For most U.S. stocks and exchange-traded funds, a trade settles on T+1: one counted business day after the trade date. Saturdays, Sundays and full market or settlement-system holidays do not count, so a Friday trade followed by a Monday holiday normally settles Tuesday. That settlement date is when the official exchange of securities and cash occurs; it is not a guarantee that money can be withdrawn immediately.
Brokers generally credit sale proceeds when the trade settles, but federal law does not impose one universal deadline for sending those proceeds to your bank or delivering certificates. Your broker’s cash labels, transfer holds, margin rules and daily cutoffs determine practical availability.

What T+1 settlement means
Settlement is the final step of a securities transaction. The buyer receives the securities and the seller receives cash through the market’s clearing and settlement system. The Depository Trust and Clearing Corporation (DTCC) describes settlement as “a consolidated end-of-day process and the final step of a securities trade” that completes the transfer of ownership and cash.

Under the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) T+1 framework, the standard settlement cycle for most covered broker-dealer transactions became one business day after the trade date on May 28, 2024. “T” is the date the order executes; “+1” is the next eligible business day, not simply the next calendar date.

A broker may display a newly purchased position or sale proceeds before the official settlement event. Those screens are accounting entries or provisional balances. Legal delivery and the broker’s settled-cash calculation are tied to the settlement date.
How to calculate a settlement date around a holiday
- Identify the trade date. Use the date the order actually executed, not the date you entered it or submitted a bank transfer.
- Identify the security and market. Ordinary U.S. stocks and ETFs generally use T+1, while some funds, options, government securities and overseas markets follow their own conventions.
- Move to the next calendar day. This is the first date you test as a possible settlement day.
- Skip non-business days. Exclude Saturdays, Sundays and the relevant full closure days for the exchange or settlement system.
- The next counted business day is the normal settlement date. Confirm it against the broker’s trade-confirmation screen, because product and account rules can override the ordinary calculation.
- Check cash-availability rules separately. “Settled cash,” “available to trade” and “available to withdraw” can be different balances.
Friday before a Monday holiday
Suppose a covered U.S. stock sale executes on Friday and Monday is a full market holiday. Saturday and Sunday are not business days, and Monday is excluded, so Tuesday is the next counted business day. Tuesday is therefore the normal T+1 settlement date.
This is a calendar calculation applying the SEC rule to the NYSE holiday calendar. It is not a promise that every broker will release funds for withdrawal at the same hour, or that every product uses the same cycle.

The NYSE also identifies sessions that close early. An early close changes trading hours; it is not automatically an additional settlement holiday. An order executed on an early-close day still follows the applicable settlement calendar unless the exchange or settlement system separately lists that date as closed.
NYSE notes that when setting a record date, DTCC is closed and therefore is not counted as a settlement date. That distinction matters for corporate actions and record-date planning even when an exchange is open for trading.
When purchased shares appear in your account
After a buy order executes, a broker can show the position immediately or before settlement so you can monitor it. The official transfer of securities ownership, however, occurs on the settlement date. Until then, the position may be marked as unsettled, and the cash used for the purchase may also be categorized as unsettled.
What to check in the trade confirmation
- Trade date: when the order filled.
- Settlement date: the date the securities and cash are scheduled to exchange.
- Quantity and symbol: verify that the executed amount, rather than the requested amount, is shown.
- Account restrictions: margin, cash-account and good-faith-trading rules can affect whether you may sell or reuse the position before settlement.
A visible position is therefore not proof that settlement has completed. For tax reporting, corporate actions, transfer requests or a cash-account restriction, use the official settlement date on the confirmation.

