How Tablets Manage Input, Processing, and Apps: Key Facts

A tablet combines physical components with firmware, system software and applications. Here’s how those layers differ and work together.

A tablet is a touchscreen computer built into a single chassis. Its hardware supplies the physical parts for input, processing, storage, display, and communication; firmware and system software coordinate those parts; and applications use services provided by the operating system to do tasks. The layers are a useful way to understand control, not a claim that every tablet has the same internal design.

What counts as a tablet?

Microsoft Learn’s Windows hardware guidance describes a tablet as a device that combines a touchscreen, rechargeable power source, and other components in one chassis, with an optional attachable keyboard. That is a practical form-factor description, not a universal legal definition. Microsoft Learn’s tablet guidance frames the description in a Windows design context.

A tablet is a computer, not merely a touchscreen: it has computing components and runs software. A keyboard may be absent, attached as an accessory, or part of a design that sits near the boundary with notebooks and 2-in-1 devices.

What is tablet hardware?

Hardware means the tangible physical components of a computing system. NIST’s CSRC glossary includes the definition “the material physical components of an information system.” In a tablet, examples can include the display and touch digitizer, battery, processor, memory, storage, cameras, buttons, and wireless radios. The precise components vary by device; the list is illustrative, not a required specification. NIST CSRC’s firmware glossary collects definitions for hardware and firmware.

What is tablet software?

Software is the programs and associated data that run on a device. It is not the physical screen or processor; it consists of instructions and information that the hardware executes or handles. NIST’s software glossary collects definitions that include programs and associated data that can be written or modified during execution. NIST CSRC’s software glossary provides those terminology references.

Platform software includes software that interacts with hardware or supplies services to other software. The U.S. Access Board gives that definition in its Revised 508 Standards and 255 Guidelines and lists operating systems among platform-software examples. U.S. Access Board guidance provides the formal context.

What does firmware do?

Firmware is low-level device code stored in, or closely tied to, hardware. It can provide instructions for basic device functions. NIST’s glossary includes definitions describing firmware as programs and data stored in hardware, often in ROM or programmable ROM, and another definition emphasizing code that is not dynamically changed during execution. Technical usage varies across sources and devices, so firmware is best understood as a category of low-level code rather than one identical component in every tablet.

How does a tablet control its hardware?

A useful conceptual model is a chain of responsibilities: physical parts provide capabilities, low-level code and system software coordinate them, and applications request services to complete user tasks.

  1. Hardware provides capabilities. The touchscreen can register touch input, the processor can execute instructions, storage can hold data, and the display can present output. Wireless components can communicate with other devices or networks.
  2. Firmware supports low-level functions. Device-specific code helps coordinate basic operations. Where firmware ends and other system software begins depends on the design.
  3. The operating system manages shared resources. NIST’s collected definitions describe an operating system as software or firmware acting as an intermediary between users and computer hardware. They include functions such as input/output control, resource scheduling, and data management. NIST CSRC’s operating-system glossary collects these definitions.
  4. Drivers help system software work with components and peripherals. Drivers are part of the supporting system-software picture, though systems do not all organize or implement them identically.
  5. Applications use system services. An app asks the operating system for capabilities it needs—for example, to receive input, display information, or access stored data—rather than independently managing every physical component.

This model explains the relationship without prescribing one universal startup order, firmware boundary, or driver architecture. Those implementation details differ among tablets.

How are hardware and software different?

Layer What it is Tablet examples
Hardware Physical components Screen, processor, battery, memory, storage, radios
Firmware Low-level code stored in or closely tied to hardware Device instructions for basic functions; exact implementation varies
Operating system and other system software Software that manages resources and provides common services OS functions and supporting drivers
Applications Programs that use system services to perform user tasks Apps for communication, creation, learning, or other tasks

The distinction is conceptual, but the layers depend on one another: hardware executes instructions, while firmware and software direct or coordinate device behavior. Without hardware, software has no tablet components on which to run; without software, the physical components cannot provide the coordinated computing experience people expect.

Is a tablet different from a notebook or 2-in-1?

The categories overlap, and a keyboard alone does not always settle the label. Microsoft describes a 2-in-1 as a convertible notebook that can shift from traditional notebook use to tablet mode. Its tablet guidance also allows an attachable keyboard. Microsoft’s terminology guidance uses “tablet” for a touchscreen computer without a permanently attached keyboard. These are form-factor and editorial conventions, not universal rules for every manufacturer’s marketing.

For a medical-software example, the FDA distinguishes software that drives or controls a medical device from standalone software that runs on a general-purpose mobile platform such as a tablet. That distinction belongs to the medical regulatory context; it should not be generalized to ordinary tablet apps. FDA digital health terms explains the terminology.
