Yes. A $5 price does not change Steam’s refund rule. For games bought directly from Steam, Valve’s standard policy is to request the refund within 14 days of purchase and have less than two hours of recorded playtime. The rule covers a game that will not launch, fails your hardware checks, crashes, or simply is not enjoyable.
Submit the request through Steam Support as soon as possible. If Valve approves it, the full purchase price is returned to your Steam Wallet or, where supported, the original payment method, and Valve says approved refunds are issued within one week.

The standard Steam refund rule
Valve states that it will issue a refund for any Steam title requested within 14 days of purchase and played for less than two hours. Steam also describes refunds as available for nearly any purchase “for any reason,” including a buyer who discovers that a computer does not meet the game’s hardware requirements or who simply does not like the game.

These figures come from Valve’s Steam Support and refund-policy wording, whose policy page was last updated April 23, 2024. A request that misses one or both limits can still be submitted, but approval is discretionary rather than guaranteed.
How to request the refund
- Open Steam Support. Go to
help.steampowered.comand sign in to the account that made the purchase. - Open Purchases. Choose the purchase-history or purchases option, then select the $5 game.
- Identify the problem. Pick the closest reason, such as a technical problem, the game not launching, or not being enjoyable.
- Choose the refund option. Steam will show the available refund path for that transaction.
- Select where the money should go. Choose Steam Wallet or the original payment method when Steam offers that method for your transaction and region.
- Submit the form. Describe the facts briefly and accurately, including launch failures, crashes, incompatible hardware, or that you do not enjoy the game.
Do not wait for a developer response or spend hours trying fixes if you are still within the limits. Time spent with the game running increases the recorded playtime that Steam evaluates.

If the game will not run
A launch failure is a normal reason to request a refund, not a requirement to prove that the developer’s software is defective. Steam’s policy gives a computer that does not meet hardware requirements and a faulty game as examples of situations in which a refund may be appropriate.

- Name the symptom: the game does not open, closes immediately, freezes on a black screen, or crashes after a particular menu.
- State whether you tried launching it at all and give Steam’s recorded playtime context if it is under two hours.
- Describe a relevant compatibility issue, such as an operating-system version, graphics feature, or hardware requirement shown on the store page.
- Do not claim a test you did not perform. A short factual explanation is more useful than a long troubleshooting diary.
Refund eligibility is separate from technical diagnosis. Running a driver update, reinstalling the game, or using diagnostic software does not extend the 14-day period or pause Steam’s playtime counter. If you want to troubleshoot, preserve your eligibility first by submitting the refund request.
If you simply do not enjoy the game
You do not need a technical defect, negative review, or detailed justification to use the standard refund process. Valve’s policy says refunds can be requested for nearly any purchase and explicitly includes the case of a player who does not like a game.

Select the option that most closely matches your reason and write a plain statement such as “I played briefly and do not enjoy the game.” Keep the request truthful. Steam’s policy is intended to remove purchase risk, not to provide free games; repeatedly buying, playing extensively, and refunding can lead to requests being scrutinized.
What if you are over two hours or past 14 days?
Submit the request if you have a genuine explanation, but treat it as an appeal rather than an automatic entitlement. Steam Support can review circumstances outside the normal limits, yet Valve does not promise approval once the standard rule is missed.

More than two hours
Explain why the recorded time is high. For example, a game may have remained open while you were diagnosing a crash, or a technical fault may have required repeated launches. Give the actual sequence and avoid guessing at playtime. Steam’s system, not a manual estimate, is what the reviewer will see.
Older than 14 days
State the purchase date, when the problem appeared, and why you could not request the refund sooner. A request outside the window can be sent for review, but the normal two-hour rule does not restore an expired 14-day guarantee.
Both limits exceeded
You can still submit one clear request, but approval is least predictable. Do not create multiple duplicate tickets; provide the complete facts in the first submission.

Where the approved money goes and how long it takes
Valve says an approved refund is a full refund of the purchase and will be issued within one week. During the request, Steam may offer Steam Wallet credit or the original payment method. Wallet credit is generally the available destination when the original payment method cannot receive a reversal; the choices shown on your transaction are the ones that apply.
The one-week statement begins after approval, not when you first open the support form. Keep the approval message and check the same payment account or Steam Wallet balance you selected. If the stated period passes without the credit, contact Steam Support with the original ticket rather than opening unrelated requests.

Downloadable content (DLC)
DLC is generally refundable within 14 days when the base game has been played for less than two hours since the DLC purchase and the DLC has not been consumed, modified, or transferred. Some third-party DLC is marked nonrefundable before purchase; that notice controls the transaction. A DLC refund does not automatically mean the base game is refundable, so check each purchase separately.
In-game purchases
For Valve-developed games, eligible in-game purchases can be refunded within 48 hours when the item has not been consumed, modified, or transferred. Third-party developers may opt in to the same system, so availability depends on the game and the item. Once an item has been used, altered, or moved to another account, the normal in-game refund condition is not met.
Early Access and Advanced Access
The two-hour limit includes playtime in Early Access or Advanced Access. For a title that was not playable before its official release, the 14-day period starts at release rather than at the preorder date. Check the purchase and release dates shown in Steam when deciding whether the standard window applies.

Bundles
Bundles are generally refundable when no item has been transferred and the combined playtime is under two hours. A bundle can contain a nonrefundable item, which can prevent a full bundle refund. Review the individual components listed in the purchase before submitting.
Gifts
An unredeemed gift follows the standard 14-day and two-hour conditions. If the recipient has redeemed it, the recipient must initiate the refund under those conditions; the approved funds return to the original purchaser. The recipient cannot redirect the refund to a different payment account.
Purchases outside Steam
Third-party CD keys and Steam Wallet cards bought from another seller are not refundable by Valve through Steam Support. The seller’s own policy and deadlines apply, so keep the receipt and contact that retailer.
VAC bans
A Valve Anti-Cheat ban removes the right to refund that game. A refund request cannot be used to reverse the ban or recover the purchase price after the ban applies.
Video content
Steam says video content is generally nonrefundable unless it was bundled with other refundable content. Check the item’s classification before assuming the game rules apply.
EU and UK withdrawal rights are separate
Steam’s EU/UK guidance distinguishes statutory digital-content withdrawal rights from its voluntary refund policy. For digital content, the withdrawal period generally ends 14 days after purchase or when downloading begins, whichever is sooner. Starting the download can therefore affect a statutory withdrawal right even when the Steam refund policy is discussed separately.
If you are in the EU or UK and believe a statutory right applies to your transaction, use Steam’s regional withdrawal information and describe the relevant purchase and download dates. Do not assume that the EU/UK rule creates a longer or automatic refund period for every Steam game.
Examples using a $5 game
Example 1: It never launches
You bought the game three days ago, tried twice, and Steam shows 18 minutes. Select the technical-problem reason, describe the launch failure, and request the refund. This fits both standard limits.

Example 2: You played 90 minutes and dislike it
The game runs normally, but it is not enjoyable. At 90 minutes and five days after purchase, submit a normal refund request and state that you do not enjoy the game. A defect is not required.
Example 3: Troubleshooting pushed playtime to 2 hours 20 minutes
Submit anyway and explain the crash and the troubleshooting attempts that produced the extra recorded time. Steam may review it, but approval is discretionary because the two-hour limit was exceeded.
Example 4: A key bought from another store
Steam cannot refund the transaction because Valve did not process the sale. Contact the store that supplied the key and follow its refund terms.