When sale proceeds are credited and when you can withdraw them
The SEC says brokerage firms credit your account with sale proceeds as soon as the trade settles. For a standard T+1 sale, that normally means the settled-cash entry appears on the settlement date. The statement does not establish one nationwide clock time for every broker.
Federal law also does not set a single precise deadline for a broker to send funds or certificates to a customer after settlement. A broker may require an additional internal review, impose a transfer hold, or wait for the bank’s processing window. As a result, the amount shown as cash can differ from the amount you can actually withdraw.
Three balances that should not be confused
| Label | What it usually indicates | Why it may differ |
|---|---|---|
| Cash or account value | A displayed account balance, which can include unsettled transactions or other components. | It may not represent funds that have completed settlement. |
| Available to trade | Money the broker permits you to use for new orders under its cash or margin rules. | Broker risk controls can allow or restrict reuse before funds are withdrawable. |
| Available to withdraw | The amount the broker will currently release to a linked bank or other destination. | Transfer holds, bank-rail timing, identity checks and cutoffs can reduce it. |
Before scheduling a withdrawal, open the broker’s settlement or cash-availability detail for the specific transaction. Note the release date, the cutoff time for outgoing transfers and whether weekends or bank holidays add another day. A settled balance does not guarantee same-day arrival at your bank.

| Product or market | What can be said reliably | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Most U.S. exchange-listed stocks | Generally T+1 for covered broker-dealer transactions. | The broker’s confirmation and any special transaction condition. |
| U.S. ETFs | Generally follow the covered U.S. securities cycle when traded as exchange-listed shares. | Whether the transaction is an ordinary secondary-market trade and the broker’s cash rules. |
| Government securities and stock options | Investor.gov identifies these as settling on the next business day. | Contract, exercise, assignment and product-specific processing details. |
| Mutual funds | Processing can follow a fund or DTCC service schedule rather than the simple exchange-traded example. | The fund prospectus, transfer agent or broker’s transaction timetable. |
| Foreign-market securities | Settlement cycles and holiday calendars can differ from U.S. practice. | The foreign exchange, local central securities depository and broker’s international schedule. |
DTCC Mutual Fund Services’ 2026 schedule illustrates why fund transactions need their own calendar. It lists a Columbus Day trade date of Monday, October 12, with files and settlement on Tuesday, October 13. It also lists a Veterans Day trade date of Wednesday, November 11, with files and settlement on Thursday, November 12. Those entries describe DTCC Mutual Fund Services processing; they are not a universal timetable for every mutual fund or broker.

Counting calendar days instead of business days
Adding one day to a Friday trade produces Saturday, which is not a settlement day. Always count eligible business days, skipping the weekend and any full closure in between.
Treating an early close as a full holiday
An early-close session is still a trading day unless the relevant settlement calendar says otherwise. Check the exchange notice rather than automatically adding a day.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAssuming all holidays are shared by every system
An exchange, DTCC service and bank can publish different operating calendars. A U.S. exchange holiday does not answer an overseas-trade question, and a bank holiday can delay a withdrawal even after securities settlement.

Equating settlement with bank arrival
Settlement moves the proceeds into the brokerage account. A subsequent electronic transfer can have its own cutoff, review and transit time.
Relying on the portfolio screen alone
Use the confirmation’s settlement date and the broker’s “available to withdraw” figure. A position or cash number displayed before settlement may be provisional.
A practical planning checklist
- Record the exact execution date and time shown by the broker.
- Confirm whether the instrument is a covered U.S. stock or ETF, a mutual fund, an option, a government security or an overseas product.
- Consult the applicable 2026 exchange or settlement-system calendar, including full closures and any DTCC-specific closure.
- Calculate T+1 by skipping weekends and those full closure dates.
- Read the trade confirmation for the broker’s stated settlement date.
- On settlement day, distinguish settled cash from available-to-trade and available-to-withdraw balances.
- Check transfer cutoffs, holds and bank processing times before promising a payment or scheduling an external transfer.
- For record dates, fund orders or international trades, follow the product’s own documentation instead of the ordinary stock example.
What the rule means for timing decisions
If you need sale proceeds for a bill, plan from the latest plausible bank-arrival date rather than the execution date. A Friday sale before a Monday full closure normally settles Tuesday, but the broker may release an outgoing transfer later that day or on the next banking window. If the money must be available outside the brokerage by a fixed deadline, leave room for that second stage.

For purchases, a pre-settlement position display can help you track exposure, but it should not be used to infer that all ownership, cash-account or corporate-action rights have been finalized. The settlement date on the confirmation is the authoritative date for the transaction’s completion.
The U.S. move to T+1 shortened the ordinary cycle, but it did not make holidays disappear or standardize every broker’s user interface. The reliable method is to calculate the next eligible business day for the specific product, then verify the broker’s separate withdrawal policy.
