How Steam Cloud saves and local backups work for single-player games

Steam Cloud is synchronization, not a complete backup. For a game that has been configured for Cloud, Steam uploads the configured files—normally after you exit—and downloads them before that game starts on another computer. The developer decides which files, folders, operating systems and timing rules are included, so Cloud behavior differs from one single-player game to the next.

For reliable recovery, identify the game’s real save folder and keep dated copies somewhere independent before you repair a conflict, reinstall, or move to another PC or Steam Deck.

What Steam Cloud actually does

Valve describes Steam Cloud as storage hosted on Steam. Steamworks documentation says: “Steam Cloud automatically stores files from your game on Steam’s servers so your players can log into Steam and access their saved games from any computer.” Steam Support similarly explains that Cloud lets games and the Steam platform use cloud storage hosted by Steam.

That description does not mean Steam copies every file in a game’s installation. A developer must configure the game to use Steam Auto-Cloud or the Steam Cloud API, then specify the files, paths and platform rules. One game may synchronize a single save directory; another may include settings or profiles; a third may advertise Cloud support but exclude a particular type of save.

  • A Cloud badge on a game’s Steam store page is a useful first check, not a guarantee that every save is synchronized.
  • The game’s configuration determines which files are uploaded and downloaded.
  • Cloud synchronization can mirror a mistake or an unwanted overwrite; it does not automatically provide a browsable history of every previous save.

Cloud versus a backup

Synchronization tries to make the configured files match between locations. A backup is a separate copy that you can retain and restore later. If a damaged or unwanted local file is synchronized successfully, the damaged version can become the current Cloud version too. Keep an independent copy of the actual save folder before making repairs or accepting a conflict choice.

When files upload and download

For ordinary Steam Cloud integrations, Steam replicates changed files after the game exits. When you launch the game on another computer, Steam downloads the Cloud copy before the game starts. This sequence is why closing the game normally and waiting for Steam to finish synchronizing matters.

Dynamic synchronization

Some games use a supported dynamic-sync integration that can download changes during an active session. This is not universal. Unless the game’s documentation says otherwise, assume that the important upload point is a normal game exit and that another device receives the files before its next launch.

What happens after offline play

While Steam is offline, the computer can continue writing local saves, but it cannot upload them. When connectivity returns, Steam may detect that the local and Cloud copies changed independently. An interrupted sync, a crash while closing, or playing on two computers can produce the same result. Do not launch repeatedly while Steam reports that it cannot synchronize; each launch can create another set of changes and make the correct version harder to identify.

Where Steam Cloud and local saves are stored

Steam maintains Cloud-related userdata under an account folder and a game folder named with the game’s numeric Steam appID. Steam Support lists these default userdata roots:

Operating system Steam userdata root What it represents
Windows C:Program Files (x86)Steamuserdata Steam’s account and appID folders used for Cloud-related staging
macOS ~/Library/Application Support/Steam/userdata Steam’s account and appID folders used for Cloud-related staging
Linux ~/.local/share/Steam/userdata Steam’s account and appID folders used for Cloud-related staging

These paths are not a universal answer to “where is my save?” Developers can store the ordinary, readable save files in a user’s Documents folder, Windows AppData, a Saved Games directory, the game’s installation directory, or another location. The folder under userdata may contain Steam’s staging data rather than the file you would normally copy for a manual backup.

How to find the real save folder

  1. Check the game’s manual, support page or developer forum for a save-location entry. Use the game’s title and “save location” as search terms within the developer’s own support material.
  2. Look in the standard locations the game may use: Documents, AppData (Roaming or Local on Windows), Saved Games, the user Library on macOS, the home directory on Linux, and the game’s installation folder.
  3. Sort candidate folders by modification date, then make a small in-game save and exit normally. The folder containing a file whose timestamp changes is a strong candidate.
  4. Make a copy of the entire candidate save folder, including subfolders and configuration files, before editing or deleting anything.

Do not assume that two games from the same publisher use the same directory. Even different versions of one game can change their save format or location.

How to resolve a Steam Cloud conflict safely

A conflict means Steam found different local and Cloud versions of configured files. The dialog normally shows dates or timestamps for the local and Cloud choices. Those dates tell you when each copy was changed, not which one is automatically “correct”; compare them with the sessions in which you made the progress you want.

  1. Quit the game. Do not choose a conflict option while the game is still open or writing a save.
  2. Preserve the local copy. Locate the game’s actual save folder and copy it to an independent destination. Give the copy a date and a description such as “before Cloud conflict.” If you cannot identify the folder yet, preserve the likely folders rather than deleting or renaming them.
  3. Record the evidence. Note the local and Cloud timestamps shown by Steam, the last machine on which you played, and the last in-game milestone you remember. If the local folder contains several saves, inspect their filenames and modification times without opening them in a game that might rewrite them.
  4. Choose deliberately in Steam’s dialog. Select the local version if it contains the newest or desired progress; select the Cloud version if that is the copy from the session you want. Choosing one side tells Steam which set should become authoritative.
  5. Launch once and verify. Confirm the expected character, level, world state or chapter in the game. If the result is wrong, close the game without creating more saves and return to the preserved copy rather than repeatedly switching choices.
  6. Keep the manual copy. Retain it until you have played, exited and synchronized successfully on the machine you intend to use.

