D game with optional movie bonuses. It is a survival-horror adventure in which filmed horror is woven into navigation, resource pressure and encounter timing. The pixel-art rooms provide the rules; the live-action rooms provide bodies, locations and effects that make those rules feel less predictable.
