A stock split or bonus issue increases the number of shares you hold without creating an immediate increase in your ownership value. The share count changes, the market price and/or accounting basis per share is adjusted, and your total portfolio value is mechanically unchanged at the adjustment. Your broker may therefore show a lower average price even though your total cost and economic interest have not changed.
The exact tax result depends on your country, account type, the event ratio and whether fractional shares were settled in cash. Use the arithmetic below to reconcile your account, then apply the rules of your jurisdiction.

The short answer
- Share count: multiply your old shares by the split ratio, or add the declared bonus entitlement.
- Average price: divide the same total cost basis across the new number of shares, with each tax lot recalculated separately.
- Portfolio value: unchanged at the mechanical adjustment. A later gain or loss comes from trading, company results and market conditions, not from the arithmetic of the split or bonus.
- Tax: not universal. United States, Canadian and Indian authorities publish different requirements for basis, holding period and reporting.
Investor.gov defines a stock split as “an increase in the number of shares of a corporation’s stock without a change in the shareholders’ equity.” Its two-for-one example turns 100 shares at $100 into 200 shares at $50. The ownership percentage is not diluted by that subdivision.
What a stock split changes
The ratio controls the arithmetic
For a split of a-for-b, calculate the new share count as old shares × a ÷ b. The immediate reference price is adjusted in the opposite direction: old price × b ÷ a. The company has divided each old share into a larger number of smaller-denomination shares; it has not added cash or assets to the business.

Two-for-one worked example
Suppose you own 100 shares trading at $100. Before the event, the position is worth $10,000 (100 × $100). A 2-for-1 split gives you 200 shares. At the adjustment, the reference price is $50, so the position remains $10,000 (200 × $50). If your original total cost was $6,000, your revised average basis is $30 per share ($6,000 ÷ 200).
The $10,000 figure is a mechanical illustration at the adjustment. Once the shares trade on the market, the price can rise or fall. A split itself does not promise a higher price, a higher return or a larger ownership percentage.
Why your average price falls
Total basis stays with the position
Your broker’s average-price field is a per-share number, not the value of your investment. For a regular split, keep the old total basis and divide it by the new share count. In the example above, $6,000 remains the total basis; only the display changes from $60 per share before the split to $30 per share after it.

The Internal Revenue Service states that “your overall basis doesn’t change as a result of a stock split, but your per share basis changes.” It instructs investors to allocate the old basis across the old and new shares rather than treating the extra shares as a new purchase.
Do not merge different tax lots casually
Each purchase lot can have a different cost and acquisition date. If one 100-share lot has a $1,000 basis and a second 100-share lot has a $1,200 basis, a 2-for-1 split creates two 200-share lots. The IRS examples allocate the first lot at $5 per share ($1,000 ÷ 200) and the second at $6 per share ($1,200 ÷ 200). Combining them into one undifferentiated average can produce the wrong gain, loss or holding-period result when you sell.
Use a lot-level worksheet
| Item | Lot 1 | Lot 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Shares before split | 100 | 100 |
| Total basis before split | $1,000 | $1,200 |
| Shares after 2-for-1 split | 200 | 200 |
| Basis per share after split | $5 | $6 |
Preserve the total basis, the adjusted share count and the original lot dates in your own records even when the broker’s statement appears correct. A later transfer between brokers can expose missing lot information.

What a bonus issue changes
Shares are allotted without a cash purchase
A bonus issue grants additional shares according to a declared ratio based on shares already held. India’s Accounting Standard (AS) 20 describes bonus issues and splits as increasing the number of shares without increasing the company’s resources. You do not pay the subscription price for the bonus shares described by that rule, but “no payment” does not mean “free profit”: the market adjusts to the new share structure and tax rules determine how basis and holding period are handled.

Assume 100 shares with a recorded total cost of $6,000. A 1:1 bonus adds 100 shares, leaving you with 200 shares. For an average-cost presentation, the same $6,000 spread over 200 shares is $30 per share. This is an accounting illustration; the applicable basis allocation and the market’s price adjustment depend on the event terms and local law.
A bonus ratio can be expressed as x shares for every y held. The entitlement is old shares × x ÷ y, and the post-allotment count is the old count plus that entitlement. Check the issuer’s notice for treatment of fractional entitlements and the exact allotment date.

