Steam Next Fest is a weeklong Steam promotion for unreleased games with playable demos. It runs three times a year—in February, June and October—giving players hands-on previews and developers a concentrated period for discovery and feedback.
A Next Fest demo does not automatically disappear when the event ends. The developer decides whether to keep it live, update it or deactivate it. Valve encourages developers to leave demos available beyond the event and to tell players in advance if they plan to remove access.

What Steam Next Fest is
Valve describes Steam Next Fest as “a weeklong event focused on promoting upcoming games with playable demos.” Its two-sided purpose is straightforward: players can try unreleased games, while developers can expose their projects to a large, event-focused audience and collect feedback before launch.

The event takes place three times each year:
- February
- June
- October
Each edition has its own registration and event dates. For the October 2026 edition, Steam scheduled the Fest from October 19 at 10:00 a.m. PDT (UTC−7) through October 26 at 10:00 a.m. PDT (UTC−7). The associated wrap-up page launches on October 26.

Next Fest is not a separate store or a special demo format. A participating game uses its normal, public Steam store page and an attached demo application. During the event, Steam gives those games additional discovery surfaces and organizes them using the information supplied by the developer.
Which games are eligible
Eligibility applies to the unreleased base game, not just to the demo file. Valve’s requirements include all of the following:
- The base game must not yet be released.
- It must be associated with a Steamworks developer account in good standing.
- Its public base-game store page must already be published.
- A publicly playable demo must be available by the time the Fest begins.
- The project cannot be a prologue, chapter or short-form version of a game that is already released on Steam.
- The title may participate in only one Steam Next Fest.
Valve does not state a requirement that the demo be exclusive to Steam Next Fest, newly created for the event or limited to a particular playtime. Those details remain part of the developer’s release strategy, provided the demo is publicly playable when the event starts.
The full game’s release must remain after the applicable Fest. A game that has already launched is not eligible for a future Next Fest simply because it adds a new demo.
How a developer enters a game
Registration starts from the unreleased base game in Steamworks. Developers do not register by opening the demo’s page first. The demo is an app attached to the base game, and Steam uses that relationship to present the demo alongside the upcoming title.
1. Publish the base-game page
The game needs a public store page before registration. That page is the public home for the project and the page that press and players will use during the event. A hidden or private page does not satisfy the stated requirement.

2. Create the demo-type app
From the base game in Steamworks, the developer creates a demo-type application. This gives the demo its own build and store configuration while keeping it connected to the unreleased game that is entering Next Fest.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →3. Submit the build and store assets
The developer uploads the playable build and supplies the demo’s store assets for review. The review is a basic readiness check rather than a complete quality-assurance process. Valve says it checks that the features promised by the developer work and that the build runs; it does not search for most bugs or certify that the demo is polished.
4. Release the approved demo before the Fest
The demo must be publicly playable when the event begins. A developer who wants press to play during Press Preview must release the demo before that preview starts, which also makes it available to everyone on Steam.
5. Continue development carefully
Valve allows developers to keep updating both the game and the demo after the build-review process. However, Steam does not review an updated build again. Any post-review change therefore becomes the developer’s responsibility to test, package and monitor.
What the build review does—and does not do
The review should be treated as a gate for basic functionality, not as a second development team. It is intended to verify that the submitted build launches and that the features represented in the submission are present and working. It is not a promise that the demo is free of crashes, progression blockers, performance problems or other bugs.
Recommended Free Tools
Because later updates are permitted without another review, developers should keep a known-good build archived, test every patch on the supported platforms and have a rollback plan. Players should also understand that a demo can change during or after Next Fest without receiving a new Steam review badge or separate approval.

How players find games during the event
Before the Fest, the developer chooses one or two primary categories for the base game. Steam combines those categories with the game’s Steam tags to organize discovery and place it in relevant event sections.
Discovery is deliberately different at different points in the week:
- Early in the Fest: Steam says discovery is randomized in most locations during the first few days, giving participating games an opportunity to be surfaced beyond the most obvious searches.
- Later in the Fest: Logged-in users receive carousels personalized from their behavior during the event. What a player watches, opens or plays can influence the games shown in those later recommendations.
Livestreaming is optional. A developer can stream a game as part of its promotion, but a livestream is not listed as an eligibility requirement and a game does not lose eligibility for not having one.

Press Preview is an early look for selected press outlets before the public-facing event period. It is not a private build or a separate press-only version of the demo.
Press sees the same public store page and the same publicly released demo that ordinary Steam users can access. Consequently, a developer cannot keep the demo unreleased and still offer it through Press Preview. If press can play it during the preview, the demo has already been released to everyone on Steam.
This arrangement means developers should treat the preview build as a public build: its content, stability and store presentation can be seen outside the press audience as soon as it is released.

