How Stolen AI Credentials Enable Autonomous Scanning and Unexpected Cloud Costs

A stolen AI API key is not merely a leaked password. It is an active identity with whatever model, storage, compute, and administration rights the account grants. An attacker can run that identity from anywhere, call APIs repeatedly, use an automated agent to discover more systems, and launch billable resources. That combination explains how a key compromise can become both autonomous reconnaissance and a large cloud invoice.

What an attacker obtains when an AI credential is stolen

API keys, OAuth access tokens, session cookies, service-account keys, and cloud access keys are bearer credentials: possession is often enough to authenticate. If the credential is valid and its permissions are broad, the attacker does not need to break through your login screen or wait for a person to approve each action. Requests appear to come from your account, project, role, or workload.

The practical impact depends on the credential’s scope. A key limited to one model and a modest quota may permit unauthorized inference calls but not infrastructure changes. A service-account key or cloud access key with administrator permissions can enumerate virtual machines, storage buckets, networks, container clusters, quotas, and billing-related settings. An OAuth token or session cookie can expose the same web and API functions available to the legitimate user until it expires or is revoked.

  • Identity: logs identify your principal, project, or role, so the first activity may look legitimate.
  • Reach: permissions determine whether the attacker can call models, read data, create resources, alter policies, or create new credentials.
  • Duration: long-lived keys and refreshable sessions give an attacker time to return after an initial intrusion.
  • Automation: software can issue discovery and service requests continuously, at a speed no human operator could sustain manually.

This is why a leaked key should be treated as an account takeover event, not as a single suspicious request.

How autonomous scanning works after the key is accepted

“Autonomous scanning” in this context does not require a science-fiction system with unrestricted intelligence. It means an automated program or agent repeatedly performs discovery, chooses the next target, sends API calls, and retries when a request fails. Google Cloud has documented threat activity in which stolen credentials were used through cloud command-line tools to enumerate compute instances and related hosts, locate cryptocurrency infrastructure, and pivot toward theft.

1. Establish a working session

The attacker tests the key against the provider endpoint, determines which project or account it belongs to, and records the permissions returned by the API. Failed calls reveal missing scopes; successful calls reveal available services. Because these are ordinary authenticated requests, a basic login alert may never fire.

2. Enumerate the account and its neighbors

The automation lists regions, projects, instances, containers, storage, serverless functions, networks, quotas, and identity bindings. It can repeat the same calls across every region or account that the credential can reach. In the documented Google Cloud activity, enumeration of compute instances and related hosts helped the attackers find cryptocurrency infrastructure and identify paths for further theft.

3. Select profitable or strategically useful targets

An agent can rank targets by available GPU or CPU capacity, open management ports, valuable data, high quotas, or the ability to create additional credentials. It may prioritize a GPU-backed project for model abuse, a storage bucket containing secrets, or a host that can reach internal services.

4. Expand access and persist

If policy permits, the attacker creates a new access key, modifies an identity binding, deploys code, or steals a session token. New credentials make the intrusion resilient: revoking the first key will not remove a second key created minutes later. In an AWS intrusion described by the provider, attackers first used long-term IAM access keys and later used stolen session cookies to identify CloudFront and S3 resources and replace JavaScript with malicious code.

5. Execute high-volume actions

The loop then performs model calls, launches compute, copies data, scans other systems, or retries rejected requests. Rate limits and quota errors are treated as feedback. A single stolen identity can therefore generate thousands of API events before an owner notices an invoice or an alert.

Google Cloud’s H1 2026 threat report describes a supply-chain compromise in which threat actors used large-language-model assistance to automate credential harvesting and move from a developer’s local environment into cloud administration. The same report describes automated vulnerability scanning and says 21% of cases involved stolen human or non-human identities. Those findings illustrate why a credential compromise can progress quickly even when no individual attacker is manually operating every step.

Why the bill can jump from normal to extreme

Cloud charges accumulate through several independent meters. An attacker can abuse an AI model, provision ordinary compute, consume storage and network egress, or combine all of them. The invoice may therefore rise even if no single request looks extraordinary.

Unauthorized model usage

AI resource jacking, also called LLM-jacking, uses stolen cloud access to submit model requests or provision resources for someone else’s workloads. Sysdig’s Threat Research Team reported in 2024 that organizations were losing “$100,000+ per day to AI resource jacking” and described one victim charged “$30,000 in just three hours.” These figures are reported incidents, not a universal price, and the actual amount depends on model, token volume, region, quotas, and negotiated rates.