India-specific holding-period rule
The Income Tax Department of India states that when shares or another security are allotted without payment on the basis of an existing holding, the holding period for those bonus shares is reckoned from the date of allotment. Indian investors should therefore retain the allotment statement and not assume that the parent shares’ acquisition date automatically applies. For Indian demat holdings, apply the published FIFO rule when identifying which securities are treated as sold.
Stock split versus bonus issue
| Point of comparison | Stock split | Bonus issue |
|---|---|---|
| Source of extra shares | Existing shares are subdivided into a larger number of units. | New shares are allotted according to a declared ratio based on existing holdings. |
| Cash paid by holder | None for the split shares. | None for the bonus shares described by the cited rule. |
| Share-count effect | Multiplied by the split ratio. | Increased by the declared bonus ratio. |
| Per-share price or average basis | Market reference price and per-share basis normally adjust inversely to the ratio. | Original cost is spread across more shares for an average-cost presentation; market adjustment depends on event terms and subsequent trading. |
| Ownership percentage | Unchanged in the cited split mechanics. | Unchanged in the cited no-consideration mechanics. |
| Tax handling | Jurisdiction-specific basis and reporting rules. | Jurisdiction-specific basis and holding-period rules; in India, the bonus holding period starts at allotment. |
Why total portfolio value does not rise automatically
The Canada Revenue Agency explains that a split does not affect total market value or your proportionate equity in the company. A 2-for-1 event doubles the units and approximately halves the quoted price at the adjustment, leaving the product of shares and price unchanged. The same economic principle applies to the no-consideration mechanics of a bonus issue: more units represent the same underlying ownership claim.

After the event, ordinary market forces take over. Earnings, dividends, interest rates, competition, investor demand and company announcements can move the price. If your position is worth more a week later, the increase is a market return, not money created by the split or bonus. Conversely, a falling price can reduce the position even though the share count is larger.

Tax treatment: identify your jurisdiction first
United States
For a conventional stock split, the IRS requires the unchanged total basis to be allocated over the post-split shares. Keep each lot’s basis and acquisition date. Brokers generally provide basis information for covered securities, but the IRS still expects investors to maintain records and verify that the reported lots match their own documents. A cash payment for a fractional share, a sale of part of a lot or a later disposition can create a separate reportable transaction; determine its treatment from current IRS guidance or a tax professional rather than assuming the split was taxable or tax-free in every circumstance.
Canada
CRA’s mechanical conclusion is that total market value and proportionate equity are unaffected at the split. Canadian investors should update the adjusted cost information used for their account and retain the issuer notice, broker statement and lot history. The treatment of bonus shares, fractional-share cash and registered versus non-registered accounts can differ, so use the current CRA rules for your specific account and transaction.
India
India’s AS 20 recognizes that splits and bonus issues increase shares without increasing resources. The Income Tax Department’s published rule starts the holding period of a bonus share on its allotment date. Keep the corporate-action advice, demat credit and original purchase records, and apply FIFO when determining which demat securities are regarded as sold. Do not import a United States or Canadian basis formula into an Indian return without checking the Indian rule for that event.

The same corporate action can be displayed similarly by brokers in different countries while producing different reporting obligations. Before filing, identify your country, account type, event ratio, allotment date, whether a fractional entitlement was paid in cash and whether the shares came from multiple lots. Those facts determine which authority’s rules apply.
How to recalculate your position step by step
- Save the notice. Download the issuer or exchange corporate-action notice and record the effective or allotment date.
- Write down the ratio. Record whether it was a split (for example, 2-for-1) or a bonus (for example, 1:1), including the old and new share classes if stated.
- Calculate the entitlement. For a split, use
old shares × split numerator ÷ split denominator. For a bonus, calculate the new entitlement and add it to the old count. - Reconcile the new count. Compare your calculation with the broker or demat statement. Investigate any difference before trading.
- Recalculate every lot. Divide each lot’s unchanged total basis by that lot’s new share count. Keep acquisition dates and lot identifiers intact.
- Check fractional shares. If the ratio creates a fraction, note whether the broker issued a fraction or paid cash in lieu. The cash treatment is jurisdiction-specific.
- Check the displayed price. A lower average price after a split is expected; compare total basis and total market value, not the per-share number alone.
- Store the evidence. Keep the notice, pre- and post-event statements, confirmations and your worksheet with your tax records.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Calling bonus shares profit: extra units do not guarantee extra value; the market adjusts and can move either way.
- Expecting a split to raise the price: a split changes denomination, not the company’s assets or your percentage ownership.
- Using one blended basis: recalculate each tax lot, especially when purchases occurred at different prices or dates.
- Assuming every country is tax-free: split and bonus reporting depends on local law, account type and later sales.
- Ignoring cash in lieu: a fractional entitlement paid in cash may be treated as a separate disposal under local rules.
- Relying only on the broker display: statements can omit transferred or older lots; retain your own records and reconcile them after the event.
- Using the wrong holding-period date: in India, the Income Tax Department specifies allotment for bonus shares, so do not automatically reuse the parent shares’ date.
A practical sanity check
Multiply your post-event share count by the adjusted market price to test the mechanical value. Then add the per-lot bases to verify that total basis is unchanged for the split calculation. If either check fails, review the ratio, the effective date, fractional-share treatment and any simultaneous corporate action before assuming the account is wrong.