What happens while Next Fest is running
Players browse event categories, open individual game pages and launch demos from those pages. Developers use the week to expose the current build, observe how players respond and gather feedback while the full game is still in development.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe event is time-limited, but the demo itself is an ordinary Steam demo application. Next Fest does not create a technical requirement that the demo shut down at the end of the week. The event’s end changes the promotional placement; it does not automatically revoke the demo’s availability.
Do Next Fest demos disappear after the event?
No. A demo remains available unless its developer chooses to deactivate it. Valve’s FAQ says that, although the release strategy is up to the developer, Valve encourages leaving a demo up beyond the conclusion of the Next Fest it joined. Valve also notes that many players have been disappointed when demos vanish immediately, so developers are encouraged to communicate before deactivation.
There are three practical post-event approaches:
| Approach | What players experience | When it fits | Main consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keep the demo live unchanged | The public demo remains playable after event placement ends. | The build still represents the game accurately and can support continued discovery. | Feedback and support requests continue after the event. |
| Keep it live and update it | Players retain access while the developer fixes issues or improves the preview. | Next Fest feedback identifies changes worth making before launch. | Updates are allowed, but Steam does not review them again. |
| Deactivate after communicating | The demo can no longer be launched once the developer removes it. | The build is obsolete, contains temporary content or no longer reflects the planned game. | Players should receive clear notice before access ends. |
Steam Next Fest itself performs none of these actions automatically. The developer controls the demo’s status, while the full game continues toward its separately scheduled release.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the post-event wrap-up shows
Shortly after each edition ends, Steam publishes a Wrap-up page featuring games with the most-played demos from that Fest. The wrap-up is a post-event discovery feature, not a requirement for continued demo access. A title can remain playable even if it is not included in the wrap-up, and appearing in the wrap-up does not force a developer to keep the demo live.

Choosing a demo-release strategy
There is no single release date that suits every game. A developer can evaluate the options using four practical questions: when the demo becomes playable, whether it stays live afterward, what kind of feedback is wanted and how much operational risk the team can absorb.
| Timing option | Availability requirement | Best suited to | Risk to manage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Early release before the event | The demo is public ahead of the Fest and remains available when the event starts. | Teams seeking early learning, bug reports and time to improve onboarding before the concentrated event week. | Players may encounter an earlier, less polished build; later changes must be tested carefully. |
| Press Preview release | The demo must already be publicly released for press to play it. | Teams that want early coverage while accepting that the same build is visible to all Steam users. | There is no private press-only safety net; public reaction begins as soon as the demo is released. |
| Event-focused launch | The demo is released before the Fest begins, with preparation concentrated around the event window. | Teams targeting near-launch awareness and a coordinated burst of attention. | Less time remains to discover and correct problems before peak visibility. |
These are strategic patterns rather than additional Valve eligibility categories. In every case, the demo must be publicly playable by the start of the Fest, and the game may use Next Fest only once.
What players should expect after the week ends
If the demo is still listed
Open the game’s public Steam store page and look for the demo’s launch option. If the developer keeps the demo live, the end of the event does not by itself prevent you from playing it. The game may receive updates, so the version you play after the Fest might differ from the event-week build.
If the demo is gone
If the launch option disappears, the developer has likely deactivated the demo. Next Fest does not provide a player-side way to restore access. Check the game’s store announcements or developer communication for the stated timing and reason.
If the demo changes
A post-event patch can alter content, fix problems or replace the event build. Since Steam does not re-review updates after the initial build review, treat the developer’s own patch notes and support channels as the authoritative explanation of changes.
One participation per title
Each title can participate in only one Steam Next Fest. Developers therefore need to select the edition that matches their production schedule, demo readiness and desired feedback window. Releasing a small early demo in one Fest does not create an entitlement to return with a larger demo in a later Fest.
The one-time rule also affects post-event planning. A team can continue updating the demo, leave it live, or remove it, but those actions do not reset eligibility for another Next Fest. The unreleased game proceeds toward its normal launch after the applicable event.
Quick Recap
A practical checklist
- Confirm the base game is unreleased and its public store page is published.
- Verify the Steamworks account is in good standing.
- Create the demo-type app from the base game, not as an unrelated standalone entry.
- Upload the build and required store assets for review.
- Test the exact build submitted for review, including the features promised on the store page.
- Release the demo before the Fest begins; release it even earlier if Press Preview access is desired.
- Choose one or two primary categories and maintain accurate Steam tags for discovery.
- Decide in advance whether the demo will stay live, receive updates or be deactivated after the Fest.
- If deactivation is planned, announce the timing clearly so players are not surprised.
- For every post-review update, run full internal testing because Steam will not review that update again.
