These five preflight checks can catch avoidable technical and operational problems—but they cannot guarantee a successful generation or a video you like.
1. Make the brief and prompt testable
Before you open the generation controls, state what the video should show and what the viewer should see happen. A useful brief identifies the subject, setting, action or motion, framing or camera behavior, style, and intended duration. Include only details the chosen model or interface can actually control.

Separate the must-haves from creative latitude. For example, “a red bicycle crosses a wet city street at dusk, tracked from the side” gives the model a subject, action, setting, and camera direction. If the exact weather or camera move is not essential, leave room for the model to interpret it.
Runway’s Text to Video Prompting Guide recommends describing visual and motion elements, beginning simply, then refining. It also notes that not every prompt component needs to be specified. Treat that as Runway’s guidance, not a rule for every model.

2. Confirm the model, mode, and parameter combination
Check the current documentation for the exact model and generation mode you selected. Confirm that the model supports your task—such as text-to-video, image-to-video, or reference-guided generation—and that the requested duration, dimensions, aspect ratio, audio, and reference types are available together.
- Verify any limits on duration, resolution, aspect ratio, and reference count.
- Check whether the mode accepts a first-frame image, multiple references, or mixed image, video, and audio inputs.
- Look for fields or options that cannot be used in the same request.
- Confirm the selected output and delivery settings are supported by that model.
For example, SCX.ai’s Videos Create API Reference distinguishes an image-to-video input_reference from an omni-reference content list and says the two fields are mutually exclusive. Its model table specifies different accepted counts and durations. Those are SCX-specific constraints, not universal video-generation limits. There is no one set of file, duration, dimensions, or reference-count rules that applies across providers.

3. Validate each asset and how it reaches the service
For every image, video, audio file, or URL, check both the media itself and the method used to deliver it. A file can have the right content but still fail because it is inaccessible, too large, or encoded in an unsupported format.
- Confirm the provider accepts the file type and codec, and that the file meets its current size and dimension requirements.
- For URL-based inputs, check that the link is reachable by the service, uses any required protocol, and returns suitable content headers. Otherwise, use the provider’s supported upload method.
- Verify that the aspect ratio and dimensions work for the selected mode.
- Make each asset’s role clear in the brief and ensure references are identified in the order the request expects.
Runway’s API Input Parameters documents requirements such as HTTPS URL inputs, content headers, accepted codecs, size limits, and model-specific aspect-ratio constraints. SCX.ai documents its own format and size rules; its omni-reference list uses positional names such as “Image 1,” “Video 2,” and “Audio 1.” These examples illustrate why you should use the selected provider’s current instructions rather than copy a limit from another service.

4. Check rights, consent, provenance, and consistency
Technical acceptance does not establish permission to use an asset. Before submission, record where each reference came from, who created it, the applicable license and any territory or term restrictions, and who approved its use. Where a person’s likeness is involved, confirm that the required consent is in place.
Also check whether the references support the same brief. An image that establishes a character’s appearance, a clip that demonstrates motion, and audio that sets a mood may each have a distinct role. References that contradict one another can make the request ambiguous.

- Give each reference one primary purpose in the job.
- Remove assets that conflict with the approved brief or do not have a clear role.
- Start with the smallest set of references that can express the intended result.

5. Review the final request and what happens after submission
Before you submit, inspect the complete request or settings summary—not just the prompt box. Check required fields, mode-specific combinations, input ordering, destination, and output settings. If using an API, confirm how it acknowledges a job and how you retrieve its result.
For example, OpenRouter’s Submit a Video Generation Request documentation describes an acceptance response containing an ID, polling URL, and status, with usage information available later. It also documents error classes including 400, 401, 402, 404, 429, and 500. These are useful examples of the response and failure behavior to understand for a service you use; check that provider’s current billing and retry rules rather than assuming failed requests are free.
A valid request can still fail during processing, and an accepted generation can still produce an unwanted result. Preflight is about reducing preventable errors and understanding the job’s operational consequences, not predicting creative quality.