Steam warns that ignoring an inability-to-sync message and launching can create conflicts and lost progress. Steam Support also says it generally cannot recover lost saves or resolve a conflict for you, which is why preserving the local folder before selecting an option is the critical step.

Can Steam Cloud restore an older save?

Usually, not by itself. Steam Cloud is designed to keep configured files synchronized; it is not documented as a user-facing, versioned archive from which you can browse every earlier revision. If a newer save has already replaced the Cloud copy, Steam may have no older version available for selection.

Recovery options

  • Use the conflict dialog: if local and Cloud copies still differ, the older progress may be on one side. Compare timestamps and progress before choosing.
  • Use the game’s own rotating backups: some games keep files such as backup, autosave or numbered slots. Their names and retention rules are game-specific; copy the whole save directory before testing one.
  • Use your independent dated backup: this is the dependable route when both Steam copies contain the wrong state. Close the game, preserve the current folder, then copy the selected backup into the exact save location.

After restoring a local backup, start Steam with the intended files in place and only then accept or enable Cloud synchronization. If Steam offers a conflict, choose the restored local copy so it uploads instead of being replaced by the unwanted Cloud state. Keep the original current folder and the backup until the restored game has been verified.

Steam’s Backup Feature versus a real save backup

Steam’s built-in Backup and Restore Games feature is separate from Cloud synchronization. Its backup checklist includes \SAVE\ for single-player saved games, but the documentation limits the tool to games that fully download, install and patch through Steam. Valve also notes that backups it creates for Valve-made games may omit saved games and other custom data.

For a save you cannot replace, use a direct file copy instead:

  1. Exit the game and wait for Steam to finish any pending synchronization.
  2. Copy the complete save folder to an external drive or another independent storage location.
  3. Keep multiple dated copies rather than overwriting one backup. Label each with the game, platform and last played date.
  4. Periodically open a copy of the backup folder and verify that files are present and readable. Do not test restoration by editing your only copy.

An external hard drive for PC backups can serve as the independent destination, but it does not integrate with or improve Steam Cloud. Its value is that a separate copy remains available if synchronization, a disk failure or a mistaken deletion affects the live files.

Does Steam Cloud work between a PC and Steam Deck?

It can, but only when the game’s developer configured compatible Cloud roots or Cloud API synchronization for the relevant operating systems. Steam supports cross-platform Cloud integration; it does not automatically make every Windows save portable to Linux-based SteamOS or macOS.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why a game may not share saves across systems

Steamworks allows separate roots for each operating system. When a game uses separate roots, files are partitioned instead of shared, so a Windows save can remain invisible on Steam Deck even though both devices use the same Steam account. A game can also use a platform-specific save format or omit one operating system from its Cloud configuration.

Checks before switching devices

  • Look for the game’s Steam Cloud indicator and read the developer’s platform-specific documentation.
  • Exit the game on the first device and wait for synchronization before starting it on the second.
  • On Steam Deck, test with a noncritical save first. Keep a copy of the original PC save folder before experimenting.
  • If the game exposes separate Windows and Linux save directories, assume they will not merge unless the developer explicitly documents conversion or shared Cloud support.

A practical comparison: Cloud, Steam Backup and manual copies

Method Primary purpose Timing or coverage Main risk or limitation
Steam Cloud Synchronize developer-configured files between Steam installations Usually uploads after exit and downloads before launch; dynamic sync only for supported integrations Only configured files are included; an unwanted change can synchronize too
Steam Backup and Restore Games Reinstall or transfer supported Steam game installations Uses Steam’s backup process for games that fully download, install and patch through Steam Valve-created backups may omit saves and custom data
Manual dated copy Preserve a recoverable version of the actual save folder Created whenever you choose, before repairs or device changes Requires finding the correct folder and managing copies yourself

Troubleshooting checklist

The Cloud badge is missing

Treat the game as local-save only until its store page or developer documentation confirms Cloud support. Make a manual backup before moving to another computer.

The game starts with no saves

Confirm that Steam finished downloading Cloud data before launch, then check whether the game stores saves outside the Steam userdata root. If the game uses separate operating-system roots, the files may not be shared with your current platform.

Steam keeps showing “unable to sync”

Exit the game, preserve the local save folder, and resolve the displayed local-versus-Cloud choice before launching again. Repeated launches while synchronization is failing can create additional divergent files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A restored save disappears after restarting

Close the game, preserve the restored folder, and check whether Steam replaced it with the other side of a pending conflict. Put the desired files back in the exact save location, then choose the local restored version when Steam asks which copy to keep.

You cannot find any save files

Search the game’s documentation and support forum for its save path, then check Documents, AppData, Saved Games, the installation directory and platform-specific user folders. A Steam appID directory is a Cloud staging location, not proof that the game’s ordinary save is there.

Safe habits for single-player saves

  • Exit games normally and wait for the Cloud status to finish before changing devices.
  • Keep at least one independent, dated copy of irreplaceable saves.
  • Back up before reinstalling, changing operating systems, editing files or accepting a conflict choice.
  • Never assume a Cloud-enabled game synchronizes every save slot, mod profile or configuration file.
  • Verify a restored save in-game before deleting the preserved originals.