An automated agent can multiply cost by sending long prompts, requesting large outputs, invoking expensive models, or running parallel jobs. If a compromised key can call several projects, the attacker can distribute traffic to avoid a single-project limit. Retries caused by timeouts or quota responses may add more billable requests when the client is poorly controlled.

Compute and cryptocurrency mining

The same credentials can be used for ordinary compute abuse. AWS reported a campaign beginning November 2, 2025, in which compromised IAM credentials targeted EC2 and ECS and deployed cryptocurrency miners. Virtual machines, container tasks, GPUs, disks, snapshots, and outbound traffic each create charges. Miners are attractive because they can run continuously and scale across regions until quotas, detection, or account suspension stops them.

Resource creation that survives the original intrusion

An attacker may create an instance, container image, function, load balancer, public IP address, storage volume, or scheduled job. Even after the stolen key is revoked, those resources can continue operating under the provider’s normal billing identity. A second credential, startup script, or scheduled task can recreate them after cleanup unless the environment is checked for persistence.

Why billing alerts arrive late

Billing dashboards commonly aggregate usage by service and time interval. A bill can be accurate while still being too slow for containment. The Australian Cyber Security Centre recommends monitoring AI usage and credential changes and enforcing spending and rate limits; those controls are designed to stop or constrain abuse before a monthly statement is produced.

What the incident statistics do—and do not—show

Google Cloud reported that weak or absent credentials accounted for 47.1% of incidents in the first half of 2025, while leaked credentials represented 2.9% of initial access in that period. These percentages describe that report’s dataset and period; they are not a universal measurement of every cloud breach. The distinction matters because “weak or absent” controls and “leaked” credentials are different failure categories.

Google Cloud’s credential-protection work is aimed at exposed API keys, service-account keys, and OAuth client secrets. The company says reported leaked keys can be automatically disabled. Mandiant Consulting vice-president Jurgen Kutscher characterized the broader trend by saying, “Stolen credentials are now the second-highest initial infection vector, making up 16% of our investigations.” That figure likewise belongs to the investigations and period described by the source, not to all organizations.

Signals that distinguish credential abuse from a normal workload

Look for correlated signals rather than relying on one threshold. An attacker who is scanning and monetizing access usually leaves a sequence of identity, API, resource, and billing changes.

Signal What it can indicate Immediate check
Model calls from a new country, ASN, region, or command-line user agent Key or token use outside the normal application path Map the principal, source IP, model, project, and token volume
Sudden increases in input or output tokens Prompt automation, bulk extraction, or LLM-jacking Compare model, quota, and per-minute usage with the normal baseline
New access keys, OAuth clients, service accounts, or policy bindings Persistence or privilege expansion Identify the creator and revoke unapproved credentials and bindings
Instances, ECS tasks, GPU jobs, or containers created in unusual regions Compute abuse or mining Inspect startup scripts, images, commands, network destinations, and owner tags
Enumeration calls across many projects, regions, or hosts Automated reconnaissance Trace the first successful request and all principals it touched
CloudFront or S3 configuration and JavaScript changes Web-content tampering after AWS credential compromise Compare object versions, deployment history, and session-cookie activity
Quota, spend, or egress spikes without a matching release Unauthorized service use even when compute looks normal Break down charges by service, region, project, principal, and resource

Containment: the first response sequence

Move quickly, but preserve evidence before deleting everything. The objective is to stop new activity while retaining enough history to identify the compromised identity and any persistence.

