The Galaxy S23 is the better fit if you want a compact flagship; the Galaxy S23 Ultra is for buyers who want a larger, sharper display, a dedicated 10× optical camera, an integrated S Pen and more storage options. Samsung’s published specifications show the same Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor family in both. The often-cited $400 price gap is between different base storage configurations at U.S. launch in 2023—not a current-price comparison.

How much bigger is the S23 Ultra?
The Ultra has a 6.8-inch display compared with 6.1 inches on the S23, and its body is larger in every listed dimension: 163.4 × 78.1 × 8.9 mm versus 146.3 × 70.9 × 7.6 mm. That extra size gives you more screen area, but makes the Ultra less suited to one-handed use and small pockets.
The Ultra’s screen is also higher resolution at 3088 × 1440; the S23 is 2340 × 1080. Both models are listed with refresh rates up to 120 Hz. The Ultra’s adaptive range starts at 1 Hz, while the S23’s starts at 48 Hz. Those are display specifications, not a guarantee of a particular difference in everyday battery life.
#1 Best Overall
- Galaxy S23 sports a 6.1-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X flat display with adaptive 48–120 Hz refresh rate, HDR10+, and a peak brightness high enough for strong outdoor visibility — giving you vibrant, crisp visuals and smooth motion while staying compact.
Does the S23 Ultra have a better camera?
The Ultra has the more versatile long-range camera hardware. Both phones offer 3× optical telephoto, but the Ultra adds a dedicated 10× optical telephoto lens and a 200 MP main camera; Samsung lists the S23 with a 50 MP main camera and up to 30× digital zoom. The Ultra is listed for up to 100× digital zoom.
These figures describe camera hardware and zoom ranges; megapixels and maximum digital zoom alone do not establish which phone produces better photos in every situation. Choose the Ultra if reaching distant subjects with optical zoom is important. The S23 still has a telephoto camera with 3× optical zoom.

Battery, performance and storage
Samsung lists typical battery capacities of 5,000 mAh for the Ultra and 3,900 mAh for the S23. Capacity is not a direct battery-life test, so those numbers do not establish how long either phone will last for your mix of screen time, network use and apps.

That shared processor designation does not prove identical performance in every task. The Ultra has the higher listed storage ceiling—up to 1 TB, paired with 12 GB RAM in Samsung’s listed configuration—while the S23 tops out at 256 GB with 8 GB RAM.

What does the S Pen add?
The S23 Ultra has an S Pen integrated into the phone; the standard S23 does not. That makes the Ultra the choice if you want a built-in stylus for handwriting, drawing or pen-based interaction without carrying a separate accessory. If you do not expect to use a pen, this distinction need not drive the purchase.
What was the S23 and S23 Ultra price difference?
Samsung’s U.S. MSRP list effective April 2023 priced the unlocked 128 GB Galaxy S23 at $799.99 and the unlocked 256 GB Galaxy S23 Ultra at $1,199.99—a $400 difference between those launch base configurations. Because the storage capacities differ, this is not a like-for-like same-storage premium. The same list showed the unlocked 256 GB S23 at $859.99 and 512 GB Ultra at $1,379.99. These are historical launch MSRPs, not current offers. See Samsung’s U.S. MSRP list effective April 2023.

- It offers a 6.6-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with adaptive 48-120 Hz refresh rate plus up to ~ 1750 nits peak brightness and “Vision Booster,” meaning the screen stays bright and viewable even in strong sunlight — great if you use your phone outdoors a lot.
Current prices depend on market and seller; compare the exact regional model, storage, carrier lock, device condition, battery health, seller and warranty before buying. A used or refurbished phone should not be compared with a new unlocked model as if the terms were equivalent.
Which Galaxy S23 should you choose?
- Choose the Galaxy S23 if a smaller body and easier handling matter more than maximum screen size, long-range zoom or built-in pen input.
- Choose the Galaxy S23 Ultra if you specifically want its larger, higher-resolution display, dedicated 10× optical telephoto, integrated S Pen or higher storage ceiling—and the price in your market makes those benefits worthwhile.
“Worth it” depends on the live price difference and which of those features you will actually use. Samsung’s 2023 launch MSRP does not tell you which model is the better deal today.
