A studio merger can change who controls a film library and makes future licensing decisions, but it does not tell you where any particular movie is streaming. Existing contracts, release windows, your country, and the date you check all matter. To find a film, look up the title in your region rather than relying on a studio or service name.
What changes when studios merge?
A merger can put a studio’s library under new corporate control. The new owner may decide how to license films, which services to invest in or bundle, and how to schedule releases. Those decisions can affect where movies appear over time—but ownership and availability are separate questions.

Existing licensing agreements do not automatically disappear when a deal is announced or completed. Warner Bros. Discovery’s Form 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2026 describes studio distribution through both company-owned and third-party television and streaming services, as well as physical and digital home entertainment. A change in ownership therefore does not, by itself, establish that every title will leave other services or move to the buyer’s platform.

A studio’s name on a film is not a reliable guide to its current streaming home.

Does a merger mean every movie moves to the buyer’s streaming service?
No. A merger does not automatically make a library exclusive to one service. The companies may continue licensing some films to outside platforms, and existing deals can remain in effect according to their terms.
In its February 27, 2026 announcement about the proposed Paramount-Warner Bros. Discovery combination, Paramount said the studios would continue licensing films and shows on both their own and third-party platforms. Paramount chairman and CEO David Ellison described the intention as supporting a “vibrant third-party ecosystem.” That is an announced company plan, not a promise about any specific title or a guarantee that the plan has been implemented.
Paramount estimated that the proposed combined company would have a library of more than 15,000 titles. That figure describes the company’s announced estimate of the combined library; it is not a count of films available on Paramount+ or any other single service.

What is the status of the Paramount-Warner Bros. Discovery deal?
As of October 4, 2026, Paramount Skydance’s proposed acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery was still pending. WBD’s Form 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2026 described a merger agreement subject to completion. On September 30, 2026, the companies announced an anticipated closing date, but an anticipated date is not confirmation that the transaction has closed.
That distinction matters: proposed platform changes and licensing strategies should be treated as plans until they are carried out. WBD’s June 9, 2025 announcement of a plan to separate its businesses, for example, described HBO Max and its film and television libraries as part of Streaming & Studios, while Discovery+ was associated with Global Networks. The announcement also said HBO Max was then in 77 markets—a dated corporate figure, not a measure of current availability. A planned corporate structure or past market count does not establish where a movie is streaming now.
How could the proposed merger affect theatrical and streaming release timing?
Paramount’s February 2026 announcement set out the following proposed approach for films released by the combined studios. These are company-announced plans, not universal industry rules or proof that every film will follow the same schedule.

| Release stage | Announced plan |
|---|---|
| Theatrical | Each film would receive a full theatrical release. |
| Paid video-on-demand | A minimum 45-day global theatrical window before paid video-on-demand. |
| Major theatrical successes | The company said it intended to use a 60–90-day theatrical window, or longer, for its most successful releases. |
| Home video and subscription streaming | A home-video window would follow the theatrical period before subscription streaming. |
| Geographic requirements | Geographic windowing commitments, including those in France, would continue to apply. |
The announcement does not specify a fixed subscription-streaming date for every film. A theatrical window is only one part of the timing; the applicable market, home-video window, and licensing arrangements also affect when and where a title becomes available.
How to check where a specific movie is available
Use a current, title-specific listing for the country where you plan to watch. Catalogs change, and results for one country or date may not apply elsewhere.
- Search the exact title. Check the film’s full title and, if needed, its release year to avoid confusing it with another movie.
- Set your country. Streaming and rental rights can differ by territory, so confirm that the listing covers your location.
- Check the type of access. Distinguish a title included with a subscription from one available only to rent or buy.
- Note when the listing was checked. If the service or lookup shows a license end date, use it; otherwise, do not assume availability will continue.
- Recheck before watching. A listing can become outdated as licensing changes.
The sources cited here do not provide a live catalog or establish availability for any named movie. A service should not be named as the place to watch a film without checking that title in the relevant country.

What does the U.S. competition review tell viewers?
The U.S. Department of Justice Antitrust Division said in 2026 that it had completed its review and concluded, based on the evidence it received, that the proposed transaction was not likely to harm competition in subscription video on demand, linear television, or studio development, production, and theatrical distribution. DOJ described an eight-month investigation in which it received more than two million documents from over 80 custodians.
That is DOJ’s stated assessment of competition in the specified markets. The investigation figures describe the department’s review; they do not measure how much choice a particular viewer has or where a particular movie is available. Nor does the review statement establish that the proposed acquisition has closed.