  1. Freeze the financial blast radius. Apply tested spending and rate limits, reduce model quotas where safe, and pause nonessential projects or workloads. Do not assume a billing alert alone will stop requests.
  2. Revoke every exposed credential. Disable the AI API key, cloud access keys, OAuth tokens, refresh tokens, and active sessions associated with the affected user, workload, repository, build agent, or developer machine. Revoke related credentials created after the suspected compromise time.
  3. Replace with short-lived, least-privilege credentials. Issue new credentials only after removing the exposure. Separate model invocation from administration, restrict projects and regions, and grant only the actions each workload requires.
  4. Stop unauthorized resources. Quarantine or terminate unfamiliar instances, containers, GPU jobs, functions, scheduled tasks, storage, and network endpoints. Capture images, command lines, metadata, and startup scripts first when forensic review is required.
  5. Preserve logs and billing exports. Save provider audit logs, identity events, model-usage records, quota changes, resource-creation events, network-flow data, and detailed billing exports. Record timestamps in a common time zone and retain the original files.
  6. Inspect the source of exposure. Scan repositories, build artifacts, CI logs, developer machines, shell history, agent configuration files, issue trackers, and chat transcripts for keys, tokens, and copied secrets. Remove the secret from history, not only from the latest file.
  7. Notify the provider and investigate scope. Provide the earliest and latest suspicious timestamps, affected principals, projects, regions, resource IDs, and preserved logs. Ask for an abuse investigation and a billing review; reimbursement is not automatic.

Controls that reduce the next compromise

Defensive options differ in lifetime, scope, detection speed, enforcement, and coverage. A strong program uses several layers instead of selecting one product or alert.

Control choice Credential lifetime Scope Detection and enforcement Coverage
Long-lived administrator key Long-lived Broad Usually discovered through logs or billing; no inherent automatic stop One account or project unless reused elsewhere
Short-lived workload token Short-lived Can be least privilege Expiry limits replay time; alerts still required Specific workload and provider services
Provider secret-exposure detection Applies to exposed keys and secrets Finds API keys, service-account keys, and OAuth client secrets Can automatically disable reported leaked keys Repositories and other reported exposure locations; confirm provider coverage
Real-time audit and usage alerts Does not change lifetime Any monitored principal or service Faster than billing-only review; action may remain manual Configured cloud accounts, models, and logs
Hard spend and rate limits Does not change lifetime Project, model, or account quotas Constrains usage automatically when thresholds are reached Only services and quotas to which limits are applied

Require stronger authentication for control-plane actions

Require MFA for administrative and credential-management actions. Prevent users from registering a new factor unless an existing factor has authenticated the change. MFA does not repair a leaked server-side key by itself, but it can block an attacker from turning an initial foothold into new credentials, policy changes, or account recovery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate identities by function

Use one identity for model invocation, another for deployment, and a tightly controlled identity for administration. Deny credential creation and policy modification to routine inference workloads. Restrict production and development projects from sharing keys, and keep regions or accounts separate when operationally practical.

Make exposure monitoring continuous

Scan source repositories, build artifacts, CI logs, developer machines, and agent configuration files continuously. Alert on secrets when they are committed or pasted, rotate them immediately, and invalidate the old value. Google Cloud says its credential-protection work covers exposed API keys, service-account keys, and OAuth client secrets and can disable reported leaked keys automatically.

A practical monitoring and recovery checklist

  • Log key creation, deletion, use, policy changes, quota changes, model calls, and resource launches.
  • Attach alerts to unusual locations, principals, user agents, token volumes, and service combinations.
  • Export detailed billing data so charges can be grouped by project, region, model, resource, and principal.
  • Test a low-limit project and verify that a spend or rate threshold actually blocks further usage.
  • Review newly created credentials and compute daily during an incident, then at a cadence appropriate to risk.
  • After cleanup, rotate credentials again if a developer machine, CI runner, agent configuration, or repository history may still contain the secret.

The central lesson is operational: a credential gives an attacker an identity, while automation gives that identity speed and persistence. Short-lived least-privilege access, MFA around control-plane changes, continuous secret scanning, provider audit logs, and enforced spending and rate limits limit how far a stolen key can travel and how much it can cost before someone intervenes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a cloud provider automatically refund fraudulent AI charges?

Not necessarily. The documented evidence does not establish a universal refund rule. A provider’s decision can depend on its terms, account controls, notification timing, and the evidence preserved during the investigation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does revoking the exposed API key end the incident immediately?

Only if no other session, token, key, policy change, or resource was created. Investigators must check for secondary credentials and running resources that can continue billing independently.

Which logs are most useful for proving which credential caused the charge?

Retain identity and audit events, model-usage records, resource-creation metadata, quota and policy changes, network-flow data, and detailed billing exports with timestamps, principal names, regions, models, and resource IDs.

Is autonomous scanning limited to AI providers?

No. The same automated discovery loop can enumerate ordinary cloud infrastructure, storage, networks, and hosts. AI services add another high-cost target, but the underlying risk is stolen identity plus broad API permissions.
